I do think itâs usable, itâs not even a made up name but an Old Norse one, which, with [name_f]Astrid[/name_f], would give you a very Scandinavian theme but thatâs not bad.
I do personally prefer the Toh-reen pronunciation (it sounds even stronger but not as harsh to my ears) but Tho-rin is handosme, too.
Usable? Yep. Maybe not in the next ~6 months or so unless you donât mind being really, really tied to the Hobbit character, but it sounds like thatâs not an issue for you.
Middle namesâŠhmm. Iâd go with something classic but not dull. [name_m]Thorin[/name_m] [name_u]Elliott[/name_u], [name_m]Thorin[/name_m] [name_m]Louis[/name_m], [name_m]Thorin[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], maybe? (Totally stole from [name_f]Polly[/name_f]'s sig there. Sorry not sorry, sheâs got good taste .)
I can totally see [name_m]Thorin[/name_m] and [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] as siblings thanks to the shared Norse origins. [name_m]Thorin[/name_m] and [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] arenât quite as perfect of a fit together, but theyâre not jarring or bad or anything.
Usable yeah.
Tolkien didnât make it up, but itâs never been a âhuman nameâ, always a dwarf. He took it from the VöluspĂĄ in the Poetic [name_f]Edda[/name_f], which is an epic poem about the Norse creation myth / [name_m]Ragnar[/name_m]ök. Itâs taken directly from a list of dwarfsâ names. See verses 9-16 in this English translation(Tolkien fans will recognise a lot of names here).
I think itâs OK and definitely not unusable, and has a pretty good etymology, but I wouldnât name a kid after a dwarf myself. Especially not now they have made films of The Hobbit, so people will be more familiar with it as a dwarf name. I mean, it has literally no connotations other than dwarf (apart from with people who get confused and think it has something to do with [name_m]Thor[/name_m] perhaps?). Maybe if all the genetic input for the child was from tall people and you could be pretty sure he wouldnât be short.
I prefer the Irish name [name_m]Torin[/name_m], which has a similar phonetic feel but loses the dwarf baggage.
@geeknamezyo, thank you! Yeah, definitely wonât be used in the next six months - was thinking more along the lines of 5-ish years [name_m]Thorin[/name_m] [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] and [name_m]Thorin[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] are adorable, thanks! And youâre right, @opheliaflora has a fabulous taste
Though youâre right, [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] and [name_m]Thorin[/name_m] donât quite fit together right sigh. Aha, thanks so much.
@opheliaflora aha, thanks so much [name_f]Polly[/name_f]. Toh-reen is actually a really nice pronunciation â one I might actually consider.
@jackal I wasnt aware of that. I knew it was an old Norse name but didnât realise it was from a poem about dwarfs. But thank you for enlightening me! He would most definitely not be short, aha.
A scandinavian version ive heard is [name_m]Thoren[/name_m]⊠i think i prefer this spelling and pronunciation.
[name_m]Thorin[/name_m] [name_u]Gray[/name_u] just springs out at me i think it sounds amazing!
@parkerfamily I do like [name_m]Thoren[/name_m], thank you! And [name_m]Thorin[/name_m] [name_u]Grey[/name_u] is amazing! Thanks!
I love [name_m]Thorin[/name_m] (both the name and the film character) and I see no reason not to use it. There are far worse book/film characters to be named after, [name_m]Thorin[/name_m] is not that bad.
Absolutely love [name_m]Thorin[/name_m], itâs earthy and handsome with the slightest hint of Scandinavia. Iâm glad someoneâs written a post about it! Itâs by far my favourite name from the LOTR universe. As for usability, Iâd be a bit chicken myself (with the exception of a dog named [name_m]Thorin[/name_m]) but as they say: if you love it, go for it!
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f] is a close to perfect match for a sister what with, again, the Scandinavian feel. I also like that both have literary ties. Not too sure about [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], although itâs also a lovely name.
For middle names I like:
[name_m]Roscoe[/name_m], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_m]Louis[/name_m], [name_m]Raphael[/name_m], [name_m]Jack[/name_m], [name_m]Milo[/name_m], [name_m]Ignatius[/name_m], [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], [name_m]Wilder[/name_m], [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m], [name_m]Wolfe[/name_m], [name_m]Casimir[/name_m], [name_m]Frederik[/name_m], [name_m]John[/name_m], [name_m]Orlando[/name_m], [name_m]George[/name_m]
I just read in your other thread you have a cousin named Bilbo. That really made me grin. Thatâs so cool and so much better than the names I encounter far to often.
Definitely usable. It is a ârealâ name, and is easy to say and spell with familiar sounds. I think itâs fine and definitely suits a sister named [name_f]Astrid[/name_f]!
I do think itâs usable. though very Norse sounding
Iâve read the Hobbit and seen the movies, but even for me the first thought wasâŠ"[name_m]Thor[/name_m]?"
It goes great with [name_f]Astrid[/name_f], very thematic. But I love the name [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] and itâs not mismatched, especially in the US where [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] is more uncommon.
I would use a more common middle name and nothing too descriptive.
[name_m]Thorin[/name_m] [name_u]Gray[/name_u] does sound amazing, but it adds to the LOTRâs feelâimmediately made me think â[name_m]Thorin[/name_m] the [name_u]Grey[/name_u]â
Maybe something like [name_m]Thorin[/name_m] [name_m]Henry[/name_m] or [name_m]Thorin[/name_m] [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]
@minisia, thank you so much! While I think there are some absolutely wonderful names from the LOTR universe, like [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] and [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f], [name_m]Thorin[/name_m] is my favourite too. Iâm seriously considering dropping [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], even though itâs my favourite name, just because all the other names I like are either [name_m]German[/name_m] or have a strong Scandinavian feel. [name_m]Thorin[/name_m] [name_m]Frederik[/name_m], [name_m]Thorin[/name_m] [name_m]Orlando[/name_m] (though may be too much) and [name_m]Thorin[/name_m] [name_m]Casimir[/name_m] are delightful, thank you!
@noetje, I do have a cousin Bilbo! I personally quite like it as it reflects him and his parents perfectly, though he does get quite a lot of shit from the rest of the family, unfortunately.
@kala_way, thatâs awesome, thank you! I donât mind most people thinking of [name_m]Thor[/name_m] first, anyway, as thatâs a positive association to me as well. Now that youâve pointed it out, [name_m]Thorin[/name_m] [name_u]Gray[/name_u] does sound like that, aha. [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] also reminds me of Galadriel, which would be too much for me sorry, though it does sound great! [name_m]Thorin[/name_m] [name_m]Henry[/name_m] is really nice, thank you so much!
