My husband loves the name [name]Riley[/name] for our little girl (Due early Dec). I think it’s a great name, but I feel like it might be too common. It’s important to me to give her something that will be different. What are your thoughts?
The only other name we’ve agreed on is [name]Kennedy[/name]. I have a few others that I like, but he doesn’t ([name]Violet[/name], [name]Sammie[/name], and [name]Arizona[/name]).
[name]Riley[/name] for girls is becoming increasingly popular and trendy in the US. [name]Riley[/name] ranked at #39 in 2008 and if you add in the [name]Rylee[/name] (#116) and [name]Rylie[/name] (#313) spellings that would push the name up to #15.
In my opinion it looks set to be the new [name]Madison[/name] in the US.
I agree that it definitely seems to be getting more popular. Check to see how popular it is in your state, it may be a lot more or a lot less popular. [name]Do[/name] you like [name]Rhiannon[/name]? I think it’s similar to [name]Riley[/name] but it’s a lot less common.
I put together a list of other names that I thought you may like:
is this your first child? There are soooo many [name]Riley[/name] and [name]Kennedy[/name]'s of both sex and with crazy spellings. This name is super trendy and dated, in my opinion. I suggest you just keep going through names and see if anything else sticks. If you post some names that your hubby likes even if you hate them, we would give suggestions of similar names that YOU may like.
I really like [name]Arizona[/name]. Maybe you can swing it as a middle name?
I second the posts about [name]Riley[/name] being trendy and popular. [name]Kennedy[/name] is less popular, but I personally and unfortunately can’t get past the meaning (deformed head).

I know a lot of [name]Riley[/name]'s (various spellings) and [name]Kennedy[/name]'s (but a lot more [name]Riley[/name]'s). And its not only really popular now, its been really popular for several years now so its probably on its way to being dated. When my daughter was born 6 years ago, the girls were all [name]Riley[/name]'s and [name]Olivia[/name]'s. Then the [name]Isabella[/name]'s came along, and now its [name]Ava[/name] and [name]Ruby[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name] . . . at least where we are. Now this may not bother you, in which case you should pick the name you really love. I know lots of people that know the name they’ve chosen is in the top five, but choose it anyway . . . that’s up to you!
I personally prefer [name]Kennedy[/name] to [name]Riley[/name]. I know 4 children named [name]Riley[/name] under the age of 6. 2 boys and 2 girls. Its a bit confusing. I also know 5 dogs named [name]Riley[/name]. Seriously. When we adopted our second dog, he came with the name [name]Riley[/name], but we had to change it because there were, not kidding, 3 other dogs within a 3 house radius named [name]Riley[/name].
Thanks to all of you for the thoughtful reply posts and for giving suggestions on similar names! This is our first child. I do care how dated the name might end up being, but on the other hand if I hear “the” name then it probably would not matter. I want to share our lists so you can share thoughts. Big ringlet curls run in the family (including both of us) so we expect she’ll have it too (if it helps to picture the name).
Mine:
[name]Kennedy[/name]
[name]Reese[/name] - on the fence
[name]Paisley[/name]
[name]Drew[/name]
[name]Arizona[/name]
[name]Scarlett[/name]
[name]Harley[/name] - Everyone says it sounds trashy, but I think I can’t get past it.
[name]Arielle[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name]
[name]River[/name]

[name]Reagan[/name] - We have a close friend who named her daughter [name]Reagan[/name], should we not consider because of this?

[name]Kendall[/name]
[name]Lainey[/name]
I agree that [name]Riley[/name] seems very trendy and dated. And I keep thinking it is a dog’s name. I love some of the names on your list such as [name]Scarlett[/name] and [name]Eleanor[/name].
If you’re going for a name that won’t work its way to feeling “dated” I personally wouldn’t use:
[name]Kennedy[/name]
[name]Paisley[/name]
[name]Arizona[/name]
[name]Harley[/name] - Everyone says it sounds trashy, but I think I can’t get past it.
[name]Harper[/name]

I like the name [name]Riley[/name] and I think if you and your husband both agree on it, you will be happy with it, Im sure. My personal favorite name is [name]Lainey[/name] and I love [name]Scarlett[/name] too. Most of the names on your list sound great.
My husband and I are going through the same thing with [name]Riley[/name]. We’ve been toying with [name]Brylee[/name], but he’s worried that she may have to clarify all the time. Anyway, I love it and thought it might help!
I also know a dog named [name]Riley[/name]! If it’s the sound you’re after, I prefer [name]Kiley[/name], [name]Miley[/name], [name]Halley[/name] (spellings various). [name]Kennedy[/name] is a surname turned first name. Perhaps there are surnames in your own family tree that you could use as a 1st name for your daughter.
Clearly your husband loves unisex names, and you seem to like them as well. I think this is the best way to find a name you’ll both love.
[name]Reese[/name]
[name]Drew[/name] - I like both of these. Have you thought about [name]Dylan[/name]?
[name]Reagan[/name] - If you have a close friend who has used the name, I would cross it off the list.
[name]Kendall[/name]
[name]Lainey[/name] - while these two are not ‘really’ unisex, they have that masculine edge to them that I think could make them good compromise names, and I think both names are adorable.
What about [name]Landon[/name] (nn [name]Landi[/name])?
i like [name]Riley[/name]… it’s not a favorite of mine or anything…
i was looking at the list of names that you guys both like… and you picked [name]Darcy[/name] and your husband picked [name]Ryann[/name] which are the two mns i picked for my twin girls due in january… so off your list, i’d have to say those are my favorites…
but if you like [name]Riley[/name]… then you should use it, even if it is going to be popular… if you like it, then that’s what counts
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Riley[/name]! I really don’t care how many people think it’s a dog’s name or too common (popularity doesn’t bug me at all). I love unisex names too. My favourites (that I prefer for girls):
[name]Ethan[/name] (I know this is a boy’s name, I just love it on a girl)
[name]Dylan[/name]
[name]Riley[/name]
[name]Harper[/name]
[name]Rowan[/name]
[name]Arden[/name]
[name]Skyler[/name]
[name]Elliot[/name]
[name]Ryann[/name]
If you love [name]Riley[/name], I’d say go with it. It means ‘courageous’ too so I think it’s a name with everything going for it.
I’m aftraid I agree with other posters about [name]Riley[/name] being to trendy and unisex. I love [name]Eleanor[/name] and [name]Scarlett[/name] though! Would your husband like [name]Rowan[/name] or [name]Robyn[/name] or maybe something that could have a masculine nn
