It’s very unusual I know, but has sort of grown on me recently! Problem is I have generally heard it pronounced Cah-lie-oh-pee. However, upon further research, I have found some online Greek language resources which pronounce it as Cah-lee-oh-pee. Now personally I like both pronunciations but it is really confusing to me as to which one is correct! Does anyone have any knowledge of the Greek language who could comment on this? Or how would you pronounce it, and what do you think of it?

I love the name [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], but I honestly don’t know how to pronounce it either. I pronounce it Cah-lie-oh-pee, although I did think it was [name_u]Cal[/name_u]-ee-oap for the longest time, aha:D.

As far as I can tell, ca-lee-OH-pee is correct in Greek while ca-LIE-oh-pee is the traditional English pronunciation. Often the English pronunciation of Greek names is quite different from the original. For example in Greek [name_f]Irene[/name_f] is pronounced ee-[name_f]REE[/name_f]-nee, not eye-reen. Both are valid pronunciations so it just depends on your preference.
Greek here! We pronounce it Cah-lee-OH-pee (Καλλιόπη).
I love this name and it is a top contender for us (K spelling though). I prefer the first pronunciation you listed, but have had similar thoughts to you regarding wanting to pronounce it correctly. I’ve done research, but found that some Greek people say it the first way, and some say it the other!! Helpful, I know. facepalm My deduction from that is: just use the pronunciation you like best / works best for where you live. Assuming you don’t live in Greece, it’s not like you’re not going to have people correcting you all the time. And even if people try to correct you, there’s evidence that both pronunciations are acceptable.

[name_f]Calliope[/name_f] is beautiful. I always assumed it was [name_u]Cal[/name_u]-lie-oh-pee, but either way is pretty? I think that it’s uncommon enough anyway, that it doesn’t matter as much.

I believe the correct pronunciation is Cah-lee-oh-pee. That’s the pronounciation I personally prefer, but both are nice and usable.

I really like [name_f]Calliope[/name_f]! I’ve been saying Cuh-lie-oh-pee (and the one time I heard it, it was said the same way), but I’d be inclined to think Cuh-lee-oh-pee is correct. But I think the former pronunciation is pretty acceptable as an Anglicised version, and isn’t too big a stretch to be completely disregarding the original one.

I had always thought it was [name_u]Cal[/name_u]-ee-oh-pee for such a long time, found out it was [name_u]Cal[/name_u]-eye-oh-pee and finally started to love that pronunciation, and now this thread has just totally confused me!
^This.^ Both are therefore acceptable, but unless the bearer was Greek, I would find the Greek pronunciation to be a bit pretentious in an English-speaking country. This is one of my all-time favorite names, and I think the English pronunciation is perfectly lovely.
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f] is a beautiful name! With names like this, when there is more than one proper/acceptable pronunciation, I think that both pronunciations are fine. I’d just go with my favorite and/or the one that makes the most sense for my location.
