[name]Joan[/name] is the oddball of all my beloved names but I can’t help adoring it! She’s [name]Joan[/name] of [name]Arc[/name] AND [name]Joan[/name] [name]Jett[/name] - she’s just simply “[name]Jo[/name]” some days too. She’s little but fierce, vintage, simple, well-known yet off the top 1000. The only [name]Joan[/name] I’ve ever met was a teenaged girl so I don’t view the name as too old at all.
But do the cons out-weight all that [name]Joan[/name]'s got going for it?
[name]Joan[/name] means “God is gracious” which not appealing for a non-[name]Christian[/name] like myself (the meaning doesn’t matter as much but it does slightly concern me).
[name]Joann[/name] is a relative’s name and I am firmly against family names. Too close? Not that this imaginary possible future child would know [name]Joann[/name] very well probably but my parents will think of [name]Joann[/name] first.
Also, middle names? Maybe it’s the shortness, maybe it’s that darn “n” ending but I’m coming up blank. I feel [name]Joan[/name] needs something longer, softer and sweeter to balance it but I loathe frilly names. I can’t seem to find something that works.
What are your thoughts on [name]Joan[/name]? A filler middle name only? Too old? Too dull?
My Grandmother’s name is [name]Joan[/name]. She always felt it was so plain in comparison to her sisters names. I personally don’t mind it. I just like the similar [name]Jane[/name]…a whole lot better.
Oh, don’t worry about the meaning. I don’t see myself as a religious person and I have no problems with the meaning of my name - I might be if it meant something bad like the names [name]Claudia[/name] or [name]Leah[/name].
I think [name]Joan[/name] is ok. I know only 50-60 year old [name]Joan[/name]'s. I wouldn’t worry about [name]Joann[/name]. Completely different name. I also prefer [name]Jane[/name]. Here are some middle name options:
[name]Joan[/name] is rocker girl cool ([name]Jett[/name]), crazy & saintly (D’arc), literary ([name]Didion[/name]), strong & iconic & a little campy ([name]Crawford[/name]) and hilarious ([name]Rivers[/name]). I don’t think I can come up with a namesake that isn’t pretty awesome! The name is vintage in a sweet & wholesome 50s way, but it’s also tough imo. Not wallflower vintage. I love it so much. It sound awful in my husband’s Russian accent though, so it’s off the table for me!
I think people hesitate about [name]Joan[/name] cause it’s in that awkward stage where most of them are in their 50s. The ladies named [name]Linda[/name], [name]Patricia[/name], [name]Theresa[/name], [name]Debora[/name], [name]Susan[/name], [name]Jean[/name], ect. They sound like mom names to all of us ladies named [name]Jennifer[/name] & [name]Jessica[/name] who are having babies now! A lot of people probably won’t have an open mind about [name]Joan[/name], but I think it’s amazing!
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Joan[/name]. Like you, it’s a name that just keeps nagging at me to use it… I think [name]Joan[/name] is spunkier and funner than the classy [name]Jane[/name]. The nn [name]Joanie[/name] is ADORABLE! I think meeting a little girl named [name]Joan[/name] would be oh-so-refreshing.
As [name]Joan[/name] and [name]Joann[/name] are completely different names; I wouldn’t worry about using it. While you might not have significant ties to God, the meaning is not negative - so I wouldn’t worry about that either. [name]Joan[/name] is a fabulous choice!
I love [name]Joanna[/name] and [name]Johanna[/name], [name]Joan[/name] is so plain compared to them. And it resemble moan and groan… not a name I’d object to anyone else using, but it just doesn’t do it for me!
Honestly, I think it’s awful. Plain and unpleasant. Like [name]Phyllis[/name] or [name]Gertrude[/name], I think it deserves to never make a comeback. Sorry.
[name]Joan[/name] has grown on me in recent years, and the Mad Men character is another positive influence. With its 1930s peak, it’s in that zone where it isn’t quite ready under the “100-year rule” but has probably passed its most unfashionable point this go-round.
I forgot about Mad Men! Another great [name]Joan[/name] for the list
Yes, [name]Joan[/name] does have unfortunate rhymes though. Yet, it still would go great with my ideal sibset. BUT…I’m so concerned about the family issue. [name]Joan[/name] and [name]Joann[/name] are just way too close for me to okay with. I think this will be one I won’t ever be brave enough to use
