Thoughts on Abijah

Hello everyone, I’ve been thinking about the name [name_u]Abijah[/name_u] a lot recently and would love to know your general thoughts on it. It’s a unisex name, used in the bible on both men and women. It is pronounced like [name_m]Ab[/name_m] (like [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]) and rhymes with [name_m]Elijah[/name_m], so [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-by-juh. The name itself seems to be a bit obscure as I can’t find many comments about the name anywhere.

I knew a girl with this name in my childhood but she pronounced it as [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-bee-juh which I have come to learn isn’t the proper pronunciation but I have to admit I am quite fond of it being pronounced like that. I personally don’t like using improper pronunciations so I would probably just stick to [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-by-juh.

What kind of middle name would you use with [name_u]Abijah[/name_u]? What other names would you consider as a sibling for [name_u]Abijah[/name_u]? I think [name_f]Sabina[/name_f] would make a nice sis-set with [name_u]Abijah[/name_u]. Also does this name seem overtly religious to you?

It reminds me of Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria, which seems like a bit of a weird association for a name. Not a bad one so much as just really random. I think hardly anyone would know that though, I think I’ve taken the Sporcle capital quizzes too many times

Apart from that, my first thought was that it was pronounced ah-bih-jah, the i like in “it”. I could see there being pronunciations in general since it looks like it could be that or ah-bee-jah. It also seems a bit masculine since many of the -ah ending Biblical names are male ([name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_m]Josiah[/name_m], etc.). It does look quite Biblical because of that ending. I’m personally not the biggest fan, but I think it’d be perfectly usable as long as you don’t mind explaining the pronunciation/spelling.

I’m not a fan either because of the biblical and masculine-looking ending as a previous poster mentioned, and I would imagine this being pronounce ah-bee-juh personally, so I agree there would be a lot of pronunciation issues. I just find it clunky looking and sounding and not feminine. On the other hand, I love [name_f]Sabina[/name_f]…
