Thoughts on Aderyn?

I came across this name the other day, and at first I didn’t think much. But lately its certainly grown on me! I think of it as a mix between [name]Adison[/name] and [name]Katheryn[/name]. However, its a Welsh name, meaning “a bird”. I think it could make a really pretty girls name! I love [name]Addie[/name] as a nick name, though I very much dislike [name]Addison[/name]. [name]Adelaide[/name] is lovely, but I just don’t love it as much as Aderyn.

What do you ladies think? Does Aderyn sound like a nice girls name? Would you maybe spell it different? Adaryn, Aderin, Adarin, Aderynn, etc? I’d love to hear any input!

I’m not a fan, personally. It sounds very similar to “adderall” to me; not necessarily the association I’d want for my baby.

I’m sorry, but I agree with the adderall connection. When I saw Aderyn, I thought adderall (even though I don’t even know anyone who takes it). [name]How[/name] about [name]Adeline[/name], Adalind, Adelise, or [name]Adelyn[/name] instead? All give you the [name]Addie[/name] nickname and are less common than [name]Addison[/name]. GL!

I really like it. It’s one of my top 2 choices right now. I think it’s very unusual but still easy to spell and pronounce, has a nice nature connection and a pretty sound without being hyper-feminine. I’d tend to leave the spelling alone as I think it’s pretty intuitive, and I don’t generally like messing with spellings unless there’s a very good reason to do so.

I like it, and I would stick with the Aderyn spelling. I’m a sucker for Welsh names.

I think the “adderall” association would depend on where you live. I’m in the UK and had to google what it was because I’d never heard of it. It’s only on sale in the US and [name]Canada[/name].

Hmm, can’t edit my post for some reason…

There’s really only a similarity to Adderall if you’re pronouncing Aderyn like [name]AH[/name]-der-en, which as far as I understand is not correct. I was under the impression that the pronunciation is [name]Ah[/name]-DARE-en with the emphasis on the middle syllable, so in my mind they really they don’t sound much alike at all.

Not a fan at all it sounds very masculine

Sorry, not a fan either.

This, although I’ve always pron. it [name]Ah[/name]-DEER-in.

Not sure how you’re pronouncing it, but the way I wanted to say it initially made me think of Adderall, or a mispronunciation of [name]Adeline[/name]/[name]Adelyn[/name] - hate it, honestly, sorry.

If it’s “ah-DARE-in” as someone up there said, I like it better - I’d prefer [name]Adair[/name] though.

I thought of Adderall too!

I think of [name]Ayden[/name], and Adderall.

It’s a huge no for me.

Seriously dislike. When I tested the name on DH he immediately said, Adderall. The child would have a lot of trouble contending with misspellings, mispronunciations and repeating the name for people for the rest of her life, I can see it now. I like what a pp suggested, how about [name]Adair[/name], which sounds pretty and feminine instead of like a pharmaceutical drug.

I rather like the name and its variations.

I am with lucystone, it sounds like a medication. Sorry. I would stick with [name]Catherine[/name] or [name]Adelaide[/name] or [name]Adeline[/name].

This has been an interesting thread to read. [name]One[/name] of the reasons Aderyn appeals to me is that I find the pronunciation very intuitive so it has been a surprise to see it consistently and overwhelmingly pronounced incorrectly by what I would consider a more name educated than average crowd. I think I’m going to test it on some non name obsessed friends and see how they naturally pronounce it as it definitely loses it’s appeal without the emphasis on the middle syllable.

Not a fan, it sounds like Adderall or some other medication.

It sounds like Scooby Doo trying to say “[name]Adelyn[/name]”, or like a drug. Sorry!

I am from the U.S. and I am not seeing the adderall connection, maybe because I am pronouncing it (a-DARE-in). I think it is a lovely name. I am a sucker for foreign nature names.

This just looks like a smoosh of names together, definitely not an option imo.
