What are everyone’s thoughts on Afie for a girl? This originally was on our boy list. The lead singer of the band Bahamas is named Afie. He’s Canadian (like myself and my family) and when we first heard it, we loved it.
People I share with either immediately love or hate. The feedback I’ve received in using it as a boys name is that it resembles [name_u]Alfie[/name_u], or [name_m]Adolph[/name_m]. However we are toying with using it for a girl.
I love [name_f]Effie[/name_f] and Ophie so much, however my husband strongly dislikes both…. But on the other hand, he loves Afie lol.
I don’t think there’s any other way we could spell it to avoid the [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] look alike. To confirm, pronunciation is Ay-Fee.
Afie is interesting - contemporary, musical, and kind of arty!
Admittedly, however, I would have guessed the pronunciation Aff-ee (like [name_m]Raffy[/name_m] or Cathy), but maybe others might be more familiar with the singer?
Aefie came to mind maybe, but Afie looks a bit tidier and gives that arty/music feel vs Aefie which feels more mystical and fairy-like?
He introduces himself in interviews as Ay-Fee (pronunciation), although your suggested spelling would seem to make more sense in terms of how to say it!
I do agree Afie looks a bit tidier and more appealing that way.
It’s a fun name! I love FF sounds so this one has always stayed on our list
I certainly don’t mind Afie. It’s unexpected and fun.
Two problems immediately come to mind for me though.
I misread the name as [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] for most of the first time I read/skimmed over your post. So yes, I do see that being a common problem when people see Afie written.
I also would’ve pronounced the name aff ee if you hadn’t clarified the pronunciation. Again, only a problem upon people seeing/reading the name.
I’m not immediately sure about this name, but I would like it me a cool gal called Afie and I like that it has some cultural meaning - who doesn’t want to be named after a member of a band?! I mean, there’s the more established [name_f]Aoife[/name_f] (ee-fa) but Afie could be better?!
Thank you, this was going to be my first question! These are my very first impressions:
It’s very sweet but I must admit the word aphid popped into my head.
I love how unusual it is.
I think Afie would usually have to spell their name and answer questions like, “What’s it short for?” a lot.
Like @EloiseT it made me think of [name_f]Aoife[/name_f].
I’m really intrigued to know where the name originates and what it means! It seems like Afie Jurvanen might have Finnish ethnicity, but I can’t find anything about the meaning of the name anywhere. (Afi might be an Old Norse form of ‘grandfather’, but I don’t know if I was reading a reliable source or if it has anything to do with Afie!)
