Thoughts on Amalia vs. Amélie?

What does everyone think of [name_f]Amalia[/name_f]? I’ve seen it here and there lately, and it’s really growing on me! I’m not so much a fan of [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] (I do love [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], though), but [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] is really intriguing me lately.

What would you imagine an [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] to be like? I’m liking the idea of either [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_u]Grey[/name_u] or maybe using [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] as a MN instead, although I’m not sure what FN I would use for it at this point. I sort of like [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] or [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] or [name_f]Grace[/name_f] [name_f]Amalia[/name_f]. [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Amalia[/name_f]?

[name_m]How[/name_m] does it compare to Amélie? I’ve been seriously thinking of bumping Amélie up to a FN on my list–it was my best friend’s name, and a variation of my great-grandmother’s MN ([name_f]Amelia[/name_f]), and the more I think about it, the more I love it.

Thanks, Berries!

I like [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] more than [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] or [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]. I just prefer [name_f]Amalija[/name_f] spelling, which is Croatian.

I like [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] a lot. It’s sophisticated and a bit more unique than [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. I prefer [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] over [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] since the pronunciation of the latter isn’t that intuitive to me.

[name_f]Amalia[/name_f] is my number one name… I just never got to use it because it doesn’t depend just on me
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] is a sweetheart for me because of the film with [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] Tautou which has been my favorite romance since it came out. I once met an adorable little girl with this name, her father was [name_m]French[/name_m] and mother was South African… she wore it very well and for a long time the name stayed on my mind. That was four years ago.

Back to [name_f]Amalia[/name_f], I think it’s a beautiful, simple name that still has a sort of strength in it. Strong feminine without being over the top… the perfect balance in a name. That’s my opinion.

My favorite [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] combo’s are: [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] [name_f]Maria[/name_f], [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] [name_f]Leonor[/name_f], [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] [name_f]Isadora[/name_f], [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] [name_f]Isis[/name_f], [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] [name_u]Vida[/name_u]… Since it’s a name that sounds fundamentally Latin to me, I usually have the urge to pair it up with more Latin names… But it’s a matter of taste.

Have you thought of [name_f]Amalie[/name_f] as a cross between [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] and [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]. I think it’s very pretty and I recently heard of an European royal with this name… don’t know who because I don’t follow these things much.

I adore [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], I think that will remain my favorite out of [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] would be next out of the four. [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] is a newer name to me. I think it could easily grow to adoration but would remain behind [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. Although I adore [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Emme[/name_f], [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] I am just not too fond of [name_f]Emelie[/name_f]. I love the look, a much livelier, spunkier [name_f]Emily[/name_f] but sounding almost the same. I love it with your other favorites and that it is special to you. [name_m]Just[/name_m] not a name I would use. I adore [name_f]Grace[/name_f] [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] and loving [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Amalia[/name_f].

Out of the two, I prefer [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] .

I picture [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] to be a European young woman. She has pale skin with dark hair and eyes. She is very sophisticated and studying literature in university. I like [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] but it is not my favorite. I prefer [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]/[name_f]Emilia[/name_f], and [name_f]Amelie[/name_f].
[name_f]Amalia[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_u]Grey[/name_u] is pretty.

I personally prefer [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] as a first.

My favourite variation is always Amélie. [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] is one of the most overused names where I live. [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] is less common, but I still heard quite a lot. I love [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] from your list though. I prefer [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] as a middle but Amélie as a first name.

I love [name_f]Amalia[/name_f]. It was always my name in Spanish class. I didn’t realize this was the [name_m]German[/name_m] variation, as I always associate it with Spanish. So I immediately thought I’d pick [name_m]French[/name_m] for you. But [name_m]German[/name_m] works too. I think [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] flows a bit smoother than Amélie, but that might just be my accent. Amélie looks prettier to me. My favorite of all the potential combos would be [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] Amélie.

I really do like [name_f]Amalia[/name_f], it was a favourite for a while - but [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] is so popular you might have a hard time getting people to spell/say it correctly. [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] are just gorgeous! Something about [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] together is especially just lovely.

With Amélie, you might have a few more issues. The accent is a pain in English speaking countries, but without it the assumed English pn is ah-mel-ee… At least all the Amelies I know say it that way. I personally prefer that one as the ah-[name_f]MAY[/name_f]-lee sounds a bit harsh and exagurated - since the authentic [name_m]French[/name_m] pn is softer and somewhere between the two sounds. I know it means an awful lot to you though, and it is beautiful - I think its best left for the middle spot.

I adore [name_f]Amalia[/name_f], especially because I love sweet nicknames. (She could be called [name_f]Mali[/name_f] or [name_f]Lia[/name_f]!)

I’ve never known any pronunciation issues with the few that I’ve known, although to my knowledge, this name is more common in Australia.

I think Amélie is gorgeous in written form. however, like others have said, I’m never sure which pronunciation to use.
It’s funny that you like [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_u]Grey[/name_u]; [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] was always my favourite combo until I settled on [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f]

[name_f]Olivia[/name_f], urgh, you’re so right. I hate how most English speakers seem to think the accent automatically means it’s pronounced with the [name_f]MAY[/name_f] sound. :frowning: I thought it would likely be a problem, but I figured if I loved Amélie, I’d deal with all the mispronunciations.

I, too, really love [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Amalia[/name_f]! I had been decided on [name_f]Violet[/name_f] Amélie [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] for a while now, but if I moved Amélie up to a FN, I could do something like [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f] or [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] [name_u]Grey[/name_u]? [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]?

@emsky - I don’t know–I’d always heard the [name_m]German[/name_m] aspect of it. I like that to honor my [name_m]German[/name_m] ancestry.

@c@29 - I’m thinking the same–[name_f]Amalia[/name_f] as a MN, and Amélie as a FN. I’ve done the same for [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]. But I really love [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_u]Grey[/name_u], too, so I’m not quite decided yet. :frowning:
