Thoughts on Amelie?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone, I’m new here. Been looking around the internet for opinions on names and found this forum. Had a little look around and it seemed like a lovely place to ask for opinions on our name choice. We’re having a little girl next year and we are thinking about [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]. We have a not-too-common surname, Somar, pronounced like [name_f]Summer[/name_f] so it can sound like a middle name and can destroy some others too. I had [name_f]Anya[/name_f] on my list, married into this surname and suddenly it doesn’t work anymore. We’re thinking about [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], pronounced similar to [name_f]Emily[/name_f] (I’m aware there are many pronunciations so I thought I should clear this up). Many nickname ideas too which I’m excited about as I love nicknames for cute names. Not thinking about a middle, but not against it. Would love to hear your opinions on it. Thank you!

Amelie is an adorable name for a girl and I’m sure you won’t regret using it. You could call her [name_f]Emmie[/name_f], [name_u]Lee[/name_u], or [name_f]Leah[/name_f] as a cute nickname.
For middle names you could go with something common like [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_u]Anne[/name_u] or [name_u]Louise[/name_u] or you could go with something a little more unique like [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], [name_u]Francis[/name_u] or [name_f]Astrid[/name_f].
Anyways, whatever you choose for her will be adorable. You can’t go wrong with [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]

I usually prefer the more straightforward sounding [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] (or even [name_f]Earhart[/name_f]!), but [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] [name_f]Summer[/name_f] is gorgeous!

I’m not sure how [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] could be pronounced like [name_f]Emily[/name_f] though. I’m only aware of one pronunciation of [name_f]Amelie[/name_f].

Welcome to Nameberry!

Amelie is a lovely name. I love it!

Welcome!

I have a little sister named Amélie who absolutely fits and loves her name. We call her LiLi (lee lee) sometimes but like you say, there are so many sweet nicknames

My Amélie was named after the 2001 [name_u]French[/name_u] film, Le Fabuleux [name_m]Destin[/name_m] d’Amélie Poulain, or just ‘Amélie’ in [name_f]English[/name_f]. I would definitely recommend you check it out if you haven’t already!

Seconding @magalie’s film recommendation! It’s adorable and definitely helped [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]’s popularity here in the UK.

I really like [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]. It’s pretty and sweet but feels chic and sophisticated too. I think it feels far fresher than [name_f]Emily[/name_f], although a potential downside is that it could be misheard as the more popular [name_f]Emily[/name_f]. It does sound great with your surname.

Congratulations and good luck! :four_leaf_clover:
