What is your opinion on Armani? I am from Sicilian and southern Italian descent so I’ve been looking for some Italian names to add to my list. I love the sound of this name but know it may be associated with the fashion brand. Also does it sound more like a boy’s name or a girl’s name to you when you hear it?
Thanks in advance
P.S. I’ve also thought about Avani but I have a sister named Avalyn and that seems too similar. Alani was also considered but my husband wants to name his next female service dog that in honor of Alan Watts.
I think it sounds nice, and it’s pretty unisex to me. I wouldn’t assume boy or girl without seeing the person. That said, I don’t personally like the connection to the luxury brand. For me it was instant, and it makes the name feel a bit tacky, even though the name obviously didn’t originate from the brand.
I agree that Avani is too close to your sister’s name, but I really like Alani a lot. For a similar sound to Armani, maybe Ariadne, Amari, Araceli or just Ari?
I definitely thought of the brand first. Also feel it might get a bit confusing if there’s an Armani, Avalyn and Alani in the same family, even if one is a dog
I like [name_u]Armani[/name_u]! The only time I’ve seen it it was on a guy. I think it could be unisex but leans a bit more masculine, not a bad thing for me though. I think of the brand but at the same time it’s not completely associated with it and still feels like a name to me vs just a brand
I do like [name_u]Armani[/name_u] - it has a pleasing sound and look - kind of stylish and unisex. I would associate it with the fashion brand though. I did know an [name_u]Amani[/name_u] (similar pronunciation, but different origin) and she did get questions about the brand.
[name_u]Alma[/name_u], [name_f]Amadea[/name_f], [name_u]Amore[/name_u], [name_f]Demi[/name_f] and [name_f]Aura[/name_f] came to mind
Is it used as actual given name in [name_f]Italy[/name_f]? I know it’s a surname obviously (Giorgio Armani) but I thought Italians generally don’t use surnames as given names. That’s more of an American/Anglo cultural thing.
I’m afraid I don’t care for it. The luxury brand connotations are too strong, and I can see people being judgemental about it.
It’s definitely most often seen as a surname with occasionally seeing it as a first name. I was looking for names of Italian origin that were more unique both in the U.S. and in [name_f]Italy[/name_f]. But I think I will keep looking because it seems like [name_u]Armani[/name_u] has too much association with the brand! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!!
I have to agree with the others - the brand association is so strong that I wouldn’t use it unless you wanted to go for a brand name specifically. [name_f]Armida[/name_f] could be a nice alternative!
Tacky because of the brand. There are so many beautiful Italian names though, I’m sure you’ll find something that appeals to your tastes. Perhaps try googling unusual / uncommon / unique / modern Italian names?
