Thoughts on August?

What are your thoughts on this name?
Does this sound like a strong boy name?
To me - [name]Augustus[/name], [name]Augustin[/name] or [name]Augustine[/name] sound more masculine but I really need a 2 syllable first name as our surname is a heavy, long, 3 syllable name.

I love [name]August[/name]! I think it’s very strong and handsome. It was my top pick for a boy until I started saying it out loud with my surname (the “S” sound mimics my surname in a bad way - like [name]August[/name] [name]Douglas[/name] for example :frowning: )

I would use it!

[name]Love[/name] [name]August[/name]. It’s one of my favorite names for a boy.

I absolutely love [name]August[/name]. It was my great-grandfather’s name and have loved it since I was a kid. Unfortunately, I found out a few years ago that he wasn’t exactly a “father of the year” type so it didn’t seem right to use it. I like the nn [name]Gus[/name] as well for it.

I think it’s a great name. Too bad we couldn’t use it! I say go for it!

I don’t like [name]August[/name] or nn of [name]Gus[/name] and especially [name]Augustus[/name].

[name]Love[/name] it! [name]Will[/name] probably be our top choice for #2 if we have a boy.

[name]Love[/name] it. I should love it since I used it for our son. He usually goes by [name]Augie[/name]. I got a lot of mixed reactions to the name before [name]Augie[/name] was born. I heard several " but that is a girl’s name" or " that’s a weird name". The nay-sayers have really warmed up to the name and really can’t see him as anything but [name]August[/name]/[name]Augie[/name].

I love love love [name]August[/name]!

Wow! A lot of [name]August[/name] fans. My only concern is that baby girls will start being named [name]August[/name] more frequently and he will hate it. [name]Even[/name] though, I believe from what I have read that this name has been a strong male name for ages.
I would go with [name]Augustus[/name] and call him [name]August[/name] but like I said our last name is long.

Does [name]Augustus[/name] [name]Willem[/name] Hennessey sound like too much of a mouthful?

[name]August[/name] is at No#482 in the US for a boy and I think it will rise quickly. Although the name isn’t even in the top 1,000 for girls, I know of one celebrity who did name a girl [name]August[/name] and that is country singer [name]Garth[/name] [name]Brooks[/name]. If the current trend of male names being “stolen” by girls continues unabated, I believe it will increase in usuage for females. I prefer [name]Augustus[/name] myself but I know some people who think it’s a bit much. I’m not one of them. By the way, [name]Augustus[/name] is at #795. Here’s the dilemma: [name]Augustus[/name] [name]Willem[/name] Hennessey or [name]August[/name] [name]Willem[/name] Hennessey? I like [name]August[/name] better with your surname but I love the look and flow of [name]Augustus[/name] [name]Willem[/name] much more. Since you’re thinking of naming him [name]Augustus[/name] with the nn of [name]August[/name], maybe you should wait until you meet the little guy before deciding. He might look strong and masculine ([name]Augustus[/name]) or he might be more calm and laidback ([name]August[/name]). I wasn’t very helpful, was I? All the best in your name quest!

[name]Love[/name] it! I see it as very masculine. [name]Even[/name] if it rises a bit in popularity for girls as well as for boys, it’s not like giving your son a name that’s super popular for girls (like [name]Madison[/name], for example.) [name]Augustus[/name] is nice but a bit much for me, and I actually don’t see it as any more masculine than [name]August[/name].

Your son will be called much more often by his first name-last name than by his fn-mn, so I would put more weight on the flow of that combination. I think [name]August[/name] Hennessey sounds better than [name]Augustus[/name] Hennessey. [name]August[/name] [name]Willem[/name] Hennessey is fantastic. There’s something about it that just sounds ‘right’ to me. Good luck

thanks so much for the feedback everyone, esp the name stats mischa. I am leaning towards going for [name]August[/name] because of the fact that it goes better with our surname but could still use more opinions if anyone is willing. thanks

I love [name]August[/name]. It was a top contender for my now 2 year old, and it’s on the list if we ever have another boy. My issue with it is that I do think it’s a good name for a girl too (though I wouldn’t use it for a girl). When ever I’ve mentioned it to anyone they say “but that’s a girl’s name”. I don’t know why people think that, but in my experience, they do. Anyway, I much prefer [name]August[/name] to [name]Augustus[/name], though I actually think both sound good with your last name.

I [name]LOVE[/name] this name - it’s on our short list. Nice pic!

I love [name]August[/name]! I don’t see anything feminine about this and if people name their girls this it would be like naming their daughter [name]David[/name] or [name]Franklyn[/name].
I love the nicknames [name]Augie[/name] and [name]Gus[/name].
I like [name]Augustus[/name] as well but then I used [name]Tiberius[/name] so I like dramatic names!

[name]Love[/name] it, and that’s why we named our youngest child [name]Oliver[/name] [name]August[/name].
