Thoughts on Augustine

I thought we had a different baby boy name locked up ([name_m]Timothy[/name_m] [name_m]David[/name_m]), but lately my husband has really been stuck on [name_m]Augustine[/name_m]. It has grown on me, but I wonder if its too much. I like that it is unusual but not “out there.” He is a huge fan of St. [name_m]Augustine[/name_m], we were married in St. [name_m]Augustine[/name_m]'s church, etc. so it has a lot of special meaning for us. It just sounds so…long for a little boy. I think we could pull it of with the nn [name_u]Gus[/name_u]? Thoughts?

Middle name would be [name_m]John[/name_m] after his dad. So [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m]. Last name 3-syllable, [name_m]German[/name_m] sounding, starts with B.

Yes and yes :)!

Who could resist a boy named [name_u]Gus[/name_u].

Might I suggest [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] [name_m]Jack[/name_m] as a variant of [name_m]John[/name_m]?

I would choose a variant of [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] like [name_m]Austin[/name_m] or [name_u]August[/name_u].
To me, [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] is a bit much for a child and too overly tied to the [name_m]Saint[/name_m]. (just for me though).
However, if your husband really loves the name and you plan on calling him [name_u]Gus[/name_u] most of the time anyway, then [name_u]Gus[/name_u] seems like a fine and cool nickname.

I think it’s very dapper. [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] is quite a heavy name though, perhaps a variation of [name_m]John[/name_m] to lighten it up a little? [name_m]Ioan[/name_m], [name_m]Johan[/name_m], [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] or Seán, perhaps?

I prefer [name_m]Augustin[/name_m], and you might consider perusing St. [name_m]Augustine[/name_m]'s writings. I’m not a fan, but still makes for an interesting name choice–go for it! (if you can get past the misogyny, etc.)

I think [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] is lovely. I don’t think it is too over the top, especially with the nn [name_u]Gus[/name_u]. I personally prefer [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], but [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] or any of the Au-/[name_u]August[/name_u]- masculine names are lovely. [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] doesn’t flow perfectly, but I think it works. [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] flows better, but [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] is so much more exciting so I would go with [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m]. I prefer [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] to [name_m]Timothy[/name_m] any day. [name_u]Gus[/name_u] is such a better nn than [name_m]Tim[/name_m]/[name_m]Timmy[/name_m].

We are pretty set on using [name_m]John[/name_m] as that is both grandfather’s names – and I also prefer in the other order ([name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Augustine[/name_m]) but then the initials spell JAB and that’s not good!

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

I love [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] and I’m glad you’re spelling it this way. It’s strong, regal and quite distinctive. You have to remember that babies aren’t small for very long. Since we spend most of our lives as adults, I always advise parents to give their child a name that can be borne at all stages of life. You can use [name_u]Gus[/name_u] when he’s little, [name_u]August[/name_u] in school and he can choose what he wants to be called when he reaches maturity. [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] is versatile that way! There was a British painter named [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] so that’s who I think about when I heard your combo. I love [name_m]Timothy[/name_m] too and [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] and [name_m]Timothy[/name_m] (nn [name_m]Timo[/name_m] or “tee-mo”) would make awesome brothers if you decide you use both in the future.
