Thoughts on Avon?

When I was younger I read a children’s book that featured a male character named [name_m]Avon[/name_m] and I immediately fell in love with the name. However, upon telling a close friend about my love for the name she said that she automatically thought about the makeup brand [name_m]Avon[/name_m], which I can see the natural progression towards.

Is [name_m]Avon[/name_m] useable for a boy, even in this day and age, despite its connotations to a makeup company? What are some middle names that come to mind? (Most likely would be mother’s maiden name, Imfeld, as the middle, but still wondering)

I love it and find it absolutely usable! A friend of mine named his son [name_m]Avon[/name_m], after the river. I wish there were more boy names like this!!

I feel like I’m a European country this would be much more well received than the states. People here can be…judgmental. I love that Europe seems to be more flexible about names.

Personally, I like [name_m]Avon[/name_m] but yes the association with the makeup company is very strong.

It sounds strong to me, I like it! That may be because of [name_m]Avon[/name_m], Outer [name_m]Banks[/name_m], a place that I love. I don’t really think of the make-up, but I know some people do. I would love to see it used as a strong boys name, though.

All I can think of is the makeup company. I want to like it, but I’m not sure it works in the US.

I don’t use or care about makeup, but I thought of the company right away.
It wouldn’t be my style anyway, since it reminds me of the incredibly popular [name_f]Ava[/name_f], but I do think it’s usable.

I don’t think it’s useable

I want to like [name_m]Avon[/name_m], but it instantly reminds me of the makeup brand.

I didn’t think of the makeup company at all…probably because the next town over here is [name_m]Avon[/name_m], pronounced Aa-von, not Ay-von. I don’t know how you were thinking of pronouncing the name, but you might run into issues w/the two different pronunciations. For me it also have a more feminine vibe, possibly because of its similarity to Avonlea in the [name_f]Anne[/name_f] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables books.

I automatically think of the makeup, unfortunately. I don’t think its completely unusable though, and I wish it didnt have that association because it is a handsome name.

If you dont mind that a lot of people will probably think of the makeup company, then I think you could definitely use it.

I didn’t immediately think of the makeup brand, and anyhow, I think once a name is given to a kid, then that kid will forever be the dominant association for that name among anyone who knows them.

It reminds me too much the makeup company :frowning:

I’ve always pronounced it Ay-von but now I’m enjoying the pronunciation Aa-von too!
