Thoughts on baby girl named Cedar? Other suggestions!

Hi Berries,

50 days to go until our little baby is born & still haven’t set on a name yet.
Gosh this naming business is hard work.

Little girl to join big sister Willow Harper.
We are not afraid of unusual & unique names, however still look at those nasty negatives like; any chance of being teased, possible nicknames that we don’t like, will it look good on a business card in 20 years, etc etc.

I particularly like nature names, but am up for any possible names suggestion that aren’t too common.

Our short list so far is:
Winter - baby will be born in Spring!
Arcadia - Nn Cady not a favourite of mine
Indigo - Don’t particular like the India association plus it’s a bit hippy
Cedar - Is this too masculine of a name for a little girl, especially when sister Willow is such a feminine name?

Do you have any thoughts you’d like to share on these names, maybe things I haven’t thought about, your favourite or any other suggestions! This mummy needs some help, thanks in advance.

It’s not too masculine (I don’t think things like trees etc can be masculine or feminine), I just prefer other tree names, such as [name_f]Maple[/name_f], [name_f]Acacia[/name_f] and [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] (Cornish word for [name_u]Elm[/name_u]).

Of your favourites I find [name_u]Winter[/name_u] a bit too close to [name_f]Willow[/name_f], so my favourite is [name_u]Indigo[/name_u].

[name_f]Willow[/name_f] [name_u]Harper[/name_u] is really sweet! [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] does feel more masculine to me; I can’t really see it on a girl, but something along the lines of [name_f]Eliana[/name_f] [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] might work. Have you considered it as a MN? I love [name_u]Winter[/name_u] a lot, and [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] is really cute. My issue is that [name_f]Willow[/name_f] and [name_u]Winter[/name_u] are sort of matchy, at least to me, more than the fact that a [name_u]Winter[/name_u] would be born in [name_f]Spring[/name_f]. I had a friend who knew a [name_u]Winter[/name_u] who was born in autumn, so I don’t think that really matters. As far as time names go, there seems to be 4 camps–those who think it’s fine to use them anytime, those who think it’s cheesy to use them anytime, those who think it’s cheesy to use the name during the time period that the name reflects (for example, a [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] born on [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] day), and those who think it’s lame to use the name during a time period that’s not reflexive of the name (for example, an [name_u]August[/name_u] born in [name_u]March[/name_u]). Since all of these groups have their own opinions, it seems to sort of even out to me, so I don’t really think it matters too much, haha! Either way, people might get frustrated, or annoyed, but it’s not really their opinion that matters. So if you love [name_u]Winter[/name_u], I would use [name_u]Winter[/name_u]! I think [name_u]Winter[/name_u] nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] is quite perfect. [name_u]Indigo[/name_u] isn’t really my thing, but I do like the sound of [name_f]Indira[/name_f]. I love the color purple, though–have you thought of [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] or [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] as names?

As for [name_f]Arcadia[/name_f], I like it, if only for the reason that it reminds me of [name_u]Joan[/name_u] of [name_m]Arc[/name_m] (although I don’t know why?)–she was a great lady with a great story. Maybe it’s just the “arc” part, haha. If you don’t like [name_f]Cady[/name_f], I’m sure you could find another nn to replace it, so they hopefully wouldn’t call her [name_f]Cady[/name_f]? I think [name_f]Arcadia[/name_f] [name_u]Winter[/name_u] or [name_f]Arcadia[/name_f] [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] would be lovely next to [name_f]Willow[/name_f] [name_u]Harper[/name_u]! I can think of [name_u]Ari[/name_u] or [name_f]Dia[/name_f] right now, or maybe even [name_f]Ria[/name_f].

Good luck!

[name_f]Arcadia[/name_f] NN [name_u]Ari[/name_u] would be my favorite. Have you also thought of [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] NN [name_u]Story[/name_u]?

[name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_u]June[/name_u]
Avalon
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Celia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f]/[name_f]Tess[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Cora[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f]Reverie[/name_f]
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f]
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Tempest[/name_f]
[name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_u]Arden[/name_u]
[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]

Ceder is strong yet femenine, whimsical yet substantial.

[name_m]Ah[/name_m] I love nature names! [name_f]Willow[/name_f] [name_u]Harper[/name_u] is lovely. [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] doesn’t strike me as masculine or feminine, just very pleasant and unique. I worry that because of its sound and unusualness it might be hard to understand the first time around, e.g. “[name_m]Hi[/name_m], my name is [name_u]Cedar[/name_u].” “Huh? Seater? Seeder?” “CE-DAR, like the tree!”

I second the combos [name_f]Arcadia[/name_f] [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] and [name_f]Arcadia[/name_f] [name_u]Winter[/name_u]. They go great with [name_f]Willow[/name_f] [name_u]Harper[/name_u]!

I would also suggest:
[name_f]Acacia[/name_f]
[name_u]Aspen[/name_u] (unfortunate first syllable?)
[name_f]Bryony[/name_f]
[name_f]Cascade[/name_f] (could also have nn [name_f]Cady[/name_f])
[name_f]Cassia[/name_f]
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f]
[name_f]Cypress[/name_f] (first felt like this one was “masculine”, but as it rhymes with princess, empress, etc. I now feel that it is feminine)
[name_f]Evening[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Lark[/name_f]
[name_u]Linden[/name_u]
[name_u]Juniper[/name_u] (cute nn potential)
[name_f]Saffron[/name_f]
[name_f]Sapphire[/name_f]
[name_f]Season[/name_f] (one of my favorites)
[name_u]Sequoia[/name_u]
[name_f]Zinnia[/name_f]

A while back I saw a little girl named [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] [name_f]Belle[/name_f] and I fell in love with it! I think [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] is nice with [name_f]Willow[/name_f], though a bit theme-y.

I have to agree with jadnf. When I imagine hearing “[name_u]Cedar[/name_u]” called at the park, I think I would hear “seeder.” It’s one of those words that’s prettier written than said, in my opinion. Sorry!

I don’t think it’s too masculine, though the only [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] I know is male. I quite like it as a name but I’m hesitant to pair it with [name_f]Willow[/name_f] since that seems so matchy. I like [name_f]Arcadia[/name_f] with [name_f]Willow[/name_f] the best. [name_u]Winter[/name_u] and [name_f]Willow[/name_f] are a little much for me. I’d prefer [name_f]Indie[/name_f] with [name_f]Willow[/name_f].

[name_f]Willow[/name_f] and [name_u]Sunny[/name_u]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f] and [name_u]River[/name_u]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f] and [name_u]Sage[/name_u]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f] and [name_f]Zinnia[/name_f]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f] and [name_f]Birdie[/name_f]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f] and [name_f]Clover[/name_f]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f] and [name_u]Clove[/name_u]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f] and [name_u]Dove[/name_u]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f] and [name_u]Wren[/name_u]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f] and [name_f]Nova[/name_f]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f] and [name_u]Rue[/name_u]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f] and [name_u]Artemis[/name_u]

I agree, [name_u]Indigo[/name_u] or [name_f]India[/name_f] are the only two that would make sense on a business card… What about [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]?? Or [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f]?

[name_u]Cedar[/name_u] does feel masculine.

I think [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] is better on paper than it is in practice. [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] makes me think “seedy,” which isn’t a good word to associate with a person. I think [name_f]Arcadia[/name_f] is beautiful. [name_f]Willow[/name_f] and [name_f]Arcadia[/name_f]? My second choice from your list is [name_u]Indigo[/name_u]. It’s bluesy and spunky, and I’d love to see it used.

I am particular to [name_u]Aspen[/name_u] (see my daughter’s name below :D), but I think [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] could work if you paired it with something very feminine in the middle.

A beautiful choice would be [name_f]Spring[/name_f].

[name_u]Cedar[/name_u] is lovely- I think it works for either a boy or a girl really quite well. The ‘ce’ opening is similar to a lot of other girls names ([name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], [name_f]Celeste[/name_f], [name_f]Celia[/name_f], [name_f]Celine[/name_f], etc.), and the ‘a’ ending is of course, popular for girls, so I think it works beautifully.

I don’t necessarily dislike [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] but feel that 2 tree types is a little too matchy. I like [name_u]Winter[/name_u] but do struggle with those names being applied out of context (ie an [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] born in the [name_f]Spring[/name_f]).

Out of your list [name_f]Arcadia[/name_f] and [name_u]Indigo[/name_u] are both nice.

Have you considered [name_f]Laurel[/name_f]? It is a beautiful name, pairs well with [name_f]Willow[/name_f] and keeps the overall nature theme without boxing you in to trees specifically.

I actually do like [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] but if you are looking for something more feminine what about [name_f]Waverley[/name_f]?

I think [name_u]Oakley[/name_u] would go perfect with [name_f]Willow[/name_f]

Thank you so much for everyone’s feedback, I really appreciate it!

[name_u]Winter[/name_u] is gorgeous. I dont think it matters when she’s born. People are called [name_f]Summer[/name_f] and [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] all year round.
[name_f]Arcadia[/name_f] - I prefer [name_f]Acadia[/name_f] or [name_f]Acacia[/name_f] if I’m honest!
[name_u]Indigo[/name_u] - It is ‘hippy,’ I can see what you mean. Is that a bad thing to you though? It is a sweet name, but people are likely to call her [name_f]Indie[/name_f] for short (which imo is sweet, but you may not like it)
[name_u]Cedar[/name_u] - this does feel masculine to me but I can see it working on a girl.
