Thoughts on Bebe?

My husband really likes the name [name]Bebe[/name]. I’m concerned with pronunciation issues, ie people saying “[name]Bee[/name]-[name]Bee[/name]” instead of “[name]Bay[/name]-[name]Bay[/name]”. I’ve always liked the name, but completely unsure about actually naming a baby this. She will have two older brothers, [name]Atticus[/name] and [name]Dexter[/name].
Thanks!

I think the majority of people will pronounce this correctly, if not all. With brothers [name]Atticus[/name] and [name]Dexter[/name], I would use [name]Bianca[/name] nn [name]Bebe[/name]. I think it’s probably best to give her a formal name, because it will give her more options as she grows up. She may want to have a more formal name to fall back on. I think that, while it’s obviously important that you like her formal name, it does not matter as much if you plan on using her nickname all the time. That being said, I think [name]Bebe[/name] is adorable, and [name]Bianca[/name] would fit in pretty well with her brothers because it has history and literary connections, as well as a lovely sound!

I don’t think [name]Bebe[/name] works as a given name, and the pronunciation bay-bay is not intuitive. I would definitely say bee-bee.

I would give her an alliterative first and middle, like [name]Bianca[/name] [name]Belle[/name] (just an example) or name her something with a Bi or Be beginning like [name]Bianca[/name], as suggested by a pp, or maybe [name]Beatrice[/name].

Given that the French word ‘bebe’ (with acute accents on the ‘e’s’) means ‘baby’, I wouldn’t go there.

Honestly, I think it’s a little silly once she’s not a baby anymore. I’d only use it as a nickname.

I agtee, it’s not a great name for an adult. I’d definitely pronounce it bee-bee (I’ve heard this pronunciation on the TV show [name]Frasier[/name]. I’ve never actually met a [name]Bebe[/name]).

Was also going to mention the Fraiser character (Whom i freakin’ loved!) and say i’d automatically say [name]Bee[/name]-[name]Bee[/name]. I can’t really see the appeal of [name]Bay[/name]-[name]Bay[/name] my self. I think it is too cutesy, and isn’t as stunning as her brothers name.

I really like [name]Beatrice[/name] nick name [name]Bee[/name]-bee (not bay-bay)

Frankly, I don’t think it is name that ages well. I would not want a name that essentially sounds like baby.

i dont like it mainly i know a male [name]Bebe[/name] lol

I agree with this.

I would never name my child [name]Bebe[/name], it’s also the Spanish term for baby.

I would say bee-bee and only as a nickname for [name]Bianca[/name], [name]Beatrice[/name], [name]Elizabeth[/name], etc…

[name]Bebe[/name] “baybay” feels like a hard name to have as an adult…especially if she did much traveling.

What about [name]Bay[/name] if you love that sound or something w/ nn [name]Bay[/name]?

I really dislike [name]Bebe[/name].

[name]Bebe[/name] in French is baby which for me is a negative attribute of a name and will result in people calling her baby. When your daughter is an adult she most likely will find that annoying. I also think the name feels pompous as people do name their daughter’s ‘[name]Baby[/name]’ and it’s like your trying to be unique via using the French word for ‘[name]Baby[/name]’. This choice is aggravating and doesn’t go with the adorable classic choices of [name]Atticus[/name] and [name]Dexter[/name]. Nevertheless if you do like [name]Bebe[/name] I would use the name as a middle name for a really strong classic like [name]Miriam[/name] or [name]Eve[/name].

Wow, I’m really surprised at the overwhelming negative response! I’ve always been familiar with the name [name]Bebe[/name], from [name]Bebe[/name] [name]Buell[/name] and [name]Bebe[/name] Neuwirth and always liked it. I’m not a huge nickname person, unless the nn is really a direct derivation of the name. So many girls names are sounding the same to me. Looking for something pretty and quirky. I also like [name]Babette[/name]- then could use [name]Bebe[/name] or even [name]Bette[/name]. However, it doesn’t flow at all with our last name. Hmm…

[name]Bibi[/name] seems to have history in Persian and Swahili. It also has Latin origins. It’s pronounced [name]Bebe[/name]

If you are in the US there is a chance that people (at least women) with know the store [name]BeBe[/name] and therefore pronounce it correctly. (Theoretically!)

With brothers [name]Atticus[/name] and [name]Dexter[/name] I think [name]Bebe[/name] works better as a nn. It just doesn’t feel substantial enough and almost strikes me as if you were “lazily” naming your child baby. Only because [name]Atticus[/name] and [name]Dexter[/name] are amazing and intriguing and stunning choices and [name]Bebe[/name] feels flimsy in comparison.

I like pp’s suggestions and really like the idea of [name]Beatrice[/name], [name]Elizabeth[/name], or even [name]Babette[/name].

My friend has this as a surname and it’s pronounced [name]Bee[/name]-[name]Bee[/name]. Pronouncing it BayBay is awful, it sounds like you’re saying [name]Baby[/name] wrong

I grew up on a farm. My father always called the calves in by calling out, “bébé!” I assumed that’s how other farmers did it as well.

I don’t think it’s a human’s name and certainly not one for an adult!

Please watch the old cartoon movie “[name]Bebe[/name]'s Kids” before going with that name! Great movie, just not sure I would want that association with my child’s name.

I’m seconding this. I had forgotten about “[name]Bebe[/name]'s Kids”, but it’s a terrible association.

Holy cow, it’s not like I made up the name or the pronunciation, jeez!

No, I don’t think anyone thinks you have, don’t worry we all have names we like/love that the majority of nameberry dislikes! But you know when this is the response you get on nameberry this is most likely the response you’re going to get from people, or worse! That’s why it is such a great place to try out a name, you can get people’s honest reactions.
