I was wondering how you guys feel about the name [name_u]Calypso[/name_u]. It has always been one of my GP names but I’ve started to wonder if it would be usable.
Thanks for the help ![]()

I love [name_u]Calypso[/name_u]! It’s so fun and beach-y. Definitely usable!
I love the name but prefer [name_f]Callisto[/name_f] to it! I think it’s beautiful on its own however and if you love it go for it!
I like it too! It’s bouncy and fun, with a long history and an unusually mild mythological backstory (by Greek myth standards anyway!)
I really like [name_u]Calypso[/name_u]. It’s got Greek roots in the story of [name_u]Calypso[/name_u]. She was a daughter of the titan [name_u]Atlas[/name_u] and she was stuck on an island called Ogygia for all eternity because she supported the Titans in the [name_m]Titan[/name_m]-God war. [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] was not evil or mean-spirited though. [name_u]Atlas[/name_u] was her father! But not many people know the story anyways.
Pirates of the Caribbean is all that comes to mind. I don’t even know why but for some reason that association has stuck with me for ages and I can’t ignore it no matter how hard I try
I actually love the name but every time I see or say it, all I can think of is that character. Other than that it is a lovely name and quite refreshing to see. It’s slightly out there but easy to spell and pronounce which makes it so appealing
I have never seen pirates of the Caribbean, so i did not know that association. Thank you for letting me know
I think it’s usable
I love [name_u]Calypso[/name_u]! I’m a dancer so I’ve considered this for that connection as well. Unfortunately, I can’t stand [name_f]Callie[/name_f] so it’s no-go for me, but I love it for other people!
I think it’s a fun GP name but not so usable, at least in the US.
I love it. Im Greek, so love most Greek names.
I do prefer [name_f]Calista[/name_f] though, have a cousin with the variation Kalyssa.
I like it. And the meaning (at least the one on NM) is super mysterious which I like. “she who hides…”
I love [name_u]Calypso[/name_u]. It’s beautiful and bold. I think it’s familiar enough that it could work!
While I also think of Greek mythology, my first association is always Pirates of the Caribbean (even though, like @sweetcaroline, I have no idea why that is still such a strong connection in my mind!). It isn’t a bad association though, I liked the character. I think [name_f]Callie[/name_f] and [name_f]Calla[/name_f] are sweet nickname options too. Or perhaps something like [name_u]Coco[/name_u]?
I also love the suggestions of [name_f]Callisto[/name_f] and [name_f]Callista[/name_f]! You might also like [name_f]Callixta[/name_f]/Calixta!
I like [name_f]Callisto[/name_f] and [name_f]Callista[/name_f] and [name_f]Callixta[/name_f]! And I can see how those might work better in the modern world
Thanks for the suggestions!
I know a [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] personally. She’s about 23, and it’s amazing on her. Especially since she’s got quite a basic last name, it really feels completely fine. It’s definitely usable!
It’s one of those names that just rolls beautifully off the tongue and while most people have heard it (either from the mythology or from Pirates of the Caribbean) it still remains super unique.
I’d be stoked to see [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] being used!
Ps, for what it’s worth, I think the [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] association from PotC is a positive one. She’s a badass, beautiful goddess who is wonderfully portrayed. The backstory is slightly tragic, but way less than popular names like [name_f]Mary[/name_f] or [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]. If anything, the Greek story is worse.
Sharing a name with the goddess of the sea is not to be sneezed at
I think it’s badass
I love it, although it does make me think of Calippo for some reason (not that that’s necessarily a bad thing). Definitely usable.
Calypso has a kind of soothing elegance
Love it! It used to be my absolute favourite name so I’d love to see it being used, and I think it definitely can be especially with the similarity to other names mentioned. I agree with @alatari that it’s super uncommon but still recognisable.
Definitely usable (I used to do dance with a [name_u]Calypso[/name_u]!). I might prefer [name_f]Callisto[/name_f], but as a lover of mythology and mythological names, I’m definitely an advocate.
