Thoughts on Catcher

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] berries! So, I was reading a book yesterday that I’m really enjoying (The [name_m]Forest[/name_m] Of Hands And Teeth series) and one of the character’s names caught my eye. Catcher. I’m not even sure if it’s a real name, but it’s growing on me. I looked on other sights, and most of the feedback was negative, but I wanted to see what you all thought of the name. So, is Catcher an appropriate name?

Great name for a Labrador.

We have to draw the line somewhere, and unfortunately I think Catcher is on the wrong side of that line.

I’m not sure! I did see it used in the movie ‘Down with [name_u]Love[/name_u]’ and [name_m]Ewan[/name_m] [name_m]McGregor[/name_m] played Catcher Block. I think it’s cute but I’m not sure if it’s because the name itself or [name_m]Ewan[/name_m] [name_m]McGregor[/name_m] is cute, lol. I guess you would have to think about how it would wear over time and if it would age well.

I never would have thought that names like [name_m]Archer[/name_m] or [name_u]Sailor[/name_u] would become the new norm but they have so Catcher isn’t out of the ordinary at all!

I don’t like it, personally - but I generally dislike ‘profession’ names like [name_u]Hunter[/name_u] and [name_u]Sailor[/name_u]. I think it would work better on a pet than a person

I’m not a fan. I’ve heard “catcher” being used as a sexual slang term.

I’m surprised that no one has mentioned the well known sexual connotation of “catcher”. It is a common term for a man who prefers to be the " bottom" in a gay relationship. For this reason it would make a terrible name.

I love it! Refreshing, fun, but not weird.

I immediately thought of the connotations @lovewn mentioned. Sorry  Plus, I just don’t think it works for a human name in real life, makes for a fun book character’s name though!

agreed with lovewn , was waiting to see if anybody else brough it up first. Sorry, I think Catcher is…unusable. Similar name like [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m] or [name_m]Baxter[/name_m] appeal to you maybe?

I think it could easily pass as a name.

A bit too out there for me, and I’m totally okay with names like [name_m]Archer[/name_m], [name_u]Sailor[/name_u] or [name_u]Hunter[/name_u] (though they’re not my taste personally). I didn’t realize it had a sexual connotation. My first thought was Catcher in the [name_m]Rye[/name_m], then a catcher in baseball.

Unfortunately, I agree with @lumen. This is best saved for a pet

Not a big fan, personally. Feels like a pet’s name. Honestly thought you were going to ask about Catcher in the [name_m]Rye[/name_m]-- I know a little boy named [name_m]Holden[/name_m] and I like that name a lot.

I, too, thought it was a weird Catcher in the Rye tribute. cactusgram’s mention of Down With Love made me think twice, though- I thought Catcher Block sounded so cool at the time!

Honestly, if you used it for a little boy, I don’t think it would raise that many eyebrows, especially if he’s going to school with other kids who have occupational/surname-type names. It’s not my cup of tea, but neither is Sailor/Saylor, which seems to be on fire right now.

Due to sexual connotations this is unusable.

I don’t think it would work as a name for a child.
