Name chosen! Thanks!
I know a [name_m]Collier[/name_m] in his early twenties. It’s his grandmother’s maiden name, and he’s proud to wear it because of the family significance. However, he’s told me that he does get a lot of comments about it being “weird” and people calling him Collar instead [name_m]Collier[/name_m].
I’m neutral on [name_m]Collier[/name_m]. It seems like a strange choice if there’s no personal significance. Is there a particular reason you’ve chosen [name_m]Collier[/name_m]? Are there any other names you’ve considered for the middle spot?
I love this name and am incredibly surprised it hasn’t taken off recently. The only place I’ve ever heard it was on some old tv show that I can’t even remember the name of – it was the son’s name and they were in the South, so it was always with a southern accent and I just thought it always sounded so handsome.
I can see why people looking at it might not like it (Collar, [name_f]Collie[/name_f]/dog), but the sound is so distinguishing from any of those things that it transcends for me. [name_m]Collier[/name_m] Cornwell is a bit heavy on the l’s, BUT I am a fan of repetitive sounds, so it doesn’t bother me – I’m just mentioning it so it doesn’t escape your attention.
Definitely a fan – I would absolutely [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] to meet a little [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Collier[/name_m] (called [name_m]Collier[/name_m]).
@southern.maple - no, there’s no family significance, but we live in the south and with all the trending surnames as first names, we wanted something a little different than the Bennetts and Millers. Any different suggestions if you don’t like collier?
@catheyc - thank you for your response! I’m glad I’m not the only one who loves this name!!
Any other comments or suggestions are appreciated!
I love [name_m]Collier[/name_m] but can’t use it (there’s a county named [name_m]Collier[/name_m] near me). It’s an occupation name so you don’t need family significance anymore than all of the people naming their kids [name_u]Harper[/name_u] or [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u].
I was right! This babe is indeed a BOY! I would love a few more thoughts on this name from others!!!
It makes me think of coal mining (a collier is a coal miner) and border collies but that’s probably because of where I live (we having farming and mining in the area and family). I’d probably also assume the name had some significance as a family surname/maiden name but again that’s most likely because of where I live. If surnames for fn’s are common where you are and you really like it I’d say go for it and use James Collier.
As a middle name it’s cool, but definitely not a first. I grew up with a weird family middle name (Deland). Pretty much hated it until I was 15 and realized it was cool to be unique.
Congrats on your little boy!
[name_m]Collier[/name_m] is a commercial real estate firm here, so that’s what it brings to mind. But I do see it as fitting with the overall trend of surname-as-first-name while being a bit different. I guess I would hesitate at the possible nns… I am around dogs, so [name_f]Collie[/name_f] wouldn’t be my first choice.

I personally dislike [name_m]Collier[/name_m] as it reminds me too much of border collie dogs, and while I could see it as a middle name, possibly, I can’t see it being used as a name he’d be called by. Doesn’t feel “name-y” enough.

Thanks for your suggestions and input. [name_m]Collier[/name_m] in our part of the south is pronounced more like “call-yer” and not “coll-ee-er”, so the collie dog connection isn’t really there. [name_f]Collie[/name_f] would definitely not be a nickname choice! There’s also no confusion on pronunciation bc there’s a very popular road named this that everyone in the area must travel.
We had played around with [name_m]Cullen[/name_m], but it seems too dull to me. The other suggestions that were C’s are very close to our actual last name, so they don’t work. Open to hearing more ideas. [name_u]Chandler[/name_u] or [name_u]Channing[/name_u] are ok, but husband doesn’t like them at all.
I previously posted some ‘C’ suggestions.
I can see how [name_m]Cullen[/name_m] may sound a little somber.
I didn’t say so in my original post, but for the record, I do like [name_m]Collier[/name_m] and I’m in [name_u]California[/name_u] and would have no problem pronouncing it. [name_m]Just[/name_m] to give you a pronunciation perspective from a different part of the country.
Great thinking. I like [name_m]Collier[/name_m]. I have never heard that name used as a first. This will go great with his Daddy’s name!
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Collier[/name_m], what about [name_m]Currier[/name_m] or [name_m]Crispin[/name_m]?
I must prefer collies to people b/c I love the name!
Thanks for your help and suggestions! I hadn’t thought of [name_m]Crispin[/name_m]! I doubt my husband will go for that, but I love the sound! I’ll run it by him
