Thoughts on Courtney?

I love the name [name_u]Courtney[/name_u] on a boy, but I’m worried about the implications as here in NZ it’s only ever really heard as a girls name.

What do you guys think? Would you use it on a boy, why or why not?

I think I prefer this on a boy actually, and [name_m]Court[/name_m] is a cool nickname

I would assume [name_u]Courtney[/name_u] was a girl so I wouldn’t use it for a boy. I like renrose’s suggestion of [name_m]Court[/name_m]. I really like that, but I would use it on its own with a longer middle. A couple ideas…

[name_m]Court[/name_m] [name_m]Matthias[/name_m]
[name_m]Court[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]
[name_m]Court[/name_m] [name_u]Jameson[/name_u]

I love it. [name_u]Courtney[/name_u] is quite masculine to me. Nothing wrong with a boy having a gender bending name.

Nope. It’s gone girl sadly. I feel like he would be teased.

I think the nickname [name_m]Court[/name_m] is great, and I feel it to be quite a masculine name, but I think it’ll end up relegated to the middle name spot because of the potential teasing it may cause

I always thought it was a girl’s name. Reminds me of [name_u]Courtney[/name_u] [name_u]Love[/name_u]. Dislike it on a boy.

Its right with [name_u]Whitney[/name_u] & [name_f]Wendy[/name_f], sure they’re ‘unisex’ but i prefer these on girls and [name_m]Court[/name_m], [name_u]Whit[/name_u] & Wen are great on boys but I think its a bit much on a boy in full

In the USA I think [name_u]Courtney[/name_u] has pretty much entirely become a girls’ name. I can think of one male [name_u]Courtney[/name_u]–the lead singer of the band the Dandy Warhols, but I think everyone would assume from seeing/hearing the name that [name_u]Courtney[/name_u] would be a girl.

Someone was asking a similar question about [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] a while back. I wonder if these names will ever start being used in large numbers again for boys. Personally, I wouldn’t be comfortable naming a boy [name_u]Courtney[/name_u], but I do feel a bit bad about that since I hate that there’s such a double standard concerning “masculine” names for girls and “feminine” (even though of course these started out as boys’ names…) names for boys.

I would never ever ever do that to a boy.

I agree that it’s a girl name, but I do know a little boy named Cortlan… What do you think of that name?

I know a couple men with the name [name_u]Courtney[/name_u], and it fits both of them nicely. I would love to see it used on a little boy. I think if you go with a strong, masculine middle that you love, one that he could use if for some reason [name_u]Courtney[/name_u] got him teased, it would be perfect.

I agree, it’s a bit too girly. Reminds me of Ms [name_u]Love[/name_u]. Maybe in 5-10 years it will be more usable, but for now, how about [name_u]Courtland[/name_u] or [name_m]Curt[/name_m]?

It’s very handsome. I’ve known males named [name_u]Courtney[/name_u]

I would ignore the ‘he will be teased’ comments. You could name the kid [name_m]John[/name_m] and he’d still be teased. Everyone gets teased; that’s life. Teasing is such a weak excuse used to scare people away from using unisex names on boys.

I think [name_u]Courtney[/name_u]‘s heyday is over, although it’ll still be associated with girls for awhile. I certainly think of it as a girls’ name, even more so than others in this category. But I also really dislike the double standard we have regarding giving girls boys’ names but not finding it acceptable to give boys traditional boys’ names like [name_u]Lyndsay[/name_u] or [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], which happen to be really handsome names! I tend to applaud choices like this, but I’m not very mainstream. If you chose to use it, I think you should use a mn that would be a more normal alternative in case your son doesn’t feel comfortable with [name_u]Courtney[/name_u].
I don’t know why, but I also feel like it’s somehow less of a commitment to use it as a mn but choose to call him by his mn. Still what you’d be saying every day, but perhaps not so strange to switch to using the official first name if [name_u]Courtney[/name_u] really doesn’t work in your environment.

Agree.
I think [name_u]Courtney[/name_u] is dated for a girl, but fresh on a boy. [name_u]Love[/name_u] nn [name_m]Court[/name_m].

[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_u]Courtney[/name_u] on a boy and the nn [name_m]Court[/name_m].

I know two Courtneys. One is a 20 year old girl (seems so dated) and a 30 something guy (seems fresh and unexpected).

I commented in this post already, however I wanted to add that I do prefer these names on boys as I prefer [name_f]Wendy[/name_f] & [name_u]Whitney[/name_u] as well as [name_u]Lindsay[/name_u] & [name_u]Aubry[/name_u] on boys (that have since been mentioned) and it made me think… Its clear to me in many places they are seem as feminine now, however I think if you love a name and want to give it to a boy I don’t see a problem, though you should take everything into account  if you’re in the states you’ll have a harder time I guess as they were popular for a while on girls. :-/
