I used to live on an [name]Ellery[/name] St, and I’ve recently started thinking of it as a wonderful name. I’ve heard/written “[name]Ellery[/name]” so much from living there so long that I have no idea what it sounds like on fresh ears, so… thoughts?
I used to LOVE Ellery. I had Ellery Jane, nn Ella, on my list. I also really liked Ellery Madeleine and Ellery Jewel… I think those are sweet, too. When I found out it was unisex, that kinda put me off of the name (I’m not a fan of unisex names on girls at all, lol), but I still like it. I much prefer Ellery to it’s more dated, familiar counterpart, Hilary.
When I posted about it in the past (on another naming site), the biggest complaints were that it was unisex, and that it sounded like “celery” without the “C” on the beginning. I’m not sure how that’s a bad thing? Still, that’s what I heard when I posted about it.
I agree with the previous poster, [name]Ellery[/name] to me sounds too much like celery. [name]Ellery[/name] just feels a bit too made up for my tastes. I think there are many better [name]El[/name]-names out there.
I have it on my list too, but have the same feeling as ashthedreamer about unisex names. My other feeling is that even though [name]Ellery[/name] is not that common, if she’s called [name]Ellie[/name] as a nn, she’ll be one of many, many Ellies, given how many popular names like [name]Eleanor[/name] and [name]Ella[/name] have that nn.
I never thought of “celery.” Nothing offensive about celery anyway!
I like the street-as-namesake connection!
Honestly I’m not a big fan of the name. I know a rather annoying girl named [name]Ellery[/name], which kind of ruined it for me, but the sound isn’t appealing to me anyway. It reminds me of “holler” in a way. [name]Just[/name] kind of Southern and hokey (not that there’s anything wrong with Southern names :))
I think it’s lovely. As far as it being unisex, is it really? [name]How[/name] many people nowadays are naming their sons [name]Ellery[/name]? Few if any, its along the lines of [name]Sydney[/name] having pretty much jumped the line over to the girls side. And since it is a little different why would you want to call her [name]Ellie[/name] rather than her more distinctive formal name.
I really liked the name, [name]Ellery[/name], and even had it on my list…until my six year old told me it sounded too much like celery. Still I say go for it, especially since it has a personal connection for you!
[name]Ellery[/name] is on my list for a boy, but I like it for a girl too. I’ve found it’s one of those names that the people in my life just don’t like, though, so we probably won’t use it.
My daughters name is [name]Ellery[/name] and we still get compliments on it!!! It’s such a great name!! We call her [name]Ellie[/name] or [name]Elle[/name]. (Or you can spell it [name]Ellary[/name] and nickname her [name]Ella[/name], or Ellori and nickname her [name]Lori[/name].) I’ve actually heard of some people naming boys [name]Ellery[/name] but, in my opinion I just don’t see how that could work.
I think [name]Ellery[/name] is a lovely name! I don’t think it matters one bit that it sounds like celery or that it’s unisex. I personally like it for a girl best, but I can see it working on a boy too. I love the connection to your past home! I say go for it!
It doesn’t sound like celery to me, because I (and most people around me, thus why I learned it that way) say celery more like celry (only two syllables). I assume [name]Ellery[/name] has three…
It is a boys name. All boy. It’s my brothers’ name. It isn’t a girls name. Boys name.
I love Celery with peanut butter.
[name]Ellery[/name] is just not good as a name, I’m sorry.
[name]Ellery[/name] is really pretty, if you can get past the fact that it sounds like celery.
I would use it as mn though. I like Medieval sounding names and it reminds me of the name of a name in a historical romance novel.
The spelling Eleri is cute too!
I like that [name]Ellery[/name] is a unique name, and I love the nickname [name]Ellie[/name]. But the possibility that she could be teased about the celery thing is always there. (Kids are mean- what can you do?) If you’re willing to look at other names, [name]Elliot[/name] or just plain [name]Elle[/name] could be good substitutions.
I’m pretty positive [name]Eleri[/name] is not pronounced the same. [name]Eleri[/name] is more like “[name]El[/name]-ayr-ee”, stress on the second syllable.
It is a boys name. Not for girls
PLEASE stop treating [name]Ellery[/name] as a girls name. It is a boys name.
We almost named our 2nd daughter ([name]Vienna[/name]) [name]Ellery[/name]. So obviously, I love the name. To me, it sounds feminine, like [name]Hillary[/name]. I know it can also be, and historically is, a boys name. My daughter has a little boy in her pre-school named [name]Ellery[/name], so now I can easily picture it on a boy too. I think it’s climbing the charts in popularity. And I agree that if she’s called [name]Ellie[/name], than it loses its appeal for me.
I’m not usually concerned about unisex names or switching genders. It just reminds me of the author of old detective stories that my grandma used to read when I was little - [name]Ellery[/name] [name]Queen[/name]. At the time I always thought it was a girl’s name. I think it has a pretty sound to it.
