Thoughts on Elva

[name_f]Elva[/name_f] is a family name, I like the meaning, and my husband really likes it. I’m on the fence. Partly because I want to avoid the nn “[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]”, which I think will be common with all the Eleanors of a similar age. It would be great if there were other nn options. What do you think of the name in general?

I love the name! I think it’s really cute, but I think she will be called [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] or [name_f]Elle[/name_f] quite often by others. I have the same problem with certain names, i [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the full name but don’t want people to use nicknames.

[name_f]Elva[/name_f] is cute but sophisticated.
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f] and [name_f]Elle[/name_f] could well happen but [name_f]Elle[/name_f] feels more likely as [name_f]Elva[/name_f] is short as it is

I think [name_f]Elva[/name_f] is lovely! It’s unique and while it does make me think of elves a bit it’s in the mystical and fantastical way and not in the cutesy Christmassy way. It adds a bit of a bohemian vibe to a simple and old-fashioned name.
I think an [name_f]Elva[/name_f] would usually get called either her full name or [name_f]Elle[/name_f]. Maybe [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] by her friends sometimes, but not as her go-to name unless she decided it herself.

I really love it! [name_f]Elva[/name_f] is equal in length to [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] so I think that it probably won’t be shortened too much

It’s very pretty.

[name_f]Elva[/name_f] does have quite a dated feel to it, however, I do feel it’s ready for a comeback. It has a similar vibe and sound to it as the popular [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] (without the currently strong Disney association), and has a sweet whimsy to it, with its elvish sound. It’s even more fantastic being that it is a family name for you, and also, that your husband likes it!

As for the nickname, I think ‘[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]’ could be avoided quite easily. [name_f]Elva[/name_f] is short enough in itself, and if you only ever refer to her as [name_f]Elva[/name_f], and correct people instantly if they try ‘[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]’, it shouldn’t catch on. That is, of course, unless [name_f]Elva[/name_f] herself prefers ‘[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]’ as she grows up, which could well be a possibility.

[name_f]Elva[/name_f] is a beautifully whimsical, vintage name ready for rejuvenation.

I want to like it but it makes me think of an elf. I think [name_f]Elka[/name_f], Elkie, or [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] would be better.

I’m a firm believer that nicknames can be anything you want them to be, they can be a “stretch” or even something random, as long as it feels right for your child (which might not be apparent until well after they’re born).
I like [name_f]Elle[/name_f] or [name_f]Vivi[/name_f], but [name_f]Elva[/name_f] works well on its own.

I’m unsure/ambivalent. I think it could be really cute on the right person, i.e. a cute person, haha. It reminds me of [name_m]Elvis[/name_m], which I find unattractive. It also seems like a less glamorous [name_f]Elvira[/name_f]. I like the fact that it’s a traditional Irish and Scandinavian name, it’s simple, old-fashioned and familiar but also distinctive.
