DH and I liked [name_m]Kingston[/name_m] a lot but just as we got over the Mormon association, we found out that it’s a no-go for my mom for personal reasons that I won’t go into here.
We still love the -ton ending for boy names, and we’ve always had an affinity for Ev- beginnings. So naturally, we’re starting to fall in love with the name Everton!
It means “boar town”/“brave and hardy” and it’s supposedly one of the most ancient surnames from [name_m]Britain[/name_m].
On the negative side, it seems to be primarily known for the Everton Football (Soccer) Club near Liverpool and there is a district of Liverpool called Everton that unfortunately appears to be a run-down area.
But I’m pretty sure that both those associations are extremely obscure.
What would you guys think upon meeting a baby named Everton? DH and I think it sounds sophisticated and unique without being too out-there. We’d use [name_u]Evan[/name_u] and Ev as nicknames as well.
I think it depends on where you live. In the UK, most people would probably think the football club and he could run into some teasing for that, but if you don’t, it sounds sweet and I love the nicknames you’ve picked out!
My first assocciation is the football club, and I dont even live in UK. I much prefer Everson and [name_u]Everett[/name_u], though Everton isnt terrible…
When I say Everton it feels very sharp or choppy to me, kind of lacking flow or warmth. I prefer Everson, [name_m]Evander[/name_m], [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] & [name_u]Everett[/name_u] because they roll of the tongue better and feel warmer and friendlier.
I had thought about [name_u]Everett[/name_u] but for me, that is harder to pronounce/doesn’t roll off the tongue right. Everson to me sounds to close to [name_u]Emerson[/name_u].
I guess the Everton Football Club isn’t really a bad association to have with a name, and where I live ([name_u]California[/name_u]), I doubt many people will immediately think of it?
I think Everton is a great name! Definitely unique but without being hard to spell or say at all. In [name_u]Cali[/name_u] the associations with the UK really shouldnt be overwhelming- I actually think they are kind of a nice subtle tie to the regal (and British) image the name [name_m]Kingston[/name_m] conjures.
Anyone mildly interested in football will associate the name with the team as they are a Premiership side. (And obviously UK football is the best!) Also it is the first thing that comes up when you do an Internet search, however if you live in [name_u]California[/name_u] and it isn’t a big thing for you, then go for it.
Wow, I didn’t know the Everton FC was so popular! I’d never heard of it before Google searching for the name Everton. I hope the association isn’t that overwhelming for you in [name_u]Cali[/name_u].
Personally, I like the name a lot! It evokes the same wintry, sophisticated feel that [name_u]Everett[/name_u] does and that [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] used to (before it became girl territory). I agree with a previous poster that also pointed out that it’s unique but not hard to pronounce or spell, so it sounds familiar enough without being common at all.
I am personally not a fan. It sounds very made up; like half one name and half the other. I’m sorry to say! Plus I think the connection to the team is maybe a bit too strong.

I’ve assuming the pronunciation is EV, not EEV, but I did wonder about that initially. I don’t think Everton would sound out of place with names like [name_u]Everett[/name_u] and [name_u]Everly[/name_u] being popular, but it does have a very different feeling from [name_m]Kingston[/name_m]. Since I’m not familiar with the football club or actual place, I would have imagined it as a British boarding school.
