I adore the name [name]Julian[/name] and it is also my husband’s Grandfather’s name. However, I am hesitating to use the name for I fear that - even though [name]Julian[/name] is a boy name through and through - a little [name]Julian[/name] may be teased for his name’s similarity to the girl’s names [name]Julie[/name], [name]Julianne[/name], [name]Julia[/name], etc. I also fear that people may see the name and automatically think that [name]Julian[/name] is a girl. In fact, I remember reading on the forum once that someone’s son who was named [name]Julian[/name] was sometimes mistaken for a girl when only his name was mentioned.
Please be honest:
Would you use the name [name]Julian[/name] for a boy?
(Maybe the better question is - would you ever use it for a girl or have you heard it used for a girl?)
Would you hesitate based on its similarity to the girl names?
Would you fear that he would be teased?
[name]Do[/name] you know of any boys named [name]Julian[/name] and whether they’ve teased about their name and/or have it mistaken as a girl’s name?
Does it sound like a masculine boy’s name to you?
What nickname would you use for [name]Julian[/name]?
[name]Do[/name] you know of many little Julians in your area and/or in general?
It is a boy’s name, however, I totally understand your concern. To me, it does have a slightly softer less masculine feel to it. It is more metro that manly. I do like the name, but would never use it. Could you use it in the middle?
I just double-checked the SSA stats, and [name]Julian[/name] ranks higher for boys (#53) than any of the feminine forms rank for girls. [name]Julian[/name] is a strong, dashing name for a boy, but yes - on the softer side of masculine. I don’t consider it feminine, although I have met a handful of women named [name]Julie[/name] [name]Ann[/name] or [name]Julianne[/name]. Honestly, I feel like the effemiphobia is very uncalled for. [name]Julian[/name] is a familiar male name, and it’s likely that your son will go to school with at least one other [name]Julian[/name]. Occasionally someone might see his name on paper and mistake him for a girl, but who cares? That isn’t going to make him less of a boy. I don’t even know that name teasing is a thing anymore; regardless, if your son is going to get teased, he’s going to get teased regardless of what you name him.
I’ve heard [name]Julian[/name] nn [name]Jude[/name] before. Not sure of the connection between [name]Julian[/name] and [name]Jude[/name] though. If you aren’t sold on [name]Julian[/name], what about [name]Julius[/name]? I prefer [name]Julian[/name] myself though.
I adore [name]Julian[/name]. It’s stylish, handsome, and classic. Plus you have a family connection. I went to school with 2 Julians and it never occurred to us to tease them for their names. In fact, one of them told us he was concerned his name sounded like a girl’s name and I remember not being able to figure out why. I know one small [name]Julian[/name] too and it suits him perfectly. It’s a boys name. [name]Don[/name]'t worry.
[name]Julian[/name] is all-boy to me. I wouldn’t hesitate to use it at all. The feminine names that are similar don’t feel the same as [name]Julian[/name] to me. [name]Even[/name] [name]Juliana[/name], which is the MOST similar, feels frilly and princessy to me while [name]Julian[/name] is sleek and modern. I’m Hispanic, so I’ve seen it used A LOT and only ever on boys.
If I didn’t know so many, I would use it in a heartbeat. I wouldn’t worry.
Would you use the name [name]Julian[/name] for a boy? Yup!
(Maybe the better question is - would you ever use it for a girl or have you heard it used for a girl?) I have never heard it on a girl and like PP said, it seems really masculine for a girl! I can’t see it on a girl at all personally.
Would you hesitate based on its similarity to the girl names? I wouldnt hesitate! [name]Oliver[/name] sounds like [name]Olivia[/name], [name]Fraser[/name] sounds like [name]Freya[/name], [name]Theo[/name] sounds like [name]Thea[/name] but people still use them!
Would you fear that he would be teased? Nope
[name]Do[/name] you know of any boys named [name]Julian[/name] and whether they’ve teased about their name and/or have it mistaken as a girl’s name? I know of 2 Julians both roughly my age (17-19) and they don’t get bullied at all for their names. I also know a 5 year old [name]Julian[/name] and he hasn’t had any comments about his name as far as I’m aware.
Does it sound like a masculine boy’s name to you? Yes! [name]IMO[/name] [name]Jayden[/name] sounds more feminine than [name]Julian[/name] because of the emphasis on the JAYD but that might just be me. [name]Julian[/name] is pretty masculine to me.
What nickname would you use for [name]Julian[/name]? I dont think it needs a nickname but maybe [name]Lian[/name]? [name]Lee[/name]? Ju? [name]James[/name]’ son on Bleubird Vintage gets nicknamed JuJu, I think.
[name]Do[/name] you know of many little Julians in your area and/or in general? I know 1 younger [name]Julian[/name]
I wouldn’t be worried about it myself. It’s such a well established name (like top 50 in the US or something), most people have probably known someone named [name]Julian[/name] at some point. I’ve known a few.
I don’t find it feminine, it strikes me as more of a strong ancient [name]Roman[/name] name (with the power of the Caesars bringing it even more into the definite masculine category), then a [name]Julia[/name] type name.
I really like the name [name]Julian[/name] - I’d consider using it for a son one day (never for a daughter…it’s all boy to me!). I’ve never met a [name]Julian[/name], which is another reason why it appeals to me. I get an intelligent, slightly quirky image when I think of the name.
I guess there’s teasing potential if there happens to be a [name]Julie[/name] in his class one day. But think of how many unisex names there are out there (the male Rileys I know don’t get teased because there are female Rileys in their class, for example).
As for nicknames, I like the name so much as-is that I probably wouldn’t use one. But perhaps [name]Ian[/name]? [name]Jay[/name]? [name]Jem[/name]? [name]Jules[/name]?
[name]Love[/name] it. I met a little [name]Julian[/name] last night and complimented his mother on her choice. Such a liquid, delicious name.
It’s recognizably masculine. I think it has a bit of art-star swagger to it, actually.
I don’t think [name]Julian[/name] is particularly feminine. Like previous posters said, it’s a well-established boys’ name. I really like it–it sounds noble to me. [name]One[/name] of my best friends is a [name]Julian[/name], and he’s never encountered any teasing problems that I know of. I don’t think it needs a nickname, but you can always use [name]Jules[/name], [name]Jude[/name], or even [name]Ian[/name].
I feel that naming a boy [name]Julian[/name] would be like naming a boy [name]Ashley[/name]–technically a boy’s name, but nowadays…no. Kids are mean. They will tease him, I believe. Perhaps it could be a middle name? Sorry, just my opinion.
I really like the name [name]Julian[/name], not enough to have ever used it but I find it to be dashing, masculine, and it reminds me of [name]Julian[/name] McMahon (what a stud he is). I’d obviously never use it though, with my daughter’s name being [name]Julia[/name]! I prefer [name]Julian[/name] without any nicknames.
I’ve never seen or heard of [name]Julian[/name] on a girl! I have seen [name]Julianne[/name] and [name]Juliana[/name] but never [name]Julian[/name].
I’d never hesitate to use any name based on its similarity to the similar girl names. Like other posters have said - [name]Julian[/name] is a very common boys name and there aren’t any of the feminine versions anywhere close to being as popular.
No, I honestly do not think a male [name]Julian[/name] would be teased because of his name.
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Julian[/name]. It is one of my favorite boy names. I do think it is soft though and if you are a nick namer, I would be careful. But it really is such a handsome name.
If I loved [name]Julian[/name] enough, yes. Unabashedly. I have known a good number of Julians, and the only time I hear the effeminate side of [name]Julian[/name] is when people bring it up on name boards. It wouldn’t be a concern of mine at all. [name]Julian[/name] is all boy to me.
Erm, no. Obviously. I actually prefer the girl versions, so I’d probably end up with a [name]Julia[/name], maybe [name]Juliana[/name] (and even more unlikely, [name]Juliet[/name], but I’d probably use [name]Julian[/name] on a boy before I used [name]Juliet[/name] on a girl) before I ended up with a [name]Julian[/name].
No.
I’ve met several Julians in passing, but I’ve only gone to school with one [name]Julian[/name] (in elementary school) and no one ever teased him.
Yes. If [name]Sebastian[/name] is masculine, why not [name]Julian[/name]?
[name]Jules[/name], most likely. I think [name]Julian[/name] nn [name]Jules[/name] is really cool. Quite androgynous, which I like here (you might not, if you’re so worried he’ll be teased for being a girl). I also like [name]Jude[/name] (a la Hey, [name]Jude[/name]) and [name]Ian[/name].
Like I’ve said, I’ve met a handful of Julians, but none are really children anymore. The [name]Julian[/name] I went to school with is probably in college now, and all the other Julians are full adults. I think it’d be refreshing on a little boy!
I reeeeeeeally disagree there. Ashley is extremely popular on girls born in the late 80s/90s, and has come completely over to the girls’ side. I’ve never heard of a female Julian, except for the one character in Children of Men, and that felt weird to me, like naming a girl Brian.
And any time someone asks about teasing, I feel obligated to point out that weird names are becoming the norm, name-related teasing is dying down, and that if your child isn’t teased about his name, odds are he’ll be teased about something else anyway.
Would you use the name [name]Julian[/name] for a boy? Absolutely! It’s one of my favorite names!
(Maybe the better question is - would you ever use it for a girl or have you heard it used for a girl?) NEVER, and no.
Would you hesitate based on its similarity to the girl names? No, but if you’re worried, you could use the spelling I prefer, [name]Julien[/name].
Would you fear that he would be teased? No.
[name]Do[/name] you know of any boys named [name]Julian[/name] and whether they’ve teased about their name and/or have it mistaken as a girl’s name? I don’t know anyone named [name]Julian[/name], so I’m not sure.
Does it sound like a masculine boy’s name to you? 100%!
What nickname would you use for [name]Julian[/name]? Probably [name]Jules[/name].
[name]Do[/name] you know of many little Julians in your area and/or in general? No.
I wouldn’t personally use it, but that’s because it’s just NMS. I support it being used for a boy
I would not use it for a girl
No
No
I know one, but he’s a baby. As far as I know no one has mistaken it for a girls name.
It’s not the most masculine name, its on the softer side, but definitely still 100% a boys name
I probably would just stick with [name]Julian[/name] - I do think [name]Jules[/name] is somewhat feminine.
8)I know of 1 little [name]Julian[/name] ~1 year old
I love the name [name]Julian[/name] and would not hesitate to use it on a boy. It’s a boy’s name, and a well-established one at that. I don’t understand the hesitation. There were over 7,000 boys named [name]Julian[/name] born last year. I think your son would be just fine. If you want a nickname, [name]Jules[/name] or [name]Ian[/name] come to mind.
