Thoughts on Juniper

Pretty straight forward here: how do you feel about [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] on a little girl? Not currently expecting, just curious. It does hold some personal/family significance for me, but is not a family name. I’ve loved it for a long time, and I’m just wondering what everyone here thinks of it, feelings you get from it, and similar name suggestions (if you don’t like it). Thanks!

I like [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]. It’s all emerald green and springy to me. It’s a happy, bubbly name, but I think I like other [name_u]June[/name_u] names ([name_f]Juno[/name_f], [name_f]Junia[/name_f]) a bit better.

I like [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]. The plant is beautiful, lively and the name itself sounds so bright and spunky. [name_f]Juno[/name_f] can be a nice nickname.

Well, i love it obviously. My daughter [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] fits her name so well and we get a lot of compliments. We call her [name_f]Juni[/name_f] a lot of the time which is super-usable, but i love saying her full name.

I think it’s really cute.
I’d love to meet a little [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]. I think the nn’s like [name_u]June[/name_u] make it very usable as an adult name as well.

[name_u]Juniper[/name_u]…
I really want to get on the [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] bandwagon, she looks cool and has this very natural vibe. But I just can’t! Whenever I hear [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] I automatically think ‘Jew-nipper’, which isn’t great considering I’m from an interfaith family and one of the faith’s in my family is Judaism. Due to having a Jewish mother and me hearing Jew-nipper whenever I hear/see this name - it just isn’t a good look.

I completely adore [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]. It’s on my guilty pleasure list. I think it’s creative and spunky. I love when parents choose names that are a little bit outside the box. And to me, [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] is one of the most usable of that ilk.

Thanks for the replies! Anyone have any other suggestions? I’m trying to find something similar because my love affair with [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] has been a tumultuous romance; getting a lot of negative feedback from acquaintances now.

What part of it holds significance for you? The [name_u]June[/name_u] part? Trees? Nature?

The name [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] actually means [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] tree, so that might be a good option.

[name_f]Juno[/name_f], [name_f]Junia[/name_f] or just [name_u]June[/name_u] is lovely as well. You could do something like [name_f]Junia[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] and use [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] as a nn.

Other tree related names: [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Laurel[/name_f], [name_f]Willow[/name_f], [name_f]Olive[/name_f].

[name_u]Piper[/name_u] has a similar sound and is more common.

i love it. my daughter’s name is greta juniper. it’s earthy, unexpected and cool.

I see the appeal but don’t love it. It makes me think of gin and when I go to say it I stumble and say [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m] sometimes. But it is OK. I like the suggestion of [name_f]Junia[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f].

I strongly dislike it. It sounds like a cross between a planet and a vegetable. Also, it is not feminine or cute at all. Very much dislike the name. [name_m]Just[/name_m] being honest.

I want to like it, but I just kind of…don’t? I can’t pinpoint what bothers me about it. [name_u]Piper[/name_u] was an awesome suggestion!

[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t like it. To me it feels like an attempt to update the overused [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f]. Plus you have people who aren’t even naturey, outdoorsy types using it because it’s in style at the moment. They can feel like they’ve gone ‘out there’ but it’s safe because it’s been deemed stylish.

On a boy, I think it’s great. It’s unique and unexpected. On a girl, it’s no different than naming her [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] or [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]. It’s trendy

I love it, love [name_f]Juni[/name_f] for a nickname, and also love [name_f]Junia[/name_f] as an alternative!

@kala_way: [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] has a lot of good associations, the main ones being the huge tree in my grandmother’s yard and a family heirloom, a cedar chest, that was passed down to me ("[name_u]Red[/name_u] cedar" is a juniper tree that grows where I live, the chest was made from this). I also love the smell, love the color of the berries, love that [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] was the saint of comedy, etc. Thanks for the suggestions, I love [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] and [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]. [name_f]Olive[/name_f] is actually my grandmother’s name, so that’s been on the list for a while.

@banjodoo: [name_f]Greta[/name_f] [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] is so cute! [name_f]Greta[/name_f] has been on my shortlist for a while as well.

@nat108: I didn’t think you had to be an outdoorsy type to love nature names? I also didn’t realize it was that trendy - I don’t know any one who has ever been named [name_u]Juniper[/name_u], save for a couple of Nameberry babies and the movie [name_m]Benny[/name_m] & Joon, but I’ve met about a million Isabellas and at least three Emersons at work. Honestly I like the name for a boy or a girl, but it feels much more feminine to me, though most nature/noun names do. Any suggestions of not-trendy nature names?

I realize this discussion is at an end, however for those ‘googling’ [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] just wanted to add my thoughts.

We are expecting a baby in the spring my DH suggested [name_u]Juniper[/name_u], I wasn’t sure at first but the more research I did on the name the more I am falling in love with it. We also like the nickname [name_f]Juno[/name_f] which has a lovely meaning all on it’s own.

I found a quote about St.[name_u]Juniper[/name_u] (male) “Would to God, my brothers, I had a whole forest of such Junipers”. When I read this quote, I imagined a child with such a lovely spirit that people all around would wish there were a whole forest of them.

I also worried that the name was too unique for us. I have a son [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] and wanted the name to be as recognizable as his. I hear that [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] is on the rise and if it is then great and if it isn’t then that’s also fine too.

euffie, I am so glad someone else is considering [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]! I think the story about St. [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] is really lovely and part of the reason I like the name so much. Also, I am very partial to the name [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] and I think [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] and [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] sound great together.
