[name_u]Legend[/name_u] ranks at #132 on the SSA list this year with over 2.8k births; and at #118 last year with over 3.1k births. I’m still surprised about how popular it is because I’ve never met anyone IRL with the name and I’ve never seen anyone talk about the name here. So, what do y’all think of [name_u]Legend[/name_u] as a name?
it’s a no from me, it just feels quite corny, and as someone who was a super shy kid i would’ve hated to have a name like legend i generally dislike names that feel like they set expectations for children
I’m not a fan. I agree with @tallemaja that it feels like it sets an expectation for the child and could be a lot to feel like you have to live up to.
A bit too on the nose for me - and I also just don’t like the sounds tbh
Always the outlier, but I think it could be cool it reminds me more of [name_u]John[/name_u] [name_u]Legend[/name_u] than the word [name_u]Legend[/name_u]? So it’s a lot softer to me maybe? I do agree with the nameberry page that [name_m]King[/name_m], [name_u]Fable[/name_u], and [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] feel more usable tbh
It is not my style.
I’m not personally a fan of the trend of aspirational words as names (I do see this trend as being different than virtue names). [name_u]Legend[/name_u], [name_m]King[/name_m], [name_u]Messiah[/name_u], [name_u]Chosen[/name_u], [name_u]Legacy[/name_u], etc. I do recognize that in some cultures these are normal but I think in everyday American culture these are very heavy things to place on a child and also… just don’t really seem like “names” to me? I’m also not a fan of rising new-age noun names such as [name_u]Journey[/name_u], [name_u]Love[/name_u], [name_u]True[/name_u], etc. (although I can recognize that I’m kind of an old man shaking his fist at the cloud, “back in my day…!” and that times change) but these at least sound like they could be names to me. [name_u]Legend[/name_u] doesn’t.
Side note: my nephew has a Da’Legend in his class…
I think it could work as a middle name but not as a first name
I think it would quickly just feel like a regular name in use but feels too much like a character name or a pet name for me to ever consider. Also “the man, the myth, the legend” references would get old really fast. I do like [name_m]Ledger[/name_m] a bit which sounds very similar.
[name_f]My[/name_f] gut impression is that it sounds overly grandiose. I can’t imagine being named [name_u]Legend[/name_u]. I think it would seem very awkward on a shy, self-conscious person.
I’ve never heard of it as a name before. I wonder, is it more popular among certain cultures?
The sound and the vibe are awesome, but yes, I would personally feel awkward to have a name like that. And I was not even a shy kid. This name puts such a weight on a person.
Gosh… I’m just imagining myself with that name in my real life, and I’m getting goosebumps because of embarrassment (I’m working for the government, and it’s a very formal environment). I’m really sorry if I offended someone!!
I actually love [name_u]Legend[/name_u]! It’s definitely on my list of favourites, but can’t get my SO on board so will never be used here. I do think I would keep it in the middle name spot, it feels just a touch heavy as a first name.
I actually heard this name a lot when I was living in [name_u]Texas[/name_u]! And there were a few instances where a [name_u]Legend[/name_u] would have a sibling named [name_u]Legacy[/name_u].
I agree with most commenters about the name though. Not one I would choose because it does seem a little too much of a weight for a person to have. But I agree with @bemiranda that the name does also give [name_u]John[/name_u] [name_u]Legend[/name_u] vibes, which I bet his name has affected the popularity of the name! I also think it greatly affects its likeability and wearability.
