Thoughts on Leo and Arthur

Hi Berries,

I’ve been crushing on Leo and Arthur for a couple of weeks. These two names have a lot in common in my opinion. They’re both vintage, classy and international. They’re also nature names (meaning lion and bear). To sum it up, they tick a lot of boxes for me, and I like how they sound and look.

I’m curious to know what kind of child (or adult) you imagine when you think about each name. Hypothetic question: would they pair up nicely with my son’s name, Bastien, if I had other boys?

TIA!

These are two of my favourites. You could definitely have [name_m]Bastien[/name_m] and [name_u]Leo[/name_u] or [name_m]Bastien[/name_m] and [name_u]Arthur[/name_u], no problem. The little [name_m]Leos[/name_m] I’ve known have been particularly active, bouncy little boys and the Arthurs much more serious and quiet - funny how that’s worked out. So I’d imagine an adult [name_u]Leo[/name_u] as confident and sociable and an adult [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] as someone happiest at home with their family, although I don’t know any of either IRL.

[name_u]Leo[/name_u] is classic but also feels bright and youthful. I’ve met a couple of little [name_m]Leos[/name_m] and they’ve all been very friendly and smiley

[name_u]Arthur[/name_u] is charming - strong and classic with an edge of adventure. It’s a versatile name, I can imagine someone confident and active as well as someone quiet and studious.

I can imagine [name_u]Leo[/name_u] and [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] with [name_m]Bastien[/name_m]

[name_u]Arthur[/name_u] is a very strong name, associated with the mythical [name_m]King[/name_m] [name_u]Arthur[/name_u]. I could imagine a variety of personalities with his name, but I think they err on the bookish and reserved side. But [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] is also noble, honorable, and courageous.

[name_u]Leo[/name_u] is another similarly strong name just because of its association with lions. I am dear friends with a [name_u]Leo[/name_u] and he is gregarious, intelligent, kind, sociable, and goofy.

Thank you all for your comments! Your descriptions of [name_u]Leo[/name_u] and Arthur’s potential character matches what I have in mind. Funny how [name_u]Leo[/name_u] is pictured as more outgoing and energetic, while [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] is more calm and studious.

@EdgeOfTheMeadow: my first born is really active and social. If he had a little brother with a similar character, I could definitely picture him with the name [name_u]Leo[/name_u] If I had a second boy with a calmer nature, I could totally see the names [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] and [name_m]Mathias[/name_m] (another favorite of my husband and I, but for a longer time) for him.

They aren’t very common names in over here in US. Are u from uk?

I live in a [name_u]French[/name_u] speaking community in [name_f]Canada[/name_f]. Among the names my husband and I love for a boy, [name_u]Leo[/name_u], [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] and [name_m]Mathias[/name_m] are pretty common where we live. The name of our first born, [name_m]Bastien[/name_m], is not common however. Part of our family lives in [name_f]France[/name_f], and the four names are common there :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m curious about how these names would be perceived in the US

I mean they are cute names, I like them but they’ve neve been that popular in us but that shouldn’t stop you

[name_u]Leo[/name_u] is actually quite popular in the US – ranking 36 currently. [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] is less popular here – 162. Both are very cute though

i love both leo and arthur (arthur slightly more so). with leo, i tend to picture an active, outdoorsy kid, who loves science and nature. for arthur, i tend to picture a more reserved child, maybe a bit more studious and quiet. i’d say they pair up nicely with bastien! i think arthur and bastien works a little better than leo and bastien, perhaps because of the length difference.

Thanks again for your answers Berries!

@Jennifermassen88 I was curious about how these names would be perceived in the US, but popular or not, I would have kept them on my shortlist

@e.christine.g thanks for the rankings!

@coupletoutofrhyme I get what you mean about length. Both names are two syllables however, just like [name_m]Bastien[/name_m].
