Thoughts on Letter Names - AJ, SJ, JJ, etc

I want to hear some opinions about using initials as nicknames on. I think its really cute but worry that it isn’t unique enough and takes away the significance of the actual name that was given.

Some of my favorite options:

[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] - SJ

[name_m]Andrew[/name_m] [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] - AJ

[name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Paul[/name_m] - JP

I think initial nicknames are adorable and much more unique then when the name is just shortened.

I’m not a huge fan, honestly. AJ and DJ feel overdone, I absolutely cannot stand PJ for some reason…SJ feels fresh…I guess it just depends on the initials.

I like it, in general. with the odd exception of [name_m]JR[/name_m], because it makes me think of junior and if they’re not a junior it just seems odd. My husband wanted a [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Russell[/name_m] called [name_m]JR[/name_m]. If it had been any other initial nickname I probably could have been swayed but [name_m]JR[/name_m] just drives me nuts for some reason… Also BJ, for obvious reasons, is not ok.

I also think it’s a nice way to liven up some common names like you say [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] [name_m]Joseph[/name_m], instead of another [name_u]Andy[/name_u], he’s AJ. Some I like more than others, probably those less common ones. JP and JJ are fun. My husband was wishing he had been known as JP, instead of the 5th [name_m]Jason[/name_m] in his class, but it just never worked out that way.

I don’t really have any thoughts on the matter. I would never judge someone to be unoriginal for choosing to go by AJ.

I think AJ and JJ are really cute. Esp. JJ for a little boy.

I’m very fond of AJ. It adds a lot of flexibility to many A names I like - [name_u]August[/name_u], [name_u]Aidan[/name_u], [name_u]Ari[/name_u], [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], [name_m]Alan[/name_m] don’t have other nicknames I like.

I’m not particularly fond of [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] but I certainly think AJ is at least as usable as [name_u]Andy[/name_u].

I’ve known like four JP’s in two countries, all of whom were [name_m]John[/name_m] Pauls, it’s not a very odd thing to do. It’s not a name I would use (I’m not Catholic) but it’s entirely pleasant. Personally, my only issue here is I don’t mind [name_m]Johnny[/name_m]/[name_m]Jack[/name_m] as NNs for [name_m]John[/name_m]. But I’m a [name_m]Johnny[/name_m] [name_m]Cash[/name_m] fan. JP for something like [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] [name_m]Philip[/name_m] would be highly unexpected.

Not listed, but I like EJ and JJ. I’m fond of [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] [name_m]Joel[/name_m] and a number of JJ combos.

I like it in theory, although I think AJ, CJ, and TJ are the only options that sound really good. And because of that, those ones are overused.
