I may be biased - the name is my middle name and my grandmother’s - but I am quite fond of the name. I love the nicknames [name_f]Lori[/name_f] and [name_f]Raina[/name_f].
I do like it…it’s a little grown up I think but she won’t always be a little girl. Plus you get the SUPER cute nn’s [name_u]Lorrie[/name_u], [name_f]Lorra[/name_f] and [name_f]Raine[/name_f] or even [name_f]Raina[/name_f]. It’s an adorable name now that I think of all these cute nn’s lol…and I don’t think it’s that old, no where near as aged as I think [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] or [name_f]Fannie[/name_f] are.
@ fruitfulvine - there may be various origins for [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f], but the most common seems to be that it’s after the place, which in turn took its name from [name_m]King[/name_m] [name_m]Lothar[/name_m], whose name came from Germanic words for “famous” and “army.” Perhaps you could focus on that derivation - that sadness and depression can be due to forces beyond our control, whether life circumstances or brain chemistry, but your daughter is able to summon strength in the face of it? With a first name meaning noble and a middle meaning “famous army,” her name can be a shield against the things she has to fight.
OP - [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] is pretty and strong. It sounds less dated with a nickname like [name_f]Lainey[/name_f], [name_u]Rain[/name_u], [name_f]Rainie[/name_f], or [name_f]Lola[/name_f] instead of [name_u]Lorrie[/name_u]. I’d put it in the “totally usable” category.
[name_f]Lola[/name_f] would be really cute.
For [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] you could also consider Loreley -> generally in german the figure is referred to as the [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] or the Loreley - I have not come across the [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f] spelling in connection to the mythical figure. (Though the [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f] spelling was used in [name_m]Gilmore[/name_m] Girls).
I’m afraid it sounds dated to my ears.
[name_f]My[/name_f] mother’s name is [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] (she’s in her fifties) and I plan on using it as a middle someday. She went by [name_u]Rainy[/name_u]/[name_u]Rain[/name_u] as a kid, but mostly goes by the full name now with everyone, except my Dad who calls her [name_f]Lolly[/name_f], which I think is super cute! I think it would quite refreshing to meet a little [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f], and [name_u]Rain[/name_u]/[name_u]Rainy[/name_u], [name_f]Lori[/name_f] and [name_f]Lainey[/name_f] are really cute, modern nicknames! x
@rknd Thanks for the input Though I prefer the English version all feedback is good feedback.
@tararyaz I am glad you like the name. I always thought [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] seemed like a proper, respectable name that had a nice ring to it. You’re right as well in saying that this name has many nicknames that make it kid friendly. I don’t hear the harshness in this name, but I have other names on my list that have a “harsh” sound to it, so I was wondering if it was just me?
@tfzolghadr [name_f]Glad[/name_f] I’m not alone in my love of this name. It really is beautiful.
@rainierloner I must say, I also love you and your grandmothers middle name [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] really is a beauty.
@aza Thank you for the feedback. The popularity level had me wondering whether the name is dated or not as I do not hear this name as dated. I love all the nicknames for this name.
@isolieth That’s a beautiful defense you wrote about the name and I do love the meaning of “famous army”. I agree that [name_u]Lorrie[/name_u] is an unusable nickname, I much prefer [name_f]Lola[/name_f] but I do like [name_f]Lainey[/name_f] and [name_u]Rain[/name_u] or [name_f]Rainie[/name_f] so it would depend on which nickname she prefers.
@lexiem I loved [name_m]Gilmore[/name_m] Girls as a teenager so that is where I first heard the name. I’d probably use the [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] spelling as I thought that was the "proper"one, so it is food for thought that Loreley is also a legitimate spelling. It would depend on what my SO prefers or what name suits her better when she is born. I appreciate the feedback.
@maggiemay That is what I was worried about
@psg007 I must say your mother has a lovely name. [name_f]Lolly[/name_f] is an adorable nickname. I loved all the nickname suggestions before but [name_f]Lolly[/name_f] would be adorable on a little kid.
I love [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f]! It’s close to my name, so it will be a middle for a future daughter.
Honestly, it feels dated to me. I imagine a lady in her 50s or 60s when I hear the name.
I like it. I think it’s feminine. [name_f]My[/name_f] first thought is [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] [name_m]Warren[/name_m], which I guess some people would consider a bad association, but I doubt most people would think of that first. I only think of it because I’m into paranormal stories and stuff like that.
I think the name is beautiful & ready for a revival!
I love it. [name_f]My[/name_f] name is a different spelling variation of [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f]. I am named after my grandmother who also had a different spelling but was pronounced the name. I definitely think [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] is ready for a comeback.
@laury Sounds like you have a lovely name. I’m also glad to hear that your daughter will have a beautiful middle name.
@southern_maple That is what I was worried about when I saw the popularity charts
@heytherepigeon [name_f]Glad[/name_f] you like the name I had no idea who she was til I googled the name… If you’re into the paranormal I guess that may be a good association?
@lainy I must say you have a lovely first name. I really always had a soft spot for [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f]. It may not be on the top of my list but it is still there after almost a decade of liking the name.
It still feels dated to me, similar to [name_f]Deborah[/name_f], [name_f]Kathleen[/name_f], [name_f]Judith[/name_f], and [name_f]Cheryl[/name_f] (and not [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], etc.). They’re all dated and not quite ready for a comeback. That said, it’s a name that I still wouldn’t mind hearing on a little girl. An upside is that it has some “fresh sounding” nicknames, like [name_f]Raine[/name_f]/[name_f]Rainey[/name_f], [name_f]Lola[/name_f], etc.
@casilda I appreciate the feedback. It is undeniably dated but it is a name I love and like you said nicknames like [name_u]Rain[/name_u] and [name_f]Lola[/name_f] are on trend. I’m happy to hear that you won’t mind meeting a little [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] as it is definitely on my list.
I love it. It does have a vintage feel while still being pretty.
@ashleyf Thank you I love it as well.
