Thoughts on Lorraine?

I always really liked this name but it hasn’t been in the top 1000 for quite sometime so I was wondering if it maybe had a connotation of being old lady-ish or too dated? To me it seems a bit classic, but I wonder if I was wrong in the respect.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] looking for some honest opinions.
Thank you to all those who take the time to respond

[name_u]Love[/name_u] it. A great choice during the age of vintage name revivals.

I like it and I think it’s ready for comeback.

It’s certainly not terrible but for me it’s a little harsh sounding. If you like it I would go ahead and use it.

I agree with bethashley that it does have a harsher sound to it, but if you love it then I don’t see why it wouldn’t work today – plenty of classic names are coming back very strong. This one probably won’t make a huge comeback, making it more unique (which is a plus in my mind). I only know a few Lorraines and all go by [name_f]Lori[/name_f]. Two are in the early 60s and one is in her early 40s.

I love [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] and I think [name_f]Lainey[/name_f] could be a very sweet, cute nickname for it

I like [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] a lot. It makes me think of [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] Hansberry (A Raisin in the [name_f]Sun[/name_f]). I also like [name_f]Lorena[/name_f], [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f], [name_f]Loretta[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Etta[/name_f]).

Another thought would be [name_f]Elaine[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] grandpa’s second wife was named [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] and she was stunning!

I think [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] is darling. I love [name_f]Loretta[/name_f] (my FI doesn’t like the nn [name_f]Etta[/name_f] so sad.) which I feel like has that same vintagey feel. I’d say go for it - its due for a revival.

I think with [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] nn [name_u]Rain[/name_u] would be a great way to update the name and give it a little bit of a modern edge. (Instead of the more obvious Laur nn).

It strikes me as dated. I picture someone in their 60s. I don’t think it is a bad name but I doubt it will be making a comeback anytime soon.

Ok, personal experience with this one. It is my mom’s given middle, and we chose it as our 2nd dd’s middle as well - [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f]. I love the sound of it. [name_f]My[/name_f] daughter, when we told her her middle name, after she was sort of old enough to understand it, waited two beats and said “I’m a reindeer!” It’s definitely a lovely, vintagey name. [name_f]My[/name_f] only problem is with the meaning - “sorrowful.” I have since come across the Jewish understanding that parents have a temporary gift of prophecy imparted when naming a child, that gives a glimpse of the character that will be developed in the future, and for my money, both my mom and daughter have generally overly sad, negative outlooks on life. We spent much of last summer and fall dealing with my daughter’s bout with depression (she is 11, so it is sort of expected, right?) and the thought that I had done this to her by giving her that name was haunting. Obviously, this will sound weird and “out there” to some, but since you asked about this name in particular, had to share my experience with it. There are some alternate meanings out there (one is “of [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f],” a region in [name_f]France[/name_f]) so maybe you can fudge if you really want to use it. Btw, the same meaning goes for [name_f]Lorna[/name_f] and some other similar ones.

doctorjones89- Thanks for your support!

polina- [name_f]Glad[/name_f] you think it’s time for a comeback

bethashley- I understand what you are saying. I also love [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] but find it to be harsh sounding. I still like it though. I appreciate any honest feedback

aym- I actually went to highschool with a [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] (who had an alternate spelling of the name) and had a teacher with the name. I like unique names as well so it is a plus for me, and yes I am okay with the harsh sound. Thank you for the feedback
I’m also more of a fan of [name_f]Elena[/name_f], but I appreciate the suggestion.

lawsonhaley- [name_f]Glad[/name_f] you like it  [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] has been growing on me and I know that is a favorite name of yours. [name_f]Lainey[/name_f] is actually a perfect nickname now that you mention it!, but I was thinking maybe [name_f]Lola[/name_f]? Something cutesy to offset the harshness of [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f], which thankfully both these nicknames are.

lexiem- [name_f]Glad[/name_f] you like it. I’m also a fan of [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] (or [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f], I prefer the ‘a’ spelling but I like proper spellings so that is a bit of a conundrum). [name_f]Loretta[/name_f] is also a lovely name. I’m thinking I may go with [name_f]Lola[/name_f] as a nickname, it is cutesy and currently popular so it may add a bit of spunk to the name. [name_f]Lola[/name_f] makes more sense as a nn for [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]/[name_f]Lorelai[/name_f] though.

ajh- That is what I was worried about. I don’t mind if it isn’t ‘in’ style, but I’m worried it may be an old lady-ish name.

fruitfulwinewife- I do understand what you are saying. Honestly, I would wait to get to know my baby for a few weeks before deciding on a name. I’d have my list and whichever one fits my kid best I would use. Thanks for advice, I had no idea it meant “sorrowful” which I am not too fond of. I understand the concern about not wanting to give your kid a bad namesake.
I honestly just thought it was a place name in [name_f]France[/name_f] as [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] is a region in [name_f]France[/name_f]. A few other websites like Sheknows said it means “sea gull” in Latin and “made famous in battle” in [name_m]German[/name_m], so I was unaware of that.

I think its really pretty & underused . Names like [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] , [name_f]Edith[/name_f] etc are coming back so why not [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] ? Some nn that i like are [name_u]Rain[/name_u]/[name_f]Raine[/name_f] , [name_u]Rory[/name_u] , [name_u]Rae[/name_u] etc .

I don’t think it’s dated, but I can honestly only think of a quiche lorraine.

I like the name [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] but I do have an image of a woman who is like an uncut diamond - a little rough around the edges. She’s had a life full of hard knocks and doesn’t take any prisoners. I have the same kind of vibe with [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f]'s cousins [name_f]Roxanne[/name_f], [name_f]Nadine[/name_f] and [name_f]Maxine[/name_f] too. I still like the names but they’re not everyone’s cup of tea. [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] is a solid and comfortable name with a no-frills, understated style. She may not be the life of the party but she’s built to last.

I’m not a fan, I think it’s really dated and harsh sounding. It’s not flattering, or feminine for that matter. [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] is my favorite variant, which instantly gives it a face-lift and freshens it up a bit.

I like it. It reminds me of [name_f]Lea[/name_f] [name_m]Thompson[/name_m] in Back to the [name_u]Future[/name_u].

@bellerose [name_f]Glad[/name_f] you like it  I hope it isn’t too old fashioned.

@kate_elaine I like both [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f]/[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] and [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f]. [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] just has an extra something special though (for me).

@mischa I do appreciate the honest imagery very much. I get that uncut diamond picture with [name_f]Roxanne[/name_f] but not with [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f]… so I do appreciate the commentary.

@bonfireazalea ahhh yes quiche lorraine :frowning: great, great point.

@sablonde [name_f]Glad[/name_f] you like it :slight_smile:

I love the [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation (Laur-ENNE), but the English version sounds dated to me.

[name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] is a great choice. I don’t find it harsh at all. L names are lovely & lyrical to me. [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] has strength for sure. It’s a name that commands some respect, maybe some find that harsh. I think [name_f]Lainey[/name_f] or [name_u]Rain[/name_u] or [name_f]Raina[/name_f] make it more kid friendly, but [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] is great.
