Thoughts on Lumi?

Wondering what people’s thoughts are on Lumi (Loo-me) as a girls name (am in Australia)?

Lumi is Finnish for ‘[name_f]Snow[/name_f]’ and is a well recognised if not common name in Finland. It also translates to [name_u]River[/name_u] in Albanian.

Unfortunately do not like any of the longer names that Lumi is suggested as a nickname for, [name_f]Lumina[/name_f] etc

Would this be easy to pronounce and spell for you? Does it make you think of anything in particular?

I like it! It does rhyme with “gloomy” but that’s a minor thing.

Easy to pronounce and spell. I think Lumi sounds like a stand-alone name as well.

I love Lumi! Short and sweet, great meaning(s), and I think relatively straight forward pronunciation and spelling. And I think it definitely looks /sounds like a full name and less like a nickname.

I like it! Short, sweet and it definitely works as a stand alone name

I think it’s so sweet! It definitely works as a standalone too. I love Finnish names.

What about Pilvi which is Finnish for ‘[name_u]Cloud[/name_u]’? I actually have a relative (in Finland of course) with this name, and she is now an adult and although it’s not a super common name over there, she has managed just fine. In fact, I think it suits her. I mean if people can name their kids, [name_u]Sky[/name_u] and [name_u]Storm[/name_u] surely [name_u]Cloud[/name_u] is acceptable too?

In Finland the letter P is pronounced as B sound, so(assuming you are outside of Finland/Scandinavia) it would be a name which is unheard of, particularly if you pronounce it phonetically with the P sound at the beginning. I quite like it.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] thought I’d throw it out there.

Lumi is okay too, but I instantly think of ‘Luminous’ or ‘Illuminati’…not sure why, but I do. I think Pilvi is slightly more edgy but also quite sweet sounding. Fits in with the [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]'s and [name_f]Pippa[/name_f]'s of this world.

Thanks for the feedback, think it’s helped me to fall in love with the name!

Pp, interesting suggestion thanks, not really keen on Pilvi though. Not quite liking the sound but do appreciate it as a unusual name.

I think one of the reasons I like Lumi is that it reminds me of Luminous, which has positive connotations from my end!

I love it- short, strong and sweet. It would age beautifully and has a lovely elegant simplicity, rather than cutesy factor. Stunning, in my opinion.

I do like it, but because I knew what it meant and the origins. As someone hearing the name who didn’t know, it might be a bit close to ‘looming’, and the ‘ie’ sound ending might sound nicknamey. So I would use it as a middle name, personally.

I love Lumi! I think it has a certain whimsy to it that is almost irresistible. I also find it easy to say and spell. It combines some well-known trends ([name_f]Lila[/name_f]/[name_f]Lily[/name_f] and [name_f]Demi[/name_f]/[name_f]Suri[/name_f]) to create a fresher sound similar to the more recognizable [name_f]Luna[/name_f].

It has completely positive connotations for me. My first thought upon reading it was of Lumiere from Beauty & the Beast, which is cute. It also reminds me of [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] (Lumos Nox).

I’m from Finland and it’s not an unusual name here. The pronunciation is not actually “loomie” but for an non-Finnish speaker “loomie” is the closest to the correct one. I think it’s a very pretty name and works well in other countries as well since it is not difficult to spell.

I personally love Ilta , which means evening in Finnish and it is also easier to spell and pronounce

Thanks all, have been received better than I had expected which is great

Any other thoughts?

My 2 year old neighbor is Lumi [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] and I adore her name

Kind of cute!

I really like it!

I like it! I think it’s both feminine and solid. The only association it had for me was Lumiere from Beauty and the Beast

I really like it, a lot! Wow! I’d never heard it before.

It reminds me of the Illuminati right off the bat, but it seems only a few people do from the comments.

Also, it seems more like a pet name than a given name [eg my DH goes by [name_m]Cap/name_m with his buddies even though he was born an entirely different name.]

[name_m]Just[/name_m] my two cents
