I was talking with OH about names after making him watch SJ Strum birth announcement video (latest video) and there was one announcement about a [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] being born. I said that liked [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] (thinking he wouldn’t as someone who hates most names especially old fashioned) and he said he did shock. Anyways He said it combines two family names from my side [name_f]Mary[/name_f] & [name_f]Ann[/name_f] feels similar to [name_f]Maureen[/name_f] & [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] from his and if we were to have another girl that should be one of the options. I do like [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] & have it on my list (Marianne [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] Frances) I never saw it as an actual consideration for an actual child so now I’m coming to you guys to see what your thoughts are on [name_f]Marianne[/name_f]? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_f]Marianne[/name_f]? Also does [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] & [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] work together as sisters?
Lilia and Marianne sound wonderful together! I personally prefer Marion or Marian, because they’re a bit shorter to spell and a pit more modern to say, I think. Also have always loved Maid Marian from Robin Hood, so I’m sure that sways me a bit.
I love [name_f]Marianne[/name_f]! I think it’s absolutely stunning, and the added meaning for you makes it really special. I really like [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] with [name_f]Lilia[/name_f]!
[name_f]Marianne[/name_f] is genuinely my favourite name for a girl. I think sisters [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] are great together! Similar vibes and both 3 syllables but definitely not matchy.
To be honest, I like it in writing, it looks beautiful and sophisticated, but find the sound combined with the spelling somewhat clunky? I do think they work as sister names, though, they just feel slightly different to me.
Such a lovely name! It’s classic and traditional but feels fresh and pretty! As another user mentioned, I much prefer the spelling “Marion/Marian” so it isn’t pronounced as two separate names, like “Mary Anne”. And I love the sister combination of [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Marianne[/name_f]. [name_f]Beautiful[/name_f] choices!
I think [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] could be very cute on a little girl. Personally, I really like the sound, but I associate it with serious older women and find it a bit strange on women my age. I would still say use it on a baby though because, happily, it won’t sound like such an old name to her generation! [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f] is gooorrgeous, but it did instantly make me think of [name_f]Marianne[/name_f], the national personification of [name_f]France[/name_f].
I love it! I immediately think of Sense and Sensibility by [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u], so this particular spelling is my favorite. [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] are gorgeous together!
@snowmaiden thank you for responding and providing alternative spellings I’m now confused as to which one is my favourite!
@starless thank you for responding I like the family connection as well
@EdgeOfTheMeadow thank you it’s lovely to hear from a [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] lovely and thank you for the positivity surrounding [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] & [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] as sisters
@OpheliaFlora thank you for your honesty I do understand the clunky vibe I thought it could be seen as clunky cool like [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]? Completely agree about as [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] sister the name not 100% working
I suppose it feels a little more retro to me than [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f], which has a bit more of a Victorian vibe.
However, I have thought about the name for a bit after replying here and came to the conclusion that I can’t see [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] on a young child but can see it on an adult. And, as there are enough nicknames for [name_f]Marianne[/name_f], I do think it can work on any kind of person, even if the full name might not (I, for example, would not be a [name_f]Marianne[/name_f], but I could be a [name_f]Mary[/name_f] or [name_f]Anna[/name_f], others may choose [name_f]Ria[/name_f], [name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_f]Annie[/name_f], [name_u]Maria[/name_u], [name_u]Aria[/name_u], [name_u]Marie[/name_u], [name_f]Mimi[/name_f], etc. - I think everyone will find something to suit them).
As a full name I do find [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] a little more versatile, it feels a little fresher and quirkier on its own, more energetic really. However, as we’ve just established (and because I feel like [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] automatically leads to a nickname anyway - at least an occasional one), [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] could be all of those things as well, therefore I do like them as sisters.
A very sunny pair.
I love [name_f]Marianne[/name_f], so elegant. It sounds like such a familiar name yet I’ve never actually met anyone called this and the only association I have is with a teenage / early 20s character in the book “normal people”. I think it works with [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] and sounds like it would be perfect for your family.
@futuremama thank you for responding and being so positive I agree I think [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] & [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] are a bit mismatched but i kinda like it
@thelittlefleet ah thank you so much for responding your positivity is a appreciated and I understand your feedback in relation to spelling anyways thank you for saying both [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] & [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] are beautiful
@liberty.mairead thank you for your feedback! [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think the overall name is too french for a child with no french heritage? [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] reflects her heritage perfectly (she’s Ashkenazi Jewish, Celtic & black Ugandan) and I love that it suits her heritage do you think [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] is universal enough to reflect that cultural background?
@Renee5322 thank you & ditto I love the literacy connection
As for Marion vs Marian vs Marianne spelling to help you choose a fave… I pronounce them differently! Marion and Marian to me are “MAIR-ee-un,” whereas I’d say Marianne as “Merry-ANNE” like Mary and Anne smashed up.
