I feel in such a pickle, because the name [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is growing on me, despite the fact that I used to hate it. I’m oddly trapped between its connotations of beauty and “grandmother,” but I can’t quite get past how plain it sounds in the twenty-first century.
What is everyone’s opinion? I could especially use British opinions, but I’d like to hear what anyone has to say. Is it usable?
I adore the name [name_f]Mary[/name_f]! It’s simple and that’s one of the things I love about it. I can easily see it on a woman of any age.
I view [name_f]Mary[/name_f] as a very classic choice, not old. I find that classic names are very popular in the UK and I have come across a little [name_f]Mary[/name_f] (and [name_f]Anne[/name_f], [name_f]Phillipa[/name_f] etc). But I understand what you mean about the name lacking something in this day and age of [name_f]Zoe[/name_f]'s and [name_u]Marley[/name_u]'s and other more modern sounding names.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with a classic name. But if you’re in doubt perhaps you should consider some variants on [name_f]Mary[/name_f] such as [name_f]Marianne[/name_f], [name_f]Maura[/name_f] or [name_f]Maren[/name_f].
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] is, I believe, one of those classic names who are currently underused. It’s hard to find a [name_f]Mary[/name_f] these days, [name_f]Maria[/name_f]'s sure, because of the Italian and Latino communities, mainly, but certainly not [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. I find it to be a name that has also grown on me. I used to perceive it as boring or dull, but in reality it’s a very versatile, international, recognizable name and in popularity perfect, because it’s not high up on the list, but it’s also a name that everyone recognizes and can spell with no complications. [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is more soft and gentle sounding (pure) than [name_f]Maria[/name_f], which TBH is my favorite, but in the XXI century, it would be a lovely surprise.
I went through exactly the same thing with [name_f]Mary[/name_f]; used to hate it, thought it was boring and frumpy, and then suddenly realised how classic and pretty it is. In the UK I agree it is generally seen as an older name, although I know at least two teenage [name_f]Marys[/name_f] and I was surprised at how well they wear the name. It actually strikes me as sweet and refreshing on them, while definitely fitting in with their peers’ names. If it helps, I’ve never heard anyone comment on their name being odd or plain for their age or anything like that. There are also a lot of great nn options with [name_f]Mary[/name_f] ([name_f]Mamie[/name_f] - my favourite, [name_f]Molly[/name_f], [name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] etc.) that could help to liven the name up a bit.
I love [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. I know 4 (only one a grandma) and they are all wonderful people. [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is a timeless classic!
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] is a timeless option. It’s also growing on me. You’ll find [name_f]Mary[/name_f]'s of all ages unlike with other names that were popular only on a particular period of time. I think it’s classy, regal, pretty and has a nice ring when you say it out loud.
If you think [name_f]Mary[/name_f] it’s too plain, you can always choose a more spunky middle name. One of the wonderful things of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is that it’s going to sound good with almost every middle name.
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] is my first name, and I love it. I go by [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f], and I get lots of compliments on my name from people of all ages. I’ve met a few little [name_f]Marys[/name_f] in recent years, so yes, the name is still in use. [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is definitely a name that needs to be reconsidered, and it bugs me that [name_f]Pam[/name_f] and [name_f]Linda[/name_f] insist that it is no longer stylish.
I detest it, but then I was abused by one for 20 yrs. I do love [name_f]Marie[/name_f]-(insert any lovely [name_m]French[/name_m] name).
I’ve had a complex relationship with the name [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. I used to dislike it, but then I came to appreciate its simple elegance and timelessness. [name_f]Mary[/name_f] feels like a breath of fresh air at this point in time. I know a lot of girls with [name_f]Mary[/name_f] in a double name, but not nearly enough girls who are just [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. I love it now.
I think [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is beautiful, regardless of how “plain” it may be. I put it in the same boat as [name_f]Jane[/name_f], which I love. I feel like the more popular it becomes to have an interesting name, the more refreshing names like [name_f]Mary[/name_f] become.
A pretty name with many worthy namesakes
My grandmother’s name was [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and I absolutely adore it. I find it to be so classic and timeless.
