Thoughts on name Celyn vs Harriet for baby girl?

[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] for the win! Fun, underused, but recognizable name that goes great with your other daughters’ names, and an [name_f]El[/name_f]- middle to continue the pattern.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

[name_f]Isla[/name_f] & [name_f]Maren[/name_f] are so lovely! This is a tricky one. You seem to love [name_m]Celyn[/name_m] & I like the uniqueness of it. Then again, you don’t meet too many little Harriet’s in 2024, so it’s not like that’s common either. [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] just seems, for lack of a better word, easier. I’m a name nerd & at first glance I thought [name_m]Celyn[/name_m] was ‘sell-in’. You could spell it [name_m]Kellen[/name_m], but that’s not nearly as pretty. [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is adorable & charming & goes great with [name_f]Isla[/name_f] & [name_f]Maren[/name_f]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like the nn [name_f]Hattie[/name_f]? That’s my favorite part of [name_f]Harriet[/name_f].

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.

This is a tricky one! Adding to the tricky factor for me is that my daughter was Harriet in utero and we don’t didn’t use because her last name starts with T and the names ran into each other and tripped me up. And my daughter’s first middle name is Frances. (And I really don’t like Ellie so I’m with you in preferring Nora - I also really love Nell. But this isn’t especially important if Eleanor is in second spot).

I think Celyn goes more visually with Isla & Maren. I think it’s slightly awkward to say Maren & Celyn, however, one after the other. They will rarely introduce themselves and their siblings together so that’s not a deal breaker but it’s adding to my preference for Harriet. Also adding are the nickname options - with an El middle especially you can use Hallie (a legit Harriet nn), Hattie/Hatts, Hetty or Etta in addition to Harriet itself. I prefer these to the nn’s Celly/Kellie or Lynnie for eg.

Just checking out Harriet with some other El names, to see if there are any better rhythms than Harriet Eleanor:

Harriet Elaina, Harriet Elvira, Harriet Elaine sound pretty to me. Not sure if prettier though…

Otherwise Harriet Celyn which has an El in there, and I think would thematically go really nicely with the other two.

Wildcards: Elspeth Harriet or Elspeth Frances (I know you have Elizabeth but this would be such a gorgeous trio: Isla, Maren & Elspeth). Scarlett (nn Lettie or Lottie) and Frances (Franny) would also be beautiful. Otherwise, water/sea related girl names: Pearl, Gwenora, Brooke, Serena, Riviera, Coralie, or any of the star (navigation) names eg Celeste would all work (Celeste is a sort of mash of the two front runner names, Harriet and Celyn).

Hope this helps!

(Btw, Maisie would be a pretty nn for Maren El0ise - not sure if you already use?!)

Thank you so much for your feedback! Yes I do like [name_m]Celyn[/name_m]! And [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] too but for different reasons. That’s the tricky part about [name_m]Celyn[/name_m] - is how it may be pronounced (aka Sell-in or [name_f]Celine[/name_f] even)…The [name_m]Celyn[/name_m] spelling is welsh and means [name_f]Holly[/name_f] which is meaningful to our family so I think I would keep that spelling, but I agree with the trickiness of it. [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] is cute and unique in 2024, i agree! I don’t immediately love [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] to be honest but it may grow on me? I do like Hen/Hennie as a pet name though. [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is so cute!

Thank you! I think it’s such a nice name too :)!

I like [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] best with your girls, followed closely by [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]! I think [name_f]Isla[/name_f], [name_f]Maren[/name_f], and [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] are a great trio, and [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] is an adorable nn (there are other really nice ones if you don’t like [name_f]Hattie[/name_f], though!). [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is lovely. I’m a huge [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] fan and I think [name_f]Isla[/name_f], [name_f]Maren[/name_f], and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] make a great trio as well, though.

I like Celyn’s meaning but prefer it for a boy, unfortunately. Plus, I don’t love how similar [name_f]Maren[/name_f] and [name_m]Celyn[/name_m] sound? I do think [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Fern[/name_f] or [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Olive[/name_f] are really sweet as well, though, and if you do go the [name_m]Celyn[/name_m] route, I do like [name_m]Celyn[/name_m] [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_m]Celyn[/name_m] [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], and [name_m]Celyn[/name_m] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] a lot.

Good luck!

Thank you for the thoughtful feedback! Interesting you decided against [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] for last name reasons - We really liked [name_f]Frances[/name_f] but the “S” at the end runs into our last name which has two S sounds in it (name with S sounds like Sampsen). I love the name [name_f]Frances[/name_f]! [name_f]Frances[/name_f] Sampsen (not our actual last name) seems like a mouthful of S sounds though. Yes I like the nn of [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] - more Hennie/Hen or [name_f]Hetty[/name_f] I think rather than [name_f]Hattie[/name_f]. I really love the meaning of [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] which is why I think we would go with it if we decide to stick with an E name like the other girls. [name_f]My[/name_f] son has a D middle name so I don’t want to leave him out of the E names…but I don’t actually think he will care either. Yes [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_m]Celyn[/name_m] sounds nice too, I agree :)!
[name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] is a name I really like and my husband loves (he is Scottish) but initally we took it off the list because [name_f]Isla[/name_f] already has [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] as a middle.
I really loved [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] as a sea/land inspired name also but it has a negative family connection unfortunately! [name_f]My[/name_f] son also has a nature inspired name which means “rock” so I like your nature name idea - I also have liked [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_f]Eilidh[/name_f], [name_f]Fern[/name_f] and [name_f]Lilian[/name_f] but they have been taken off the list for different reasons.

Thank you for your feedback! I do love [name_m]Celyn[/name_m] [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] too (also any of the [name_m]Celyn[/name_m] one’s you said!). Our son if he was a girl would have likely been [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_m]Celyn[/name_m] at the time
