Dislaimer: Sorry to all who may have responded to my earlier thread last week about names for a sibling for [name_m]Konrad[/name_m]! Somehow it got deleted (maybe among all of the spam the [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Names Forum has had recently.) I emailed the mods but no one has answered me yet so I’m NOT being rude and not responding, I just can’t!
Anyway, [name_m]Konrad[/name_m] is going to have a little sibling in [name_u]March[/name_u]! [name_u]Ever[/name_u] since he was born my husband and I have said that [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] was going to be our next boy’s name. However, DH has gone all wishy-washy on my and has decided he doesn’t like [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] anymore. He has declared his new favorite is [name_m]Otto[/name_m]. It has a lot of the same sounds as [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] but I’m not completely sold on it. So, what do you think about [name_m]Otto[/name_m]? Middle name would be [name_m]John[/name_m] or [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] or even [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] (out fathers’ names).
Other names he likes are: (they usually have a very [name_m]German[/name_m] or “badass” feel - his words not mine!)
[name_u]Arlo[/name_u]
[name_m]Oskar[/name_m]
[name_m]Kasper[/name_m]
[name_m]Soren[/name_m]
I really like [name_m]Otto[/name_m]. Especially with [name_m]Konrad[/name_m]. Both are underused, though slowly entering the mainstream. I wouldn’t use [name_m]Otto[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m], just because it sounds like Autobahn to me. But [name_m]Otto[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] is great.
Unfortunately, I know more girl Arlos than boys (2 to 1.)
I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Oskar[/name_m]! [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] might be too popular for you though, it’s in the low 100s whereas [name_m]Conrad[/name_m] is up in the 600s.
[name_m]Kasper[/name_m] and [name_m]Konrad[/name_m] is too Kardashian to me, but I like [name_m]Caspar[/name_m] instead.
[name_m]Soren[/name_m] is great. Another underused name coming to the mainstream. The little [name_m]Soren[/name_m] I know is indeed a badass with a heart of gold.
I like [name_m]Otto[/name_m] - I think it is a very strong sounding (badass ) name without going [name_m]Maverick[/name_m]/[name_m]Wrecker[/name_m]. Plus I have a soft spot for palindrome names and think [name_m]Otto[/name_m] and [name_m]Konrad[/name_m] match well. I also really like [name_m]Oskar[/name_m] with the matching “K” with [name_m]Konrad[/name_m].
[name_m]Otto[/name_m] is awesome. I’ve only heard it on old [name_m]German[/name_m] men, so I have a bit of a hard time picturing it on a baby BUT I think it could be done. I also love [name_m]Soren[/name_m] from his list. The one concern I have with [name_m]Soren[/name_m] is the nicknaming possibilities - Sorry, Sore, [name_u]Ren[/name_u]? It doesn’t need a nickname, but friends and family might inevitably try to create one.
I’m not a huge fan of [name_m]Otto[/name_m] (though [name_u]Ottie[/name_u] and Otter are my favourite nn for [name_u]Elliott[/name_u]). It just seems to be in that not-yet-ready-to-come-back category, at least here in Germany. There are some “hipster/alternative” parents who do use it but it would be like naming your kid [name_m]Kurt[/name_m] or [name_f]Shirley[/name_f] in the US.
Now “dated” aside, I’m also not big on the American “Oddo” that [name_m]Otto[/name_m] would turn into.
From your extended list, I really like [name_m]Oskar[/name_m] and [name_m]Kasper[/name_m] (though I would spell the latter one [name_m]Kaspar[/name_m], to not have the Kasperletheater right in the name - also because I like [name_m]Kaspar[/name_m] [name_m]David[/name_m] [name_m]Friedrich[/name_m], the painter).
[name_m]Soren[/name_m] I only know as Sören, but it would give the sibset a more Scandinavian than [name_m]German[/name_m] vibe.
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m] is still my favourite, though (then [name_m]Oskar[/name_m] then [name_m]Kasper[/name_m]/[name_m]Kaspar[/name_m]).
I like your naming style a lot, and I think you can’t go wrong with these names, they all seem to go with [name_m]Konrad[/name_m] very well. I like [name_m]Otto[/name_m] (and [name_m]Otis[/name_m]) a lot, it’s an offbeat but solid, dashing choice. I adore [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]/[name_m]Oskar[/name_m] as well for a number of reasons, but I’m afraid it’s a little too similar to [name_m]Konrad[/name_m] when written down. I may be wrong though, it seems like a natural brother.
I have been crushing on [name_u]Arlo[/name_u], but it is slightly trendy compared to classic [name_m]Konrad[/name_m], I guess. Another similar name is [name_m]Adler[/name_m], I know you didn’t ask for ideas, but it sounds great with [name_m]Konrad[/name_m] and means “eagle” in [name_m]German[/name_m].
Hm, for the most part [name_m]Otto[/name_m] seems to be getting pretty good reviews. I do like [name_m]Oskar[/name_m], too. I’m so surprised to learn [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] is so popular here in the US (#183, if I remember correctly). That does kind of put me off to [name_m]Oskar[/name_m] (which I consider to be the same name basically). I’ll need to look up [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] in my state. [name_m]Soren[/name_m] is cool but I do agree, not very great for nicknames.
I’m still mourning [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]. Hoping he comes around to it again later. I could probably live with [name_m]Otto[/name_m] or one of the names on the list. @opheliaflora I do love [name_u]Ottie[/name_u] and Otter!
I like [name_m]Otto[/name_m] and I love [name_u]Arlo[/name_u]. I think both work with [name_m]Konrad[/name_m]. I would go with [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] for a middle name or [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] if you want to use both
I do think [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] flows better with most of our first name options. However [name_m]John[/name_m] is my dads name and is really like to honor him
I like [name_m]Otto[/name_m] a lot! However, I agree with a pp that [name_m]Otto[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] doesn’t have the best sound, especially next the the handsome [name_m]Konrad[/name_m] [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m]. [name_m]Otto[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] is much better. Maybe [name_m]Otto[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m]? Or would you be interested in using a [name_m]John[/name_m] derivative? [name_m]Otto[/name_m] [name_m]Johannes[/name_m]?
If DH does come back around to [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], I think [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] sounds much better. I love [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], but I might be biased since I gave my dog that name :). I actually really like all of the names on in your op!
Thank you all! In not sure why my husband likes [name_m]Otto[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] but not [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m]. When I told him they sounded the same he mockingly scoffed and said “and you call yourself a berry!” Such a smarta$$!
[name_m]Otto[/name_m] is quirky and cute to me. I can picture it on a boy or a man easily, of any age. I really like it a lot! It has a playful vibe to it.
Thanks everyone, I’m starting to warm up to [name_m]Otto[/name_m]. I’ve always liked it but never pictured it on my own little one. I do like [name_m]Konrad[/name_m] and [name_m]Otto[/name_m] together. Still holding out for [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], though!
Thank you, @coffeeorangecats! I would be willing to do [name_m]Otto[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m]. I really like the middle name flow of “[name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]” better than “[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m]” but do agree that the former sounds better with [name_m]Otto[/name_m]. You’re right, I do like the “vintage” feel of [name_m]Konrad[/name_m] and [name_m]Otto[/name_m]!
This is so funny, because all of the names on these lists are relatives of mine! They all came from Germany in the 30s. They were [name_m]Otto[/name_m], [name_m]Oskar[/name_m], [name_m]Konrad[/name_m] and the only one not listed here is my great grandpa [name_u]August[/name_u].
I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Otto[/name_m], but my husband’s last name is Center, so [name_m]Otto[/name_m] Center wouldn’t work for us. I can totally relate to [name_m]Otto[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] and the car theme.
Oh my gosh @cheyenne, how funny! Yes, my husband definitely has a name “type” and it is old school [name_m]German[/name_m]! His name is [name_m]Klaus[/name_m], so I guess he is drawn to that type of name I really like [name_u]August[/name_u] too but he has a cousin named [name_m]Augustus[/name_m]!
