Thoughts on pairing first & last names with similar endings

We are expecting a boy in a few weeks and [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] the name [name_u]Easton[/name_u]. While there are other “backup” names we are okay with, this name is by far our favorite. Some people we have shared this with feel the name is a bad idea because our last name is [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] and it sounds funny when put together (too repetitive with the endings). While I agree it doesn’t necessarily flow as well as some other names would, I’m wondering if it’s a big enough issue to scrap a name we love. I hate to settle, but I don’t want to give our kid a name that rhymes either. Middle name would be [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], which would help to break up the repetitive endings ([name_u]Easton[/name_u] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m]), but I also realize that on a day-to-day basis people rarely reference anyone by their full name, so I’m not sure that helps. [name_m]Feel[/name_m] free to share your honest opinion, thanks!

It’s too much for me. The last syllable of our last name sounds like “hers,” so we’ve eliminated some names we really like - [name_f]Esther[/name_f], [name_m]Asher[/name_m], [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] - from consideration. But we also don’t (and haven’t ever really) had any name that feels superior to others we love, so eliminating a few just means we have fewer to choose from when the time comes (and maybe a slightly easier decision as a result!).

I understand whatt you mean my fiance’s’ lastname is [name_m]Anderson[/name_m] so it knnocks out all -son names and all An- names as the flow is aweful

I think you’re over-thinking it unnecessarily. [name_u]Easton[/name_u] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] sounds great to me. There are plenty of famous people with similar name patterns- off the top of my head:

[name_m]Charlton[/name_m] Heston
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_u]Shelley[/name_u]
[name_m]Sean[/name_m] [name_m]Bean[/name_m]
[name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Karina[/name_f]

To my ear, the name doesn’t rhyme. It sounds good.

Best wishes!

I have the same issue!!! My husband loves the name [name_m]Archer[/name_m] but our last name ends in the “er” sound and its just too much for me…
That being said, I think [name_u]Easton[/name_u] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] is fine!! I am always on the prowl for names with the same ending sound, but this combo doesn’t bother me in the slightest. It actually feels rather masculine and handsome. I’m all in favor of this combo!

  • son is too much for me

plus they really both last name names…themonarch’s examples are names with similar endings but very different in style and origin

not to mention -son names are overly trendy right now

I think [name_u]Easton[/name_u] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] sounds fine if you really like the name. I know that if I heard that name on a kid, I wouldn’t think to myself “That’s kind of weird sounding, what were those parents thinking,” and that’s usually my gauge for how a name will sound on a real person.

The fact that they are both surnames didn’t occur to me initially but now that it has been pointed out, it may be something to consider whether you like that or not.

But really, if you love the name, go for it! It sounds like it’s definitely your favorite and even though it’s not everyone’s preference to have the -son endings, if you love it and it doesn’t bother you, then use it.

I have the same problem as you. My surname ends in son and so do all my favorite names. Personally, I probably wouldn’t use [name_u]Easton[/name_u] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m], but if it feels like the right name then go for it. It’s not a bad name by any means and the most important thing is that you love it.

I think it sounds fine together. If you wanting to name him like [name_u]Paxton[/name_u] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] then that would be too much.

I personally wouldn’t do it.

My advice would be to hunt around, see if you can find another name you like that has a different ending. If it gets down to the wire, your son is on the way, and you can’t find anything else, go ahead with [name_u]Easton[/name_u] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m].
