Thoughts on Penelope

Thinking of adding [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] to our short list of three names we’re centering around. I love the sound and I envision pure sweetness with this name. But it was 27 and now it’s 24 on the popularity scale. So I’m nervous. [name_m]How[/name_m] much more popular is it going to get? I know no one knows for sure… But I wonder, will it keep climbing? Should that matter? I can’t decide how I feel about it since my other daughters’ names are nowhere near as popular.

What are your thoughts?

I think [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is gorgeous with your daughters’ names, distinctive but compatible. It fits well what you have described you are looking for in a name. The potential for nicknames also makes it a versatile choice. I can’t predict popularity, but I will say that I have only met one [name_f]Ava[/name_f] in my entire life and I am a teacher. I have never met a [name_u]Harper[/name_u]. I know a few Emmas, but I know literally dozens of young Claires, Carolines, Madelines, and Katherines. If popularity is going to bother you, you might want to look in your immediate circle of family, friends, FB friends, classmates from school, etc. to see what names are likely to recur in your daughters’ world.

I think [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is gorgeous. Although it’s on the popular side, it’s too good not to use!

Check popularity in your state when that data becomes available in the next few days. In 2016 [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] was #27 nationwide but barely made top 100 in my state. It all depends on the area.

What about [name_f]Calliope[/name_f]? It’s only #812 in popularity.

Popularity might matter . . . that all depends on you! I personally was always one of (quite literally) five or six girls in my class and hated it. However, a few of my favorite names are used very frequently, but are so special to me that I would become one of many just to give my baby the moniker. [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is quite a bit more popular than your other girls’ names, so I would just take a minute to really consider whether individuality is important to you in a name, or if you wouldn’t mind your little [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] bumping into other little ladies with her name throughout her life.

I’m not a fan of [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. I find it a bit awkward to say, and it doesn’t look nice to me either. It gives me a slightly different vibe than your girls’ names, but it doesn’t sound bad or off with them. I’ve only met one [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], but I don’t hang around young kids very often, so I don’t have the best idea of what’s popular in the real world besides the list. I agree you should check the popularity of [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] in your state when the data is released next week.

[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is lovely and feisty! Really a fun, spunky choice. And although it is certainly popular on the charts, I have never met one in person.

Suggestions, if you decide the ranking is a dealbreaker ~

If you decide it’s too popular you could consider [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] for a middle name. I think it’s lovely

I don’t know anyone named [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] but I know [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f]’s [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]’s , [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]’s , [name_f]Makayla[/name_f]’s ( spelled different ways) [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]’s . But I don’t know any [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]’s/ [name_f]Sofia[/name_f]’s or [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]’s . I think even if it’s popular it will depend on where you live.

I love [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], it is so sweet, but yes I think it will continue to grow in popularity.

I love [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. I might balk at a top 10 name (unless I completely adored it, then I would use it anyway!) but less than that is not so much an issue for me. And with [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] there are so many great nn options that you can always be distinct in that way.

I’ve never met anyone named [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. I think these ranking numbers of names are a little pointless, as just because something rings up as popular does not mean that it is actually popular, common, or even used much at all in your area.

[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is a cute name, with lots of nickname options.

I’ve never met a [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] in real life, i think if the popularity is really a problem then you can use this name as a middle name.
