Thoughts on Rowen or Rowan for a girl

What do you think of [name]Rowan[/name] for a girl? And is it [name]Rowen[/name] or [name]Rowan[/name]?? Thanks!

I think [name]Rowan[/name] is slightly more feminine, although I prefer [name]Rowen[/name], and I like that name on a girl a lot. I think of it as a spunky kind of name, but would you consider [name]Rowena[/name] nn [name]Rowen[/name]/[name]Rowan[/name]? It has the [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] connections, which is one negative, but it would help avoid gender confusion for her.

As a student teacher I once spent two hours running around fixing paper work for a little [name]Rowan[/name] (she’d be in 2nd grade now) who had gone into the system as a boy. It was a nightmare to fix. It never occurred to anyone that it wasn’t a boy’s name. I think [name]Rowena[/name] nn [name]Rowen[/name] accomplishes the same thing without dooming the girl to a lifetime of correcting people.

I don’t like [name]Rowan[/name] on a girl as its one of my favourite boy names, but I’ll second the idea of [name]Rowena[/name] with Rowa/en as a nn.

I third this.

Frankly, I find it totally unattractive on a girl. It’s unisex but it’s really manly for me

[name]Rowan[/name] looks better than [name]Rowen[/name]

I adore [name]Rowan[/name]. For a boy. Really dislike it on a girl.

I love it for a girl! I can’t picture it as a boys name at all!

I have a two year old daughter named [name]Rowen[/name]. We get soooooo many compliments on her name. We had never heard the name before we picked it and to us it was completely feminine. We didn’t discover til later that it was more often used on a boy! She wears it perfectly. [name]Rowen[/name] is a sweet little girl with an incredible memory who loves to be outside, but enjoys wearing dresses. She is called “[name]Ro[/name]-[name]Ro[/name]” occasionally as a silly nickname, but I doubt that will stick around past her early childhood. I like the nickname on her as a toddler, but I don’t think I would like it later…

We chose “[name]Rowen[/name]” over “[name]Rowan[/name]” as we didn’t want her name to be confused as “[name]Ro[/name]-anne”.

We love her name!

I think its sweet for a girl. Honestly never occured to me it was a unisex and sounds so feminine to me. I have met 3 Rowans, age 6 months to 5 years, all girls. Can’t help with the spelling. Neither looks more feminine to me, but [name]Rowan[/name] seems a more intuitive spelling.

The proper spelling is [name]Rowan[/name].
I’m obviously a fan.
She does get a lot of boy confusion, but once corrected, people are all about it being on a girl.
I like [name]Rowena[/name] but the pronunciation is a bit of a problem. There is a main street in my city called [name]Rowena[/name] and everyone pronounces it Row-ee-na, and I prefer [name]Rowen[/name]-uh. So in the end, we went with [name]Rowan[/name]. Couldn’t be happier about it honestly. I love her name so much.

I typically don’t like unisex or boy’s names on girls but I absolutely love [name]Rowan[/name]! I have only ever known girls with the name so I see it as no frill yet still feminine name. I picture a very strong woman that always carries herself like a lady.

Hmm, I’m still slightly confused on this one after reading all of the responses. I guess it is a personal choice. But sister name is [name]Aubree[/name] which some people still view as a boy name (not myself personally!) but don’t want to have two daughters in that category. I do love the nickname [name]Ro[/name]!

I love [name]Rowan[/name] on a boy but find it too masculine for a girl. I know one [name]Rowan[/name], and he’s a male. [name]Rowena[/name] is a nice suggestion–hauntingly beautiful.

I can picture [name]Rowan[/name] as both a girl’s and a boy’s name. It’s interesting how much we base our perception of a name’s “gender” on whether we’ve encountered (mostly) boys or girls wearing it. Supports my opinion that a name becomes the child, and that concepts of masculine/feminine (sounds, in this case) are often fluid and socially constructed.

[name]Rowena[/name] is nice but a bit too…whimsical? in my opinion. I prefer [name]Rowan[/name]. It’s a great name.

FYI: Around 700 girls and 1100 boys were given the name Rowan last year, so it’s solidly unisex in practice/usage; also, it’s rising for both sexes (albeit more slowly for boys).
