My daughter recently started preschool & one of her classmates is [name]Roxy[/name]; I was really taken aback when I heard her name as to me it screams stripper name. I just can’t seem to get my head around why you would pick this name for your daughter. If I met an older adult with the name I might be less surprised & think maybe the name had a different feeling then.
Thoughts on this name? Can anyone explain the charm or appeal?
Oh & yes, I asked, it’s not a nn, it’s her full name.
I love the name [name]Roxy[/name]! My boyfriend also thinks it’s a stripper name, but I totally disagree. I knew a [name]Roxy[/name] in high school with this name who wore it well so I’m sure that helps. I find the name both spunky and laid back. She could be a sweet freckled red head with pig tails or a trend setting hipster in a rock band. I don’t even mind the connection to The Police song. I do prefer it as a nn for [name]Roxanne[/name], but I think it can definitely stand on its own.
Shanbrownie, I kind of get your point about being spunky/hipster… but your reference to the Police song reinforces my view, as it was about a prostitute.
I meant I still like the name, despite the song. I’m not oblivious to the song, but I can see past it. You asked if anyone could explain the charm or appeal of the name, as a fan of the both [name]Roxy[/name] and [name]Roxanne[/name], that is the perspective I tried to convey. It’s not a name for everyone, but hey I also love [name]Ginger[/name].
I really like [name]Roxy[/name]/[name]Roxie[/name] actually.
It feels nickname-ish but not especially stripper-ish. Or it does, but in such a vintage way its sort of saloon-girl charming, the way I feel about [name]Ruby[/name] - [name]Ruby[/name] is the 1880s bad-girl who runs off to the big city, whereas [name]Agatha[/name] is her prim and proper Old [name]West[/name] sister. [name]Roxy[/name] and [name]Nora[/name] would be the [name]Art[/name] Deco version.
I wouldn’t use [name]Roxy[/name] alone because of the nickname thing but I just don’t like nickname names. I’d use it as a short form of [name]Roxana[/name], Roxelana, [name]Raquela[/name], or something similar (and I accept suggestions! If they aren’t [name]Roxanne[/name]… I don’t like [name]Suzanne[/name], [name]Roseanne[/name], or any other -anne either)
To me, [name]Roxy[/name] feels vintage and, for example [name]Dolly[/name] actually feels ironic, and therefore both feel usable as nicknames for more buttoned up formal names.
But to me, [name]Delilah[/name], [name]Sasha[/name], and [name]Alexis[/name] are actually completely unusable because I guess they feel to me the way [name]Roxy[/name] feels to you. Your mileage may vary.
My mother is [name]Roxanna[/name] and goes by [name]Roxy[/name]. Its an okay name but since my mother and I have a rocky relationship at best the name is forever tainted. But due to my association I don’t see the stripper part.
I love it! I don’t think stripper at all. Unlike names such as “[name]Star[/name]” or “[name]Mistie[/name],” [name]Roxy[/name] is (usually) a nickname to a perfectly legitimate formal name. Maybe you feel the way you do in part because of its similarity to the word “foxy.” I used to watch a TV show called American Dreams set in the 1960s, and one of the main characters was an ADORABLE Italian-American high school girl named [name]Roxanne[/name], who went by “Rox.” She wore it so well that it is nearly impossible not to like after watching her. I also think it’s so fun to say aloud. I actually love knowing that there’s a little preschooler out there with such a peppy, clipped name.
I find it beyond insulting to say a name “screams stripper”. It’s one thing to say a name is often associated with strippers, but “screams stripper”?
Inappropriate.
[name]Roxy[/name] is a lovely name, with a great meaning, and it’s energetic and spunky. I’ve never even known of or heard of a promiscuous girl named [name]Roxy[/name]. They’ve all be lovely and sweet, or upbeat and rockerish.
There are many reasons why someone would choose the name [name]Roxy[/name], and really a parent shouldn’t have to justify that choice to someone, especially when it’s a negative judgment being made.
I also knew a [name]Roxy[/name] in high school–though it was just a nickname.
I agree that it might be a bit weird on a little girl, but for me it’s not as bad as some (like [name]Crystal[/name] and [name]Daisy[/name] and Sparkle and [name]Lacey[/name])
And I actually like names like [name]Trixie[/name] and [name]Trudy[/name] which are on the same level imo.
All perspective I guess.
I absolutely love [name]Roxanne[/name]/[name]Roxy[/name]/[name]Roxie[/name] so I always get a little disheartened when people say “stripper name.” To me, stripper names are names like “[name]Star[/name]” and “[name]Rainbow[/name]” and “[name]Candy[/name].” But [name]Roxy[/name] is a legitimate name! I can’t say I’d ever use it as a full name, but still.
Also, [name]Trixie[/name] is a total guilty pleasure of mine. A future middle, maybe.
[name]One[/name] of my best friends is named [name]Roxanne[/name] and uses [name]Roxy[/name] as a nn, do when I hear the name I think of her and then secondly [name]Roxy[/name] [name]Hart[/name] from Chicago. I think it is a lovely name, I wouldn’t use it because I would always associate it with my friend, not that that’s a bad thing, I just would prefer to use a name that I don’t associate with anyone else.
I don’t see it as a stripper name at all. Yes, there’s [name]Roxie[/name] [name]Hart[/name] from Chicago, and yes, there’s that song [name]Roxanne[/name], but a lot of names have songs about them. But it’s not a stripper name. I know a [name]Roxanne[/name] who goes by Rox or [name]Roxy[/name] sometimes, and she’s the most un-stripper like person, so I’ve got a really good association with the name. I can see where people can see it though, Chicago didn’t help the name.
I’d only ever do [name]Roxanne[/name] nn [name]Roxy[/name] though, it’s too nicknamey for me to go with just [name]Roxy[/name].
I mean, I can see the stripper association, but to me the biggest offense is that the name is just [name]Roxy[/name] and not a nickname.
In high school this girl told me that her favorite name was [name]Roxy[/name], so that’s kind of given it a negative association for me (she wasn’t very pleasant).
I also think of the surfing clothing company.
I can see the stripper association but at the same time I do love the name and its meaning ‘dawn’. I have a tradition of bright/light names like [name]Robert[/name] and [name]Helen[/name] in my family so i’m quite drawn to names that could tie in with that without being too obvious
Also more than the stripper thing I get quite a spunky/punk rock vibe off it, may just be a new fave actually
