What are your thoughts on Rumour? I understand there is bad connotations, but is it useable in your opinion?
The girls’ name [name_f]Rumer[/name_f], as used by [name_m]Bruce[/name_m] [name_m]Willis[/name_m] and [name_f]Demi[/name_f] [name_m]Moore[/name_m], apparently is an English name meaning “gypsy”. You could use that, but I wouldn’t use Rumour.
[name_m]Rumo[/name_m] is a Cornish boys’ name meaning “red”.
I like both [name_f]Rumer[/name_f] and [name_m]Rumo[/name_m].
I honestly hadn’t even thought of those two. I would definitely consider [name_f]Rumer[/name_f]
Thank you!
[name_f]Rumer[/name_f] apparently has a valid history and is not a misspelling of Rumor. Nickname could be [name_u]Rue[/name_u].
I get the appeal of the sound. I do. But it’s got such absolutely horrendous connotations, and I wouldn’t want my child’s name to have ANY kind of negative meaning, especially not ones so obvious. There are so many names with such fantastic meanings, and this is a very common word for something pretty nasty. [name_m]Even[/name_m] the most obvious nickname, [name_u]Rue[/name_u], means “sorrow” or “regret.” It does have a nice sound, but I’d keep looking.
I know a girl just a couple years younger than me that is named [name_f]Rumer[/name_f]. She’s a friend’s baby sister and after getting over the initial newness of the name it was a name like any other. It’s disuse may cause some eyebrows to raise, as people may think you named your kid Rumor, like the word which definitely is one of negative connotations.
I’d definitely consider these factors. Maybe there are other names similar in style that also appeal to you.
I would not use it, although I get its appeal.
I’m usually a huge fan of word names - I’ve even been known to make a case for [name_m]Ransom[/name_m]! - but the word rumour is almost never a good thing. I think it comes down to whether the sound or the meaning is more important to you. Example - would you name your child Gossip if you love the sound? Rumour and Gossip have the same meaning. If you react negatively to the idea of naming your child Gossip, I would say Rumour is out too. [name_m]Just[/name_m] my two cents
I like Drusilda, [name_f]Snowdrop[/name_f], and [name_m]Beacon[/name_m]. So I’m not for sure if I am good judgement but I don’t mind Rumour. Rumour sounds much like [name_m]Beacon[/name_m], its a puritan name and one that functions well today with other popular name choices like: Adventure, danger, tempie/temperest, comfort, velvet, grace, faith and soo forth.
Hello, 27 year old named Rumour here. The name definitely does have a negative connotation and meeting new people is annoying because I have to repeat myself 3 times before they understand what I’m saying. Not to mention the jokes. I do try to make the best of it though!
