Lately I’ve really been loving [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] on a boy… It has a soft, but strong sound to it just like my other favorites, [name_u]Micah[/name_u] and [name_m]Donovan[/name_m]. But I live in the United States, where [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] is considered a decidedly feminine name (especially what with [name_f]Natasha[/name_f] ‘[name_u]Sasha[/name_u]’ [name_m]Obama[/name_m], the president’s daughter). I think that a very masculine middle name would suit it, and perhaps make it a little more acceptable for a boy in the USA. I usually don’t like hugely masculine names though. So:
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] could work on a boy in the United States?
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you prefer it on a boy or a girl?
What middle names do you think would go with [name_u]Sasha[/name_u]?
I think [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] could work on a boy in the US, but probably only as a nickname. To me it would be simialr to naming your boy [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] - originally a male name, but has become decidedly female.
Personally I’m not a fan of [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] on either gender as a full name. I think of it more as a cute nickname, but not a name that would wear well in adulthood.
It’s very very girly to me, very soft sounding and an -a ending which is considered feminine most of the time. I wouldn’t do it, the kid would be teased a lot.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] could work on a boy in the United States? No I do not, I love the name too, but I couldn’t do that to my kid, especially since we don’t have any Russian background, so he would not have any real excuse to have a “girl” name.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you prefer it on a boy or a girl? Boy, but as I said, in the USA it is feminine unless you are lucky enough to be Russian.
What middle names do you think would go with [name_u]Sasha[/name_u]? If you do go for it, something masculine in the middle is a must, so something like:
[name_u]Sasha[/name_u] [name_m]Edward[/name_m]
[name_u]Sasha[/name_u] [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m]
[name_u]Sasha[/name_u] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]
[name_u]Sasha[/name_u] [name_m]Harrison[/name_m]
[name_u]Sasha[/name_u] [name_m]William[/name_m]
honestly, if you really love it, I think it would be better in the middle spot, that’s something I would consider except my husband vetoed the name due to the teasing potential.
I’ve known five Sashas: one female, four male. Of the male Sashas, three were American. Only one had ‘[name_m]Alexander[/name_m]’ on his birth certificate. I adore [name_u]Sascha[/name_u] for a boy (that spelling; not sure why I prefer it). Not only do I think it can work, I’ve seen it work – none of the male Sashas I knew were ever picked on or harassed for their names, and they were a very cool, diverse group of guys. Frankly, I think the teasing thing is ridiculously overblown.
As a first name, I don’t think that [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] would fly very well in the States. As a nickname for [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] (or a variant), it would be easier, I think. The president’s daughter association will be a very hard one to break.
I definitely prefer [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] on a boy.
watzmann- It actually kind of upsets me that so many good names for boys ([name_u]Ashley[/name_u], [name_u]Blake[/name_u], [name_u]Blaine[/name_u], [name_u]Sasha[/name_u]) have been taken into the female category. [name_m]Even[/name_m] my own name is a good male name turned female for whatever reason. As for [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] as a nickname, I’m not sure.
xredd- I would agree with the bit about teasing (it sounds kind of obvious at first), but I know a male [name_u]Sascha[/name_u] and he wasn’t teased (this spelling). He’s actually how I was introduced to the name.
catloverd- Thank you so much! I, unfortunately, am purely of Irish heritage, which would veto the option of a Russian background used as a reason for the name. I really like [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m], thank you!
rkrd- I’m not positive how that would work Would you mind explaining that for me?
augusta_lee- I also knew a male [name_u]Sascha[/name_u] who was never teased for his name. It’s nice to know that there are plenty of male [name_u]Sasha[/name_u]/Saschas out there with positive name experience.
lucialucentum- Ooh! [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] [name_m]Gregory[/name_m] is lovely!
I’ve only ever known male Saschas – usually a nickname/diminutive of [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], and all but one were of Russian descent (the one who wasn’t was [name_m]French[/name_m]-Canadian). Kind of like [name_u]Mischa[/name_u] for [name_u]Michael[/name_u]. I wouldn’t think of the name as feminine at all, but I also don’t know if I’d use it as a nickname for [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] (one of the names we’re considering for this next little guy) – not because it sounds feminine, but because our cultural backgrounds aren’t ones that would use this as a nickname. I do like it as either a nickname or first name, though, and I’m fairly certain that none of the Saschas I’ve met we’re teased.
I love [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] on a boy! It’s on my long list. I think it could work. Though I guess in the US the first daughter association may be very strong atm and would probably be the first thoughts of many people upon hearing the name, but it has plenty of male bearers too and don’t think it would actually lead to serious teasing.
Maybe spelling it [name_u]Sacha[/name_u], like [name_u]Sacha[/name_u] [name_m]Baron[/name_m] [name_m]Cohen[/name_m] could make it seem more masculine if you’re conserned…
I love [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] more for a girl…
I did once meet a boy [name_u]Sascha[/name_u], and he didn’t seem to like it very much. He was adopted from [name_f]Russia[/name_f], and kept his name. Not knowing I was a namenerd, he instinctively reassured me that it was a boy name where he was from. LOL, he wore it nicely though!
I only know one girl with the name [name_u]Sasha[/name_u], and it’s my mom! And her name isn’t actually [name_u]Sasha[/name_u], that was just her stage name Her real name is [name_f]Monique[/name_f]
