Thoughts on Sloane

I’m really loving the name [name_u]Sloane[/name_u], but have had such mixed reviews when talking with friends (some even aren’t sure how to pronounce it?!)

I think it’s a great, strong name! [name_m]Can[/name_m] I have your thoughts?

I’m afraid I’m not sure how to pronounce it either, and not a big fan either way. All I see is surname (a cool surname at least!)

This is one I can’t gel with, I’m sorry! I PN it rhyming with [name_u]Joan[/name_u], is that right?

Why it's not for me - don't read this if you like the name and don't want someone else's silly associations to be on your mind - there's no good reason for them

[name_u]Sloane[/name_u] makes me think of slime, slugs, snails and the word slow!! I have no idea why!!! Other than that they’re other words bringing with ‘SL’ of course. I love the name [name_u]Joan[/name_u] which is objectively a really similar name, sound-wise :woman_shrugging:t2:

I absolutely love [name_u]Sloane[/name_u]! For me, it’s synonymous with that laidback American cool girl type from high school movies (think [name_m]Ferris[/name_m] Bueller’s [name_u]Day[/name_u] Off or Detention). I know a lot of Brits will see it more as a posh girl thing (think [name_f]Diana[/name_f], [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] [name_u]Ranger[/name_u], etc) so it depends if that association’s a dealbreaker but, if not, I think stick with your heart! It’s chic, unfussy, and absolutely divine

Personally it’s not my favorite, but I don’t hate it either. But if it’s any consolation, I’ve been noticing this name become more and more popular. I’ve seen a few babies on social media with [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] as a first or middle name, so at least you know others share your taste and if you do give your baby this name the pronunciation will become more widely known soon and people won’t look at you like you gave your baby a crazy name because they’ll probably have heard it before.

Reminds me of the cool girl in [name_m]Ferris[/name_m] [name_m]Bueller[/name_m]! Sounds kind of jazzy too. I didn’t like it as a kid but it’s pretty cool sounding now. [name_f]My[/name_f] hesitation with it is that I don’t find it very pretty.

[name_u]Sloane[/name_u] gives me very "upper-crust’ vibes but not in a snobby way like [name_f]Muffy[/name_f].

[name_u]Sloane[/name_u] is preppy, often wear pear stud earrings, but is also athletic. lol

Other names with a similar vibe to me:

[name_f]Blythe[/name_f]
[name_u]Blaire[/name_u] (boy or girl)
[name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_u]Sutton[/name_u]
[name_u]Laurel[/name_u]

I love [name_u]Sloane[/name_u]! One of my nieces middle name. I thinks it’s a smooth straight forward surname that isn’t too popular.

I have no confusion on how to pronounce it, slow-n, like [name_u]Joan[/name_u].

If that’s an issue, you could always spell it without the -e, [name_u]Sloan[/name_u]. I do think the [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] spelling is more feminine.

I personally don’t love it, i think it’s something to do with the sounds. I also can’t really picture this name on a young child.

I think it’s really cool!! For me, I have the hardest time pronouncing the “sl” sound so I wouldn’t use it for myself for that reason. Though I’ve never heard anyone else mention they have that pronunciation issue so I think it’s just me. :sob::sob::sob:

I like the style of [name_u]Sloane[/name_u]. I like the look of [name_u]Sloane[/name_u]. I like the meaning of [name_u]Sloane[/name_u]. I don’t like the sound of [name_u]Sloane[/name_u].

In summary, I like it…for somebody else’s kid.

So I say if you like it, use it! There is absolutely nothing wrong with it as a name, it just comes down to personal preference.

(Also I pronounce it to rhyme with Joan)

I love it! I prefer the [name_u]Sloan[/name_u] spelling, though. It makes me think of a very cool, laid back girl.

I always assumed it was one syllable and rhymed with [name_u]Joan[/name_u].

Honestly I don’t really like [name_u]Sloane[/name_u]. The sound is really unappealing to me. I think it partly reminds me of “slow” as others have mentioned - it doesn’t feel energetic at all to me.

Agree with this completely. Huge fan of Sloane

Very much dislike. I genuinely believe names shape a person and every [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] I’ve met has been horrific. And it just doesn’t sound pretty. it is becoming more popular though, so obviously people like it.
