This one is pretty close to my son’s mn, so I’m in favor overall. However, I think there are variations that I might prefer:
Solis
Solaris (maybe- it’s also a car)
[name_f]Solstice[/name_f]
Solin? [SOW-linn]
There is also a [name_m]French[/name_m] girls name, [name_m]Sol[/name_m]ène, which I love. Not sure if there is a male version?
There’s also Sóley, also for a girl.
Solan looks on first glance like Soltan, missing a T. It sounds too dark for me to use as a sun reference…
I like it, and I love love love [name_m]Sol[/name_m]! It’s definitely usable.
@vc2013: Thanks for your response, I appreciate you listing some other variations. I really like Solaris but it doesn’t sound like a name that would be wearable in real life. (I actually didn’t even know it was a car, but that makes it kind of awkward.) I have a second cousin named [name_f]Solstice[/name_f] so I can’t use it, despite its beauty! [name_m]Sol[/name_m]ène is lovely–yet another example of a girl’s name I love but no comparable boy name! I love so many girl names but my partner and I just can’t settle on a boy name at all. One of my favorites for a boy is [name_u]Sage[/name_u] (it looks like you have a child named this? Gorgeous!) but my partner’s sister almost used that name and now she feels weird about using it. It’s also so hard to find a middle name for [name_u]Sage[/name_u]!
@katinka: Thanks for your reply! I love [name_m]Sol[/name_m] too :). [name_f]Glad[/name_f] you like it!
[name_m]Ive[/name_m] never heard of it before but I love it.
I like Solan! Out of curiosity, would you consider [name_f]Soleil[/name_f] on a boy?
@islandmoon: Thank you!
@fungusamongus: I’m glad! I don’t think I’d use [name_f]Soleil[/name_f] on a boy though, because 1) It’s mostly considered a girl’s name. (I’m totally fine with unisex names or feminine sounding boy names, but I’m not sure this one works for me.) And 2) it reminds me too much of the circus troop. I love Cirque du [name_f]Soleil[/name_f] and I have great respect for everyone who participates in it, but the word has a firm association with it in my mind.
So far it seems that most people either like Solan or don’t like it but find it usable. I appreciate all the votes and replies! Please keep voting or commenting. This name has become important to my partner so it is important to me by extension :).
