When I was a kid I knew a number on [name]Sonja[/name]/[name]Sonya[/name]/Sonias. They were mostly middle-aged and part of the alternative medicine/hippy world we grew up in (one was a midwife, another owned a health food store). I have met only one other [name]Sonja[/name] in 20 years. Any feelings on this name? I feel like I should like it, but I’m not sure I do.
I have known a few people with that name. To be honest, I have not liked any of them That being said, I do like the sound of the name, but I really dislike it spelled as [name]Sonia[/name].
[name]Sonya[/name]/[name]Sonja[/name] is a nickname for [name]Sophia[/name] in [name]Russia[/name]. It’s lovely and I guess it can be used on its own. A frilly middle name would compliment it nicely. I think it falls in the category of [name]Anja[/name]/[name]Freja[/name]/[name]Tanja[/name] and it’s, as I saud, similar to [name]Sophia[/name] but it’s more refreshing. I would prefer to meet a little [name]Sonja[/name] rather than a little [name]Sophia[/name].
[name]One[/name] remark: [name]Sonja[/name] is commonly used for almost only Jewish girls in [name]Russia[/name], I know few Sonjas who were not Jewish. I don’t think it’s a bad think but just my thoughts.
I knew it was a Scandanavian/eastern European version of [name]Sophia[/name] (which is a beautiful name - seriously wish it wasn’t so popular). But I didn’t know it was so strongly Jewish. I dont’ think that’s a problem, but it is interesting.
I haven’t liked any of the [name]Sonja[/name]/Sonias I’ve met either I think that’s why I can’t make up my mind on it. The last [name]Sonia[/name] I met was a professor I particularly clashed with. I do prefer the [name]Sonja[/name] spelling, which might help.
I have never been a fan. It doesn’t sound pretty to my ear. Plus, I don’t have good associations with the name.
I love [name]Sonia[/name] (prefer this spelling but they are all nice)! It has a slightly earthy/hippie feel to me as well for some reason. I’ve only met one in my life and she is in her 60’s now. I think it would be so refreshing to meet a little [name]Sonia[/name]
I know a few Sonias, I prefer the spelling with the I. Where I live it’s not particularly fresh, but it’s not that common either. I don’t have any strong feelings about it. I guess to me it seems a bit bland. But I can understand how one could find it pretty.
I know a really cute, spunky chick of about 27 called [name]Sonya[/name], pronounced with a long “o,” to rhyme with phone. She’s of Mexican descent and looks it, but doesn’t speak Spanish or have an accent. The name is just perfect on her somehow, and knowing her made me really like it. She hates it when people say “SAHN-yuh.” She says she never liked her name growing up but the older she gets the more she likes it b/c she never hears it on anyone her age.
I honestly have never been a fan of it.
It’s alright. Makes me think of the Vampire from Underworld.
Ugh. All I can think of is that lady with same name from RHONY. Same goes for the name [name]Ramona[/name]. No thanks!
I love [name]Sonia[/name]. It is so refreshing and sweet. Not as big of a fan for [name]SonJa[/name], however. I like the “i” better. My second choice would be the “y.”
I’m rather fond of [name]Sonia[/name]. I’ve never met one, so it continues to be whatever I want in my head. It does make me think of Mad About You where the daughter is a teenager and says she wants to change her name to [name]Sonya[/name]. The mother reminds her that her name, [name]Mabel[/name], stands for Mothers Always Bring Extra [name]Love[/name], and the daughter comes back with [name]Sonya[/name] standing for Some Other Name You A$$.
I met a little baby [name]Sonia[/name] about a year or so ago. It was so refreshing. Its a beautiful name.
