Its a name that is familiar, but I never meet anyone with it. Opinions on [name_f]Taryn[/name_f]?
I like [name_f]Tara[/name_f] and [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f] a lot, but [name_f]Taryn[/name_f] isn’t my thing.
There were a (statistically unlikely!) two Taryns in the grade below me in elementary school (would have been born in the mid-late 80s) and another in my college dorm (ditto). I actually can’t remember how they all spelled it - I think there may have been a [name_f]Taran[/name_f] or [name_f]Tarren[/name_f] in there.
On one hand, it feels sort of 80s/ 90s to me, with the androgynous or feminized boy name vibe and the similarity to [name_f]Tara[/name_f]. I think it’s the y that does it - like [name_u]Devyn[/name_u] or [name_m]Kellyn[/name_m]. I slightly prefer the [name_f]Taran[/name_f] spelling, which is less pointy, but maybe that’s more boyish. However, [name_f]Taryn[/name_f]/[name_f]Taran[/name_f] shares sounds with [name_f]Tara[/name_f], [name_f]Karen[/name_f], [name_f]Megan[/name_f], [name_u]Terry[/name_u], etc, so if I had never heard the name before, going by sound alone I would probably peg it as a girl name.
I’d like to echo what another poster mentioned in another thread about “dated” sounding names - when I say 80s/90s I don’t mean that it sounds unusable or bad or even old, just that I feel like I would pin its usage to a particular point in time.
[name_f]Taryn[/name_f] feels like either a tomboy, or a sort of dreamy, barefoot in the woods sort of girl. If you’re thinking of it yourself, it feels different from your girl favorites, but I think it fits in nicely with [name_m]Maddox[/name_m].
I don’t like it. Maybe it’s because of “tar” beginning I tend to dislike. I picture something heavy and clumsy. I guess Y makes me dislike it even more than I dislike [name_f]Tara[/name_f]. Sorry!
I don’t like it. My first thought when I see it is the actress [name_f]Taryn[/name_f] [name_m]Manning[/name_m].
It’s my name. Nice to see it’s pretty hated on here.
I get complimented on it quite often, once I correct the pronunciation. Most people have trouble with it, although I feel like it’s a pretty straightforward name in terms of spelling and pronunciation. I didn’t like it when I was growing up, because everyone was named [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] and [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] and [name_f]Lauren[/name_f] and my name was different and weird. I’ve grown to like it quite a lot. I’ve known three others, one who shares my exact name, [name_f]Taryn[/name_f] [name_f]Amber[/name_f], who would be about 8 now. One I went to college with, though I only knew of her, we we never actually met. And one who is four and got her name from me. Her dad was my adviser in college and his wife saw my name on a file and liked it.
I have heard the name before but I only actually know one [name_f]Taryn[/name_f] and I have no idea if that’s how she spells her name. She is in her mid-twenties and a complete sweetheart.
I actually prefer this spelling over other possibilities: [name_f]Taren[/name_f], [name_f]Tarin[/name_f], [name_f]Taran[/name_f]? All look odd. So yes to [name_f]Taryn[/name_f] spelling.
I think it’s one of those names that sound like a twist to an established one. In this case [name_f]Karen[/name_f], but the twist works. I’m actually surprised I haven’t met more people with this name.
It’s my sister’s name as well as a freshman girl at my school. [name_m]Both[/name_m] spell their name [name_f]Taryn[/name_f]. I also knew one my year who spells it [name_f]Tarryn[/name_f]. It’s fine, I guess, since I’m pretty used to it, but I have a hard time seeing anyone else with the name other than my sister. The name itself isn’t really pleasant in my ear, but I find it to be a strong-sounding name.
I find it quite dated I know one who would be about 25? I prefer [name_f]Tara[/name_f] but not that much more sorry
This name makes one wonder how to pronounce it ie either Tar in or the way that I would say it Ta (as in tap) in.
I would prefer a name that looks more classical but if used at all I would prefer it as a middle. I am pleased that my mother gave me a classic name - [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] which defies the passage of time whereas I think like many other names [name_f]Taryn[/name_f] will be lumped in with the Karens, the Courtneys and the Jennifers as names that are popular for a while and then are forgotten.
Having said all that I do like [name_f]Taryn[/name_f].
rollo
I like it. I find it familiar as it is similar to [name_f]Tara[/name_f] and [name_f]Teri[/name_f] and brings to mind [name_f]Karen[/name_f] but seems fresher. It has a strong vibe to that I like.
I like it OK, don’t love it, but it’s fine. It makes me think of [name_f]Taryn[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f], the shoe brand.
I prefer [name_f]Taryn[/name_f] to [name_f]Tara[/name_f], simply because I know a [name_f]Tara[/name_f] who seemed to make it her life goal to make me miserable in elementary school. I used to have [name_f]Taryn[/name_f] on my name list when I was younger (about 15-16), as well as [name_u]Fallon[/name_u] (still a GP of mine, one of the few unisex names I like more on a girl), [name_f]Aisling[/name_f], and [name_f]Caoimhe[/name_f] ([name_u]Keeva[/name_u]).
To me, [name_f]Taryn[/name_f] is very sporty and athletic, a girl who’d rather wear a ponytail and trainers/sneakers than wearing something trendy. I can see a [name_f]Taryn[/name_f] being a figure skater, gymnast, dancer, baseball player, basketball player, hockey player, soccer player - just about every sport. I also imagine a [name_f]Taryn[/name_f] being really good in school as well, sort of like, a well-rounded student.
Wikipedia lists the pronunciation of [name_f]Taryn[/name_f] as TARE-en or TARE-in, to clear up confusion
[name_f]Taryn[/name_f] can be a lovely name, if it’s paired with a less trendy middle name. For example:
[name_f]Taryn[/name_f] [name_f]Nevaeh[/name_f] will, in time, become very dated and detestable, even.
[name_f]Taryn[/name_f] [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] will not be AS dated - but it can be narrowed down to a couple of decades.
[name_f]Taryn[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] can’t be tied to one decade, and the classic MN gives [name_f]Taryn[/name_f] a bit more balance.
All in all, I like it, if it’s paired with the right siblings and the right middles
