Several years ago, I saw a birth announcement card in someone’s home for a baby boy (their great grandson) named [name]Crew[/name]. At the time, I found it charming, but over the years, my love has grown and it is now my favorite, favoritest boy name.
I love that it is quirky and charming, but not totally out-there, and easy to spell and pronounce. It brings to mind Northeastern preppiness: boating and [name]Ivy[/name] League schools and [name]Martha[/name]'s Vineyard and good manners. Not terrible associations, [name]IMO[/name].
It is also the ONLY name I like paired with my SOs first choice boy name, [name]Isaac[/name], which I otherwise cannot stand. But I love [name]Crew[/name] [name]Isaac[/name], so go figure! Also hoping that if we ever have a boy, I’ll be able to sway my SO with the middle name.
Anyway, what do you Berries think of [name]Crew[/name]?
I have the same associations with the name [name]Crew[/name] that you do -[name]New[/name] [name]England[/name] preppiness. If that fits your family and lifestyle, the name works really well.
I try to look at names from the perspective of the person who will be using them all their life. I can think of reason why a boy or man would dislike the name [name]Crew[/name]. It would be unique but not weird, there is little teasing potential, and no distasteful nicknames.
Maybe it’s because I went to school with a guy named [name]Crew[/name] for four years, but [name]Crew[/name] doesn’t phase me. I don’t see a group of men on a ship or anything nautical; I just see the guy I know named [name]Crew[/name]. The only thing that throws me is trying to figure out where the sudden interest in [name]Crew[/name] as a first name came from. Of all the words to be turned into names, why [name]Crew[/name]?
Anyway, [name]Crew[/name] isn’t my style but I don’t dislike it. I picture a hulking football player rather than a wealthy, [name]Ivy[/name] League prep, but again… I’m biased.
I really like it but I wouldn’t use it. I remember there was a little boy on Extreme Makeover - Home Edition with this name, if I remember correctly he had two older brothers called [name]Sawyer[/name] and [name]Thatcher[/name].
I like it too. It’s unique but simple and stylish. I thought of the clothing brand J. [name]Crew[/name], but I don’t think I would make that connection if it was on an actual person.
I don’t like it very much. It feels trendy like [name]Cruz[/name] ([name]Beckham[/name]) somehow very 90s at the same time and kind of reaching for preppiness with it’s images of boys rowing crew, J crew, ect and the word crew also has the ‘group of people’ meaning that puts me in mind of a motley crew, a gang, which has punk and/or hip hop images for me.
I also hear a similarity to the word crude. And I think of how unfortunate a name it would be for an isolated loner type who is without a crew.
Sorry to criticize it so hard. If you love it go for it, it’s not horrible, but those are my associations.
I don’t like it. It’s too much just a word to my ear. My first association isn’t sailboats or anything, it’s more something like a ‘gang’- a group of youngin’s who hang out (this is my ‘crew’). I didn’t think about the ‘crew’ boating association or Northeast [name]Ivy[/name] league pretentiousness until I read your post (and I just talked about the sport of ‘crew’ to some of my students just a few days ago). I don’t know why exactly, but when I hear the name [name]Crew[/name] I picture a big scary dude with a scowl.
I have never heard the name before - but I love it! Go for it My first thought was … it has the ‘we’ of [name]Owen[/name] and [name]Gwen[/name], two names I really like, but with [name]Owen[/name] becoming so much more popular (at least around here) - I find it refreshing.
