I think I’m set on [name_f]Despina[/name_f] for one of my daughters, what do you guys think? Also any mn recommandations?

Despina isn’t my style but it’s an interesting nane. [name_u]Dessie[/name_u] would make such a cute nickname!!

Hmm… I am normally not one to be bothered by words similar to names, but despise and despot really come to mind for me since this name is very unfamiliar to me. That said, I see the appeal and the sounds are lovely together.

Desdemona and [name_f]Alcina[/name_f] would be my alternative suggestions.

Otherwise, I’d embrace the “lady” with
[name_f]Despina[/name_f] [name_f]Birdie[/name_f], “[name_f]Lady[/name_f] [name_u]Bird[/name_u]”

I also love it, but people constantly say desperate and despise are problematic association… which isn’t great, I have to agree, but name is sure pretty.

I find it pretty and the meaning is nice. I think it works if you have Greek heritage, but I don’t think I could pull it off. It would just sound too foreign where I live.

Hey guys! thanks for all the replies. If it makes a difference, it’s pronounced des-pee-na, not des-pine-a. Either way I don’t think I’ll be using this name.

Hmm, I want to like it, but I think it just might not go over very well. I like previous suggestions of [name_f]Desdemona[/name_f] and [name_f]Proserpina[/name_f]. However, I do think [name_u]Dessie[/name_u] is cute.

I really like it! It’s pretty and fresh-sounding. I’m clearly in the minority, but none of those negative words (despise, despot, desperate) has ever occurred to me when seeing this name.

I’d put it in the same category as names like [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f], [name_f]Perdita[/name_f], [name_f]Jocasta[/name_f], [name_f]Hestia[/name_f] – pretty, substantial, refined-sounding female names with a long history that have never really been “discovered”, for one reason or another.
