Thoughts on the name Dexter?

[name_u]Dexter[/name_u] has always intrigued me, but I’ve been considering it much more seriously in recent months. [name_m]Declan[/name_m] was a top choice for my husband and I for the past 5 or so years. I came across it one day on a naming site and I had never heard of it before and totally fell in love with it. I know the “traditional” nickname is [name_m]Deke[/name_m] which is okay, but I have heard the nickname Decs/[name_m]Dex[/name_m] being used occasionally which we really liked. Now due to [name_m]Declan[/name_m]'s ever-growing popularity and now being seen by some as “trendy” since it’s an Irish name and has the “an” ending, I am getting weary about using it if we have a boy in the next couple of years.

Since we still love the idea of [name_m]Dex[/name_m] as a nickname, I thought about [name_u]Dexter[/name_u]. I love how it’s kind of spunky and different, but the association with the popular show makes me nervous, not only that the name itself may be used by a growing number of people but also the association with the creepy character.

So, what are your thoughts on [name_u]Dexter[/name_u]? Middle name would most likely be [name_u]James[/name_u]. Older sister is [name_f]Nora[/name_f] [name_f]Cathleen[/name_f] who goes by both [name_f]Nora[/name_f] and [name_f]Nora[/name_f] [name_f]Cate[/name_f].

I like [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] much more than [name_m]Declan[/name_m], personally. [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] just feels more spunky & casual & fun. I think it’s a great choice!

I actually really like the name [name_u]Dexter[/name_u]. It’s “spunky & casual & fun”, as a pp said. I understand your concern with the tv character named [name_u]Dexter[/name_u], but what I think of is the cartoon [name_u]Dexter[/name_u]'s Laboratory.

I wouldn’t put this name off since it’s probably just the name you’ve been looking for. It really does make a great alternative to “trendy” [name_m]Declan[/name_m] and gives you the adorable nickname [name_m]Dex[/name_m]. And with the “classic” [name_f]Nora[/name_f] [name_f]Cathleen[/name_f], [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] makes for a nicely paired sibset. I say go for it!

I love [name_u]Dexter[/name_u]! Sure it’s uncommon enough people may associate it with the tv show but … It is a tv show honestly. People still name their kids [name_m]Ted[/name_m] and [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] even though they were names of famous real life serial killers (guarantee the names are more common). All I’m saying is don’t not use a name because of an association with a work of fiction, especially when it possible will be forgotten by the time your child has grown up.

I love it and plan to use it if I have a second son (my first son is [name_m]Reuben[/name_m]). The TV show doesn’t bother me like the pp said it will be forgotten by the time your child grows. I love the nn [name_m]Dex[/name_m].

I also prefer [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] to [name_m]Declan[/name_m]…and I love the nn [name_m]Dex[/name_m]. [name_f]Nora[/name_f] and [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] seems like a cute sibset!

I don’t think the association with the show is automatic…if [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] were a name that had been made up for that character, it would be one thing, but that’s not the case. And the show is off the air now…I doubt people will really make the connection in a few years.

Thanks guys! What kind of name would you consider [name_u]Dexter[/name_u]? Definitely not classic or popular. Not really trendy. Hipster? Hmm.

I do like [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] a lot and especially the nn [name_m]Dex[/name_m]. Can I get you to consider [name_m]Desmond[/name_m]? It is underused and if you maul it over, I think you will learn to love it! The nn [name_m]Dez[/name_m] is current, and [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] and [name_f]Nora[/name_f] make an amazing sibset.

Best of luck!

Thanks, but for some reason I’m not a fan of [name_m]Desmond[/name_m]. It seems too stuffy to me - like [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] and [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] or even [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u]. [name_m]Dez[/name_m]/[name_m]Des[/name_m] or [name_m]Dezi[/name_m]/[name_u]Desi[/name_u] feel effeminate to me.
