Thoughts on the name Leonidas?

I recently came across the name [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m]. I really like the nickname [name_m]Leo[/name_m]/[name_m]Leon[/name_m] for this name.

Please let me know your thoughts on this name and if it is not one that you like, can you please give me suggestions of boy names that are unique with common/cool nicknames.

I would really appreciate the help thank you!!

[name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] is a LOT of name. The -as ending isn’t too common in modern names which highlights even more that it’s ancient and clunky. But that being said, [name_m]Leo[/name_m] as an easy nickname that’s a commonly used name nowadays makes it a lot more accessible. I think you could use it, but you’d have to be prepared for the fact that he may find it too unwieldy and choose to exclusively go by a nickname when he’s older.

[name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] weighty and magnificent, but wearable, and I love the goldenness and strength of the lion imagery.

I love the name [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m], obviously! It’s really fun to say and [name_m]Leo[/name_m]/[name_m]Leon[/name_m] are great nickname options. If you’re looking for a longer version of [name_m]Leo[/name_m] and an alternative to the more popular [name_m]Leonardo[/name_m], [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] is great option. I actually wish I would have saved it for a child rather than my dog.

I agree that it’s a heck of a lot of name. Especially if your surname is something like [name_m]Smith[/name_m] or [name_m]Johnson[/name_m].

Personally, I am extraordinarily tired of [name_m]Leo[/name_m]. It’s very popular right now, often by people who think they’re being incredibly quirky and different. Why not [name_m]Leonard[/name_m]? You could call him [name_m]Len[/name_m].

Other names that are different but have ordinary nicknames:
[name_m]Anders[/name_m] nn [name_u]Andy[/name_u]
[name_m]Hendrik[/name_m] nn [name_m]Hank[/name_m]
[name_m]Edgar[/name_m] nn [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]
[name_m]Wilfred[/name_m] nn [name_m]Will[/name_m]
[name_m]Carlton[/name_m] nn [name_u]Kit[/name_u] (this was my great-great uncle’s name and nickname and I think it sounds pretty cool, much better than what his poor sister [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] got)
[name_m]Josiah[/name_m] nn [name_u]Joey[/name_u]

I think it’s very usable. I don’t even see it as something unusual, especially since it has the wonderfully friendly [name_m]Leo[/name_m] and [name_m]Lenny[/name_m] as nickname options.

I like it, although I tend to prefer one and two syllable names. Other ideas along those lines:

[name_m]Evander[/name_m]
[name_m]Virgil[/name_m]
[name_m]Cyril[/name_m]
[name_m]Cyrus[/name_m]
[name_m]Ulysses[/name_m]

It’s fabulous! Majestic, cool and striking. I really like [name_m]Leo[/name_m], even though it’s pretty popular round here and has been for a while. It’s got such a bright and powerful sound.

If you wanted a less popular nickname, I rather like the sound of [name_m]Nye[/name_m]. I know one, short for Aneirin, but it would totally work for [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] too.

I [name_f]ADORE[/name_f] [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m]! I admit it’s very surface level–I just love the look and the sound of it, which is partially why I’ve not added it to my list. I feel like I need to love the historical [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m], too? Or at least have some tie to it.

[name_m]Leo[/name_m] itself is on my list, but [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] is my second favorite of the [name_m]Leo[/name_m] names. He’s so cuddly, cool, and unexpected! I love the idea of something like [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] [name_m]Jack[/name_m] or [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] for a combo.

Good luck!

I think it’s awesome!

I absolutely [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m]! I agree that it’s a lot, but if you like it then use it

I’d love to use it someday

I really like it. A coworker actually recently used this for her son, but only because her husband was adamant about using it. She thinks it is way too much name (I worry the same, honestly), so calls him [name_m]Leo[/name_m]. Take that how you will, I suppose.

[name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] is a lot of name, but there’s a certain charm to it. He might find it too much but if that’s true than he could go by [name_m]Leo[/name_m] or [name_m]Leon[/name_m].

[name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] is so funky and cool! It’s quite a lot of name but it still feels very wearable. I also love that there’s a famous chain of chocolate shops called [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m].

[name_f]My[/name_f] son’s name is [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m]. We aren’t allowing nicknames until he is old enough to decide if he wants one. We have gotten a mix of comments. Most people love it.

How would you pronounce this? Like [name_u]Leo[/name_u] or like [name_m]Leonard[/name_m] how [name_u]Leo[/name_u] is prn [name_m]Len[/name_m]?
