My great-grandfather’s name was Salvatore and it is also my middle name.
Our children are taking my wife’s last name Kennedy, and we think the juxtaposition between the very Italian name with a classic Irish surname is cool.
For nicknames we’d probably call him Sal or Sally. Thoughts?

[name_m]Salvatore[/name_m] is handsome and bold–he sounds the hero of an epic poem or an adventure novel! The first association I have is the author R. A. [name_m]Salvatore[/name_m] (my brother loves D&D and listened to all the [name_u]Legend[/name_u] of Drizzt books); that may contribute to the fantasy vibes and the imagery of rapiers and cloaks and quests for lost worlds.
All in all, I love it, and I think Sal/Sally are cute nicknames that make it feel more familiar.
I have a good friend who has a young son named [name_m]Salvatore[/name_m] (the only one I’ve ever met & it was also a family name for them). It works so well - such a cool name! They have a very [name_m]German[/name_m] last name, so similar juxtaposition.
I think it’s a very nice name for a small kid, but more importantly, it will grow very well with him. I can imagine it on a person of every age.
Sal/Sally are great nicknames!
Salavtore is very cool and arty
It’s one of my favourite names!
I think combining family names is always fun! I’ve meet Salvatore’s and Salvador’s so it’s not unheard of but definitely not overused and it’s a great strong name with a wonderful meaning and an artsy image. I think I works great for y’all!
One of my best friends in college was a [name_m]Salvatore[/name_m]. I think it’s a great name!
[name_m]Salvatore[/name_m] is really handsome. I associate it with the Mad Men character - an artist and always so cool and well dressed!
He went by [name_u]Sal[/name_u].
I like it! It’s bold and interesting, and uncommon. However, this is just my opinion and feel free to ignore it, but I think [name_f]Sally[/name_f] is too girly to be a nn for a boy, as it’s been used for years as a girl’s full first name.
I love the name [name_m]Salvatore[/name_m], especially with the nicknames you are thinking of. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though [name_f]Sally[/name_f] is traditionally very feminine, I don’t think many would bat an eye once they know his full name. It’s the kind of name I don’t think he would ever grow out of.
