Thoughts on Theon?

I am expecting a baby boy and unfortunately can’t find any boy names that I love. My husband on the other hand is absolutely in love with the name [name_m]Theon[/name_m] and has been calling the baby that name ever since we found out we were having a boy. In fact he’s been referring to the baby as “[name_m]Theon[/name_m]” for so long it almost feels like that IS his name. I think the name is okay but I just don’t “love” it (I’m not in love with any other names either so I’m not sure if that makes a difference). The two things that I do like about the name are the meaning (Godly) and the fact that it’s pretty unique.

Anyways, I just wanted some honest opinions on what other people think of the name. What does the name [name_m]Theon[/name_m] make you think of? I’m a little worried about the association with Game of Thrones, however “[name_m]Theon[/name_m] of [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f]” was the name of a famous mathematician and that was long before GOT! For the record, I’ve never watched Game of Thrones or read the books. My husband has read the books and he isn’t bothered by the association. Thanks in advance for your help and honest opinions.

It’s a great name, but the GOT association is too much for me, as the character really gets the raw end of the deal. What about [name_u]Theo[/name_u] as a nn for [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]?

You may not have the GoT association personally but it is a lot stronger of an association to most people than [name_m]Theon[/name_m] of [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f]. If it doesn’t bother you or your husband then why not use it?

You could also try [name_m]Theron[/name_m].

I love [name_m]Theon[/name_m]! I would not worry too much about the association with GoT. Not everybody will associate it with GoT because not everybody watches the show or has read the books, besides, who knows, in 10 or 20 years no one will probably remember GoT anyway

I love [name_m]Theon[/name_m]. I don’t mind the Game of Thrones association, or the fact that the character is a douchebag! I’m a big GoT fan, so it’s a positive association for me regardless. It is a very handsome name with or without this association. Other fun T names: [name_m]Theron[/name_m], [name_m]Torin[/name_m]/[name_m]Torrin[/name_m], [name_m]Tobin[/name_m], [name_u]Theo[/name_u], [name_u]Tristan[/name_u], [name_m]Tobias[/name_m].

Ahhh my SO likes this name. I love [name_u]Theo[/name_u], but not [name_m]Theon[/name_m]. I just don’t know. I think [name_m]Theon[/name_m] and I automatically think [name_m]Theon[/name_m] Greyjoy, but I guess that’s because I’ve watched GoT. It could definitely work for a little boy, in fact it is pretty adorable yet strong, but I just don’t know about it for me! I do adore [name_u]Theo[/name_u] as nn though.

is kind of a neat name.

I don’t watch or read Game of Thrones, but my husband does and it is horribly violent. I don’t know that that is a reason to not name your child [name_m]Theon[/name_m] though.

You might ponder other TH names like [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_m]Thayer[/name_m], Therimen, and uh… I am running out of TH names, but I know there must be more out there.

Good luck!

It reminds me of the girl name [name_f]Ffion[/name_f].
Other ideas:
[name_u]Auberon[/name_u]/[name_u]Oberon[/name_u]
[name_m]Espen[/name_m]
[name_u]Hero[/name_u]
[name_m]Thane[/name_m]

Right now the name [name_m]Theon[/name_m] makes me think about torture (because of the GoT association) Of course GoT won’t always be in the forefront of peoples’ minds, though. There are several T names I like for boys:

[name_m]Truman[/name_m]
[name_m]Thane[/name_m]
[name_m]Thaddeus[/name_m] ([name_m]Thad[/name_m])
[name_u]Tate[/name_u]
[name_m]Trent[/name_m]
Thrace

While I wouldn’t ordinarily suggest not using a name just because of an unfortunate fictional association, [name_m]Theon[/name_m] is an exception to me for several reasons. If Game of Thrones were just a TV show, the association with [name_m]Theon[/name_m] Greyjoy would likely fade from memory in a few years once the series ends. However, the book series is likely to become a well read classic for many future generations, not only maintaining the association but possibly increasing it in years to come. Second, the name is so uncommon that it makes the association with the GoT character stronger. It’s like the difference between naming a kid [name_m]Tom[/name_m] and naming one [name_m]Huckleberry[/name_m]. People don’t hear the name [name_m]Tom[/name_m] and immediately think of [name_m]Tom[/name_m] [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u] because there are a hundred other associations for [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], but [name_m]Huckleberry[/name_m] is likely to immediately evoke thoughts of [name_m]Huckleberry[/name_m] [name_u]Finn[/name_u]. And while some litererary namesakes can be a positive association and even an additional reason for choosing the name, [name_m]Theon[/name_m] Greyjoy is not one of those. The character commits cruel acts of his own and then is captured and becomes the victim of many horrible tortures. If you absolutely loved the name, it still might be worth going with but since you don’t maybe a compromise could be reached on using [name_m]Theon[/name_m] as the middle name and selecting a first name that you both can love.

GoT is the first thing I thought of when I saw [name_m]Theon[/name_m]. I see this connection only getting stronger in the next couple of years because the character is still on the show and GoT is only getting more popular (the book series isnt even finished yet… If you dont mind the character association then go for it. [name_m]Theon[/name_m] (if I can separate it from GoT) is a nice name and is a handsome name.

Hmm Kazzjazz made some good points. Maybe the GoT association will become a lasting one.

[name_m]Theon[/name_m] reminds me of Creon (ruler of Thebes) from [name_m]Oedipus[/name_m] [name_u]Rex[/name_u]. Not necessarily a bad thing in that particular play, but supposedly he was kind of a bad guy in some other well-known literary works ([name_m]Chaucer[/name_m]'s The [name_m]Knight[/name_m]'s Tale, [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m]‘s The Two [name_m]Noble[/name_m] Kinsmen, and Sophocles’ [name_f]Antigone[/name_f]).

I am too cheap to have access to Game of Thrones, so I don’t know whether I would make that association.

I like [name_m]Theon[/name_m]. Though I must admit that when I meet one (in his 60s?) the other day I did first think if GoT. That said, he did have a color last name. Which didn’t help the matter. Still I think it’s very wearable and if you like the name and your hubby loves it I would consider it.

You could also look for longer versions that can be shortened to [name_m]Theon[/name_m] as a nn.
Unfortunately I can only think of [name_m]Thelonius[/name_m] as a literal option. Otherwise a [name_u]Theo[/name_u] fn with a N mn.
for example: [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_u]Noel[/name_u] or [name_m]Theseus[/name_m] [name_m]Ontario[/name_m].
